Africa really only broke away from the colonies in 1950-1980 though.
South america broke away from the spanish and portuguese much earlier.
north america did too, though the USA wasn't exploited that much, for fucks sake we had lower taxes than people in the british.

The african continent was ehhhh, okay. before europe stepped in.

Edit: still wasn't the most desirable place to live at however.
