It's not entirely surprising to be honest, it happens everywhere. The UK isn't much different. At this rate England, Wales and Scotland will be all separate countries.

Just because a state has a lot of these types doesn't mean they'll get anywhere. Every year in Texas we get a bunch of "independent" candidates and they don't get any where. It's easy to fan populist discontent, and it's no different here. And while we're in Vermont, it is home to the second independent in the senate, Bernie Sanders, the only socialist (or so he refers to himself as) in the US Congress.

Please don't call it an Empire.

To invade would be to recognize the succeeded state's sovereignty, or simply break four dozen laws and constitutional writs. Either way they incite more conflict than they quell, and the situation would quickly escalate and most likely end in hundreds of thousands of civilian casualties and a shattered and irreparable union. We have civilian riot police. Military involvement in an intrastate conflict is strictly forbidden in almost all circumstances.

If Vermont has a vote and more than half its population wants out I don't see why not. They can still be a part of NATO and trade with other states. It's doesn't have to be that big of a deal.
