No, actually, we were isolationist under the order of the first president.
Goddamn you kids need to pay fucking attention in History class. Wikipedia is NOT a legitimate source for this information, especially when you don't read the fucking articles.
I care about facts
Your grasp on history is bafflingly bad. America was an isolationist state, as per our doctrine, until World War 2. We didn't participate in goddamn near anything outside our borders until Pearl Harbor.
Expansionism and the spanish american war is all a lie, right?
Bitch I am a lawyer. I know what the goddamn Monroe Doctrine is. You don't seem to know what the hell it is yourself.
The Monroe Doctrine was established as a diplomatic bridge between fledgling and established nations. It was an agreement that, provided Europe would stay out of the affairs of the Americas, the United States would do the same. It was the first step in ensuring PEACE between two states that had just recently fought a war. Additionally, the Monroe Doctrine was a method of extending the olive branch to Mexico and the other nations in Central America that, too, were fighting revolutions with their respective counterparts overseas.
If you had actually read what the Monroe Doctrine fucking was you would realize that Latin America was ON OUR SIDE when it was established, and it allowed all of our young nations to rely on one another for defense against potential future incursion by imperialist states.
Furthermore what you linked was NOT the Monroe Doctrine, but the Roosevelt Corollary, which WASN'T established in 1894 but 1904. The Roosevelt Corollary was only an amendment to the Monroe Doctrine because it flew right in the fact of the doctrine's original purpose, which was to live and let live.
The Spanish American War took place DECADES after the Monroe Doctrine was established and during a period of which Roosevelt began to twist its purpose for lack of more legitimate reasons.
And no, when I referenced "Our Doctrine," it was not the Monroe Doctrine. I was referencing the ground rules that President Washington established during his term, chiefly of which was that America came first and foremost and that we should not get involved in foreign affairs that we otherwise have the option of avoiding.

what the fuck does the Monroe doctrine have to do with American imperialism?
Expansionism and the spanish american war is all a lie, right?
A 3 month war that resulted in the establishment of four independent nations =/= empire building.
In case you didn't realize, Spain was the empire in this equation. The Spanish American war was a war for independence, you illiterate git.
what the fuck does the Monroe doctrine have to do with American imperialism?
Absolutely nothing. Great reading skills bro.
I wasn't talking about empire building.
also, nice skipping over the Expansionism.
Well you see thats what makes America great, states joined the Union by CHOICE not by FORCE. It is the duty of every state to leave when the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are shit on and looked upon as 200 year old pieces of useless paper, the very fact we have the Federal Reserve is enough to warrant secession from the Union.
I'd rather be an asshole dictator than a lame duck who can't keep his country in one peace.
I'd rather be an asshole dictator than a lame duck who can't keep his country in one peace.
Nobody cares if you'd want to be a dictator. What matters is if you'd want to live UNDER a dictator.
i'd love to be a dictator.
I'd be all awesome
i'd make everyone make me a golf course i'd never use
[editline]09:57PM[/editline]
and make everyone build themselves golf courses, which I will use

Which ever would ensure a more comfy standard of living.
Which ever would ensure a more comfy standard of living.
That is the most incredibly lazy thing I have ever heard. The duty of government is not to give you a comfortable life, it is to ensure you can establish a life of your own that fits your own desires.
What you can comfort I call somnambulance. In a free system we are both permitted to live in such a way that we both enjoy as individuals. In a dictatorship your comfort comes at the cost of my suffering. You can live however comfortably that you want, but it's your responsibility to ensure that you do, not the responsibility of everyone.
Maybe they can join up with Texas and form Temontas

I think we can all agree.
I find it rather disturbing that the United States is so much like an empire, yet nearly three-fifths of it's populace is in denial about this.
Actually, more appropriately, we're more like the late 2nd Century BC Roman Republic than anything else.
Silly Vermont rebellion is for Texas.
The US declared independence from the British Empire.
Pretty hypocritical that other states aren't allowed to leave.
The United States doesn't make anything anymore. You'd have to become self sufficient to secede from the United States and even hope to hold them off, unless you think the entire world will come to your aid.

Weapons systems, medical advancements, the world's largest entertainment industry, logistics systems to name a few of the things that we make and export.

Do you think one state can build an economy based off of those things in the short time they'd have before US troops came in?

They don't need to. Each state has an independent infrastructure, as per design. If a state couldn't survive on its own it couldn't survive within the union.
Way to not understand the basic way in which our union works.

weapon systems is still far behind modern computing standards. your cell phone is more advanced than any "smart" missile.

Uhh no.
I don't know who told you this but that is downright wrong.
Maybe you should do a little bit of research on defense contractors.

We make steel.

Gary, Indiana. I'm guessing we're putting those pollutants in the sky for a reason.
Also, all these stupid threads about "changing America" and reforming it in any way is ridiculous. You are seriously going to tell me that you want your lifestyle changed? You couldn't handle life without your computer, your nice house, and a car. You are complaining for the sake of complaining.

We grow plenty of food, cotton for clothing and other purposes, animals for meat, steel as the previous poster stated, Hawaii grows some of our coffee, we make a number of automobiles... I could go on but meh.
True, all of this is done in different states. One state alone could not hope to get everything it needs on it's own, it has to import products from other states. United States, though, produces many of the things it needs.

Wait, advanced weapons systems are a good thing?

Please read the thread.
Person A: America doesn't make anything
Person B: Weapons systems, etc. etc.
oh, yeah, that guy is an idiot.
I never get why if a state secedes, everyone assumes there's going to be a Instant war, Seriously, the Civil War didn't break out the instant South Carolina Seceded.
I'd love to see how this ends.
