Eco-Terrorists? I can't really find much terrifying about them.
I can't see how large of a threat this is.
Don't really understand why people are so "I hope the whaling ships cut off their penises, destroy their ships, and ruin their lives" about Whale Wars.
Yeah they're hippies and really just obnoxious but the whole fishing industry in Japan is pretty harmful to the marine life, mainly whaling and blue fin tuna. There's a possibility tuna could go extinct fairly suddenly in the near future. So they do have a legitimate reason to be out there, and they're doing a lot more than people buying "Save the whales!" t-shirts.
I can't help but to laugh at the Gojira ship.
Isn't Gojira an overused monster used in Japanese monster movies?
As a Godzilla fan myself... I'd say I take offense to that, but most Godzilla fans such as myself are far too jaded from years of being teased for being Godzilla fans to take offense to any remark against the big guy.
I'm still waiting for Toho to sue the crap out of Sea Shepherds for using that name on their ship. :v:

I remember seeing an episode a long time ago where the Whalers actually radioed in to the Steve Irwin and called them terrorists. One of the guys on the bridge made the comment: "Yeah, because we all know terrorists drink their coffee out of "World's #1 Dad!" mugs." (he happened to be doing such at that time)

A percentage of the Japanese population take any negative remark on their out dated fishing techniques as an attack to their culture.
I think they're fighting a good cause, but their methods don't really make them any better than the whalers they're trying to fight.
Ever sense they got three ships operating, their main course of action is basically escort the factory ship around and physically block the slipway. They don't even throw buteric acid anymore. Last year the Whalers didn't get a single whale on board while the Sea Shepherds were behind them.
In that case, nevermind what I said.

But it's the Japanese culture to rape and pillage the ocean of it's resources! We should let them! :downs:

They still got a water cannon(but thats up against the whalers like... 12 cannons) and the little boats. We'll have to see if Watson sticks to his word (hahaha) about not using buteric acid anymore, but that's what he said at the end of last years campaign.
While the Japanese diet does mainly consist of fish and other seafood and rice (because rice tends to make a good side for its versatility and the fact it's grains, perhaps) they still don't seem to be interested in doing anything for the ecology of the life in the oceans around them. Why not, especially considering the fact that they probably eat it (whatever is edible, anyways) confuses me.
I'd stand with the Sea Shepherds if they didn't try to act like they're some oceanic riot force. I wonder what the Earthrace Conservation organization does about it all though, interesting story there OvB.
Can you really say that any culture isn't doing the same thing to their environment? I don't want to get all eco-hippy here, but it's really true. The Japanese may take no interest in what happens to their seafood industry, but just look at what goes on in the states or anywhere else with other parts of what makes them a country.
I find it amazing that Native Americans managed to live on this land for who knows how long, and we Americans have been here for a little over than 200 years and already fucked up a lot of stuff.
Sea Shepherds can go die. If people want to hunt whales, they should be able to.
Im also jealous of the Sea Shepherds beautiful fleet of ships.

It's more than hunting. The Japanese claim the large-scale whaling efforts they're doing is for scientific research, yet it's blatantly obvious they're not after research considering there are numerous non-lethal ways to gather the very information they are getting from these lethal means of acquisition.
It isn't that I'm afraid they're going to kill off numerous species of whale, they've been doing this for thousands of years and it's always been on whales not considered endangered (save a few slips.) The whaling industry is a large chunk of the backbone of Japan's economy. They're going to keep it that way for quite some time, and I feel that they won't let it die from lack of control, either.
The issue lies with ethics. This reminds me of that news report in Mass Effect 2 about batarian slavers arguing that slaving is a large part of their economy and the galactic Council needs to make slaving legal. In the end it's all about differing cultures and prejudice. Eventually, I think we're going to spiral down into a huge heated argument over who has the better judgment, and not what is truthfully right and what is truthfully wrong.

That sounds like the South leading up to the Civil War.
They try to compare it to us killing cows, but we kill our cows instantly and painlessly. It can take up to 20-30 minutes to kill a minke whale using often two explosive rocket propelled harpoons and a rifle. For an intelligent animal (arguably the second most intelligent order of animal) which feels pain in it's full extent and can feel emotions similar to that if humans, this is downright inhumane and cruel. They often target the young first knowing that the mother will helplessly stay around to defend it. It's sick and disgusting. It's an outdated industry and there are no painless and humane ways to carry it out to date. It should be internationally banned like the IWC intended in 1986.

If we killed cows the way the Japanese kill whales and dolphins there would be lawsuits and outcry up the ass. The whole industry would be shut down, yet we let the Japanese do this because it's their "culture." It's bullshit.
Factory farming?
I guess I just don't really care about dead whales.
I wouldn't mind eating whale meat.

I wouldn't really care if it was quick and painless like the rest of the civilized world tries so hard to do with their farming industries. The Japanese somehow get an exception to this just because their food comes from the ocean. (and lets not get started on the rest of the worlds overfishing problems.(the ocean is horribly neglected))
Factory farming?
You ever tried building a tank that can hold one multi-ton animal? At best it's hard as hell.
Now try building one that can hold several.

Once again a trend started by the Japanese. They always end up dying though. I wonder why.
And this is coming from someone who wants to open an aquarium in the future. There are just some animals that should never be in captivity. Cetaceans and Whale sharks are among them.
Well, whales needs a lot of open space to travel around and about, pretty much like how cows/horses/bison would graze but on a scale multiplied by 5,000.

I meant our factory farming is their form of whaling. There are still some slaughterhouses that resort to unethical methods of killing animals, such as shocking chickens to put them into shock so they don't make any loud noise when they're being killed.

:| A single horse can be kept in a pasture that's one and a half acre in size.
I am ignorant of this subject so I shall say....Let em stop the whalers.

While the FDA/USDA does try to stop animal cruelty, there are some places that do get away with it sure, but nothing on the scale of shooting it with a rocket propelled grenade or two and shooting it with a high caliber rifle as saltwater pours into it's open wounds until it drowns on it's own blood. You can't kill a whale humanely.
