while it's tradition here and has been for the last god knows how long, in recent years the poppy has become more and more of a political symbol coinciding with the rise of the hard right in the uk and their misuse of it. Nothing wrong with the poppy or honouring the soldiers of WWI but ultimately it IS a political symbol on a wider scale; wearing it at an international football game is like, there's a time and place and all that and no matter which way you spin it, war and politics go hand in hand, as do tryna seperate politics and international sporting events.
it probably doesn't help the majority of the uk papers are tryna push this story hard because any percieved attack on the national identity riles people up and makes it easier to push all kinds of legislation
There really isn't a discernible rise in far right anything in the UK though, only in the mediaworld.
I thought the poppy was a general symbol for remembering all the dead of WW1, that's what it's used as here.
Over the years the meaning has panned out to include more recent conflicts. In fact, the emphasis this year from the Royal British Legion has been on its relevance to the younger generation.
Update,
English and Scottish FA are gonna be doing what they did in 2011 and will wear armbands. Fifa said they will punish both sides, both sides said fuck you (in a manner of speaking).
Further update, in march of this year
The Republic of Ireland was allowed, by Fifa to wear a special kit commemerating the 1916 Easter Rising rebellion against British Rule, no matter what way you cut it that is a Political statement which was allowed because ???
