Though I understand the spirit of the law is meant to oppressive, you can't really say it's unfair. If groups representing homosexuality exist, groups representing heterosexuality existing shouldn't bother anyone. Where the difference comes in is, will they use the opportunity to attack gays, or will they simply offer another angle to look at things? One group at my college took some of my class time to come in and tell everyone "It's ok to be gay". Cool message, but they left a part out. So when question time came up, I said "Alright, we can all hopefully agree that being gay is ok, am I right?" "Of course." "So is being straight ok too?" "What?" "Is it ok to be straight?" I wonder why they couldn't give me a straight answer? :smug: Seriously though, I was asking just to be a dick and get a 5 second laugh, but it turns out they had turned down straight people who wanted to join and my statement created a huge controversy. The college shut them down when the semester ended.
how about you kill yourself what was that thing that TH89 wrote about privilege. oh yeah here it is:
To ask "why can't we have white/straight pride" is to miss the point of what "pride" means in these circumstances If you're a black or brown or gay or whatever dude in America, you are subjected to a constant barrage of media images that essentially tell you you're something other than a normal person. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/DnR3b.jpg[/img_thumb] (this is fake but it makes the point) If you're the wrong color you can't use beauty products. If you're the wrong religion you have to pledge allegiance to America and God anyway. If you're black you're told that the lighter your skin is the better-looking you are. If you're asian or gay you have few role models in the media except for shallow stereotypes. Now, if you are a white straight guy it is very easy to say "well that's not a big deal, just don't worry about it" and dismiss problems that you, personally, have never had to deal with. This is called privilege and very smart people have written books and books on it. It's easy to dismiss the importance of not spending waking moment of your life being reminded that you are Different. It's alienating to be told that a part of your identity makes you an Other, someone who doesn't belong (even if society portends to be liberal and makes a big deal out of how they accept you anyway, as if it deserves gratitude). That's why minority groups have "pride" movements. It's a way of coping with the onslaught of people like the True Finns telling them they're not the right type of people and that they don't belong. That's why majority groups who yammer about their pride always turn out to be massive bigots. To act like it's the same thing is to draw a false equivalence between totally different social groups.

The main problem with that argumentation is that by having those pride moments they segregate themselves even more from the "average" if you will. For a lack of better word. I wouldn't use normal in this regard. While the media does tend to target the most finally able group and in that way partially isolate itself from other ethnicities, those ethnicities are actually deepening the lines even more themselves by seemingly pushing forward their divergence with those various pride movements. By having those, they themselves stop seeing themselves as the average group but as something else, someone who is different from the norm and thus must be recognised.
This is a common point of view among majority groups. The gist is what you're saying is "those minorities need to stop reminding me that they are discriminated against. If they would just pretend everything is fine and not make me feel guilty, the problem would go away." Except it wouldn't go away for them, just for you. This is a great example of how majority groups are so accustomed to being catered to that they can't grasp the idea that someone else might not be.

guys come on you believe in practically the same thing
I'm sure we do, and I respect his opinions regardless, but it pisses me off when people are surprised that I can't interpret vague sarcasm.
guys come on you believe in practically the same thing
He thinks homosexuals shouldn't be discriminated against for very slightly different reasons than I do, we must argue until death
Hey guys I chose to hate the taste of licorice. Back when my great grandma was still alive and she offered me licorice I was just being a total asshole and choosing that I hated it instead of choosing that I loved it. Brb I'm gonna go choose to be gay now. To the people rating me dumb what part of being gay is a choice?
It is wrong because humans are unable to reproduce homosexually
Why is that wrong? Because you think we're going to run out of babies, or it's immoral to not have kids or something?
That's weird, the LBGT Alliance at my college accepts anyone willing to stand up for people's civil rights. It seems hypocritical and idiotic in all honesty to block members because of their sexuality. That's the whole point of creating these groups is to promote equal treatment. If the group itself doesn't practice what it preaches, it should be removed.
And thankfully, they were removed. A new group opened up a few years later and though less active, they have also maintained a much better reputation. That said, gays in my school really don't get any hate as people tend to quickly come to their defence.
I really don't understand how there is hate inside the LGBT-community itself between each other seeing as we already get enough hate. You being gay should know about hate and understand that people are people and they are how they are. Let them be them and do you. So what if they are "girlier" and don't meet up with the manly standard, and so what if they have high pitched voices, and if they like fashion, and don't dress as manly as you. You shouldn't hate. Simple enough.
I knew some gay people who hated bi-sexuals and felt they were just whores. I found their lack of understanding frustrating... Why oppressed peoples would fight each other is beyond me (though here in Canada, I would use "oppressed" loosely).
Compulsory KKK memberships, intermarrying, all-white facilities, opposition to interracial marriages, treatment of women as property, and, of course, homophobia.
Come now, no need to be so closed minded. Many of those fighting for a traditional definition of marriage think that marriage should imply family building. They're often not against gay relationships (though some obviously are). It's just a fight over a definition really... kinda silly but it is what it is.
how about you kill yourself what was that thing that TH89 wrote about privilege. oh yeah here it is:
TH89 is a racist fuck. He argues for blacks on the one hand and then doesn't ban people insulting jews on the other. I've had many arguments with him about this, and he fails to see that things like a black college fund are racist, whether or not they're well intentioned. A college fund for the poor would be acceptable, and if that so happens to pay out to more black people (say if, for example, more black people were poor than white people), than so be it. The money went to who needed it... not just to who was black.
It'll be just a better idea to stop promoting being tolerant and shit when there are people who will not change, and instead more harshly and severely punish those who do hate crimes (Beating up blacks, hanging homosexuals, lynching lesbians, etc) People who do that should be harshly punished so they realise that over several generations the government takes it seriously.
Stop promoting tolerance? :frog:

He's got a point, racist douchebags must be re-educated by force. There is no way around it.
Your idea makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, from any possible perspective.
What he's probably trying to say is, stop focusing on preventing it and start puninshing homophobes who commit hate crimes.
On "family values", Not only does it alienate people who are of non-straight sexual orientation, but it also provides this cut-and-dry model of "how it's supposed to be". In reality, if we were to all follow these "values", we would be a race of practical zombies. No culture, no individuality. We might as well all be wearing smiling-white-man-with-blonde-hair masks. It follows under the assumption that everyone is the same. That there is no war, poverty, or hunger. That we all live on one perfect free country. That there aren't thousands of children dying every day because they don't have food, water, or shelter. That there aren't thousands of soldiers being sent off to a war they never wanted or expected to die, and then have their funerals protested by radical Christians. And it angers me, that we must make a population of everyone-being-the-same just to not hate one another every waking moment.
He's got a point, racist douchebags must be re-educated by force. There is no way around it.
Except they would most likely dismiss it as "stupid liberal anti-american propaganda bullshit"
Nobody can speak for everyone, stop making assumptions. Welcome eachother with open arms. Keep it in your pants, honestly if everyone kept their sexuality in their bedroom none of this shit would ever happen. Ever.
It's impossible to do so because people need to be forced rather than told not to hate minorities.
yo hay the type of government that you're suggesting is the exact same type of government that legally oppresses minorities. you really can't have authoritarianism without the oppression of various racial/ethnic groups because authoritarian governments pretty much necessarily endorse a certain culture over others and that always gets unavoidably tangled with issues of race [editline]26th April 2011[/editline]
What he's probably trying to say is, stop focusing on preventing it and start puninshing homophobes who commit hate crimes.
uhh but we do? that's why it's called a "hate crime" but here's the thing, merely punishing people when they break the law isn't enough to stop them from breaking the law (it hasn't worked on the war on drugs), you need to bring about societal change that prevents the crimes from happening in the first place. this whole 'people will always hate each other' bullshit is 100 percent unfounded. hate isn't natural, it's the result of socioeconomic issues which can be affected and alleviated.
He's got a point, racist douchebags must be re-educated by force.
sorry but telling people how to think just doesn't fit into american ideals, especially if they aren't isolating or victimizing people. dumbasses cannot be touched the government allows opinions and views, even if they are retarded
Fucking this. The very ideals that most western nations were founded upon demand that people have the right to hold fucking stupid beliefs. I mean, if it wasn't for that very freedom, you wouldn't have pastafarianism as a method to protest organized religion. The freedom to say "I'm gay" also allows you to say "Being gay is wrong"; you can hate the idea, but you can't discriminate against the individual (meaning you can't fire someone for being gay, but you can disagree with the idea of gays). I guess another way to put this is, freedom has its pros and cons... if you forced everyone to accept gays, wouldn't you be just as bad as the anti-gay groups trying to force everyone to hate them? Logical discourse is the very essence of democracy, and though these discussions haven't been very logical (especially because there is very little science to support either side of the debate), they are at least happening.
