Missouri bans students from friending teachers on Facebook

In my school we had things like sexual harassment happen due to students and teachers sharing contact info.
i always thought this was the norm, at least even if there isn't a law
none of my teachers will accept me until i graduate

Ditto here.
I was also under the impression most student-teacher facebook friendships aren't as genuine as, say, student-student. Just because the teacher might not talk about as much of their personal life as, say, on another account.
I called the senators office(from california) and argued with them about this law.
They tried the old runaround story and told me to look up the law....as i was looking at it on my screen.
They ended with saying that teachers have full authority over you until you graduated. Even during my scenario i offered: 6pm on a saturday, teacher at home and student at home.
I don't see the problem. Nothing good really comes of teenagers having their teachers facebook. They didn't allow it in my school and I believe it was a good thing.

Read the bill.
It bans teachers and students from even sending a message to the other if it isn't school related.
I happen to be friends with quite a few of my teachers.
According to the new law, you can't send them a message and invite them to the big olive garden party you're planning.
No. I just don't see students as people to "mingle and socialize" with. I'm there to educate them, not to be there friends. I have people my age for that.
You mingle and socialize with nine year olds?
You're the kind of person we'd like to call, Western Civ Teacher.

Because it's obviously a bomb threat or something in correlation with Al-Qaeda. Possible weapons of mass destruction, you know? You can't tell what they're putting in the breadsticks.
MUST BE PLUTONIUM.
I have one of my teachers on Facebook (he's the coolest one as well), though the others have said they don't feel like adding students.
Fucking hate my state, feels like it's the only one without decent internet, i'm moving to where ever i can get fiber internet.
Fuck you Nixon. I'll befriend whomever I please.
My friend's mum is a teacher and she taught him. Oh shhiii
Don't a lot of schools already do this? My high school did.
As soon as I graduated, my programming teacher friend requested me.
She's the coolest teacher ever.
What happens if you marry someone who used to be your teacher? I'm sure its happened at some point

it's missouri so you would probably get the death penalty
If I want to have a little cybersex with my teachers I should be able to do that without the government getting involved :v:
This is sort of my old school's unspoken policy. One of our best teachers recently left because some sort of rumor got around about him texting a girl student or two a lot more than should probably be necessary. It was all completely innocent, but even just the rumor sort of reflects badly on the teacher and the school.
I didn't hear anything about a real policy while I was there, but most of the teachers I knew just sort of tried to stay away from friend'ing kids on facebook. Two Spanish teachers I was pretty close to just added us the day we graduated and still has a couple of us over for spanish food every once in a while.
I don't think this should be legally enforced though, it should be up to the school to make a policy regarding this.
My private school didn't allow friending to current or to my class specifically after we graduated because our class was one of the misbehaved ones. We were swept under the rug per Private foundation fashion.
It’s not clear how Missouri plans to enforce the law, but it’s quite possible social networks will be asked to do a little work themselves.
I hope the social networking sites give them a big "fuck off" if they do ask.
I'm great friends with my old teacher, still keep in touch with him! Hell, I even borrowed a political documentary off of him one time :v:
My school does this. You can't friend a current teacher until you're out of school. If they read your profile and you have anything horrible on it (drinking, smoking, anything against the law) they're obligated to tell the police since you're their student. There's too high of a risk now a days.
Wow, bit over the top there America.
Must be your state, because in quite a few American and Australian states, only sale is illegal, but not possession.
