I'm obviously not saying this is any way indicative of anything, but it is a rather dark thought I had come up when I saw that:

I actually think for most people it is probably the fact that Japan is seen in society as kind of "strange" and "alternative" due to cultural perceptions, hopefully at least.

Also what confuses me the most is the 100,000+ searches for Boris Johnson.

Well, I think that there is a little more behind this than just people getting a hard-on from command line interfaces.

In this still from the Overwatch cinematic, note the robot between Tracer and Mercy.
It has the symbol of Athena on its forehead, so many people have been thinking that Athena might become a pickable hero at some point.

There are also props in the Anubis map with the same distinct silhouette, which has further fueled the speculation of the physical existence of Athena

Given that Athena is a female name and has a female voice in the game, I'm not suprised that people think of Athena as a female entity.
It would also be a great counterpart compared to the more bulky and angular look of the other robot hero Bastion (commence shipping ⛴)

That said this was all discovered more than 8 months ago, so whether this still holds truth is up for debate.
Only time can tell.

Welcome to user stat gathering, users can lie on their profiles. No one claims these stats are 100% accurate and fact checked. It's just stuff they pull from their database and visualize.

Now it could be skewed if lets say accounts are shared, or someone leaves a video running without actually watching it.

They can easily cross reference stats from trackers or other data, determining gender is pretty easy based on the browsing habbit.
