Multiple IGN readers tipped us off to the move, which Sony has since confirmed, citing "market conditions" while promising "currently, price adjustments are not being planned for PS Plus in the SCEA [North American] region." When we asked Sony whether the UK or EU should expect any changes, we were told "Customers will be notified of any price adjustments for their subscription services but there is nothing to announce at this time."
I'm still disappointed you have to pay at all for online play on PS4
I'm still disappointed you have to pay at all for online play on PS4
Completely unfathomable concept to me.
At least there still some benefit on getting a playstation plus account... free games and awesome discounts as well.
WHAT?! RIOT
Completely unfathomable concept to me.
If Sony hosted the servers for it AND they would guarantee that the servers would be online until X years after the PS4 is discontinued, I could understand it.
At least there still some benefit on getting a playstation plus account... free games and awesome discounts as well.
Steam is free, you can sometimes get free games, and they have discounts quite often. I have never understood why people like PS Plus so much.
At least there still some benefit on getting a playstation plus account... free games and awesome discounts as well.
Its not free if you pay for them
Steam is free, you can sometimes get free games, and they have discounts quite often. I have never understood why people like PS Plus so much.
Its really nothing like that at all. Like, at all. PS Plus you could get games like Borderlands 2, Metro Last Light, Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, Hotline Miami, Crysis 3, Demon Souls, etc completely "free" by subscribing to it (plus big discounts on their general online store). Way WAY more than that obviously: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Instant_Game_Collection_games_(North_America) You also have to realize that paying to play online is an alien concept to PC gamers because generally the server hosts pay for their servers versus all the players paying for the servers. I.E. want to play TF2? Guess what, you'll likely be joining someone elses server that is paying way more per month than you would on a console membership, but lets people join. Meanwhile, Sony generally hosts all their online traffic for all games running on their platform. It ensure it all runs with a generally acceptable degree of quality/service. That said, not every PC game uses player-ran servers (Dota, big obvious example), so not saying sony gets a free pass for charging for online. But its also a bit different. Steam has a monopoly and doesn't need to charge for using "steam servers" because it infinite money from their storefront alone, basically paying for any online membership you (or another player/clan hosting a server, or another developer) would otherwise pay. And because Steam is just a program/service that exists on an open platform, they don't have to worry about console production costs, distribution, retail storefronts, etc. Someone always foots the bill for the server. For consoles, it just happens to traditionally be the actual players for those who want to use their console online. Its also used as a means to recoup losses while selling consoles, since most consoles lose money (and thus rely on subscriptions to their service and you buying games to recoup losses). Steam doesn't need to charge for online because PC gamers pay for their entire "console" upfront, they don't control the PC ecosystem (they just are apart of it), and traditionally other players interested in owning a server would foot the bill for server costs instead of every player. Not to mention Steam already makes all of its money from digital distribution, an area that consoles are sorely lacking on.
Pretty much what KorJax said. People who complain about this usually fall into the same category of knowing jackshit about server costs
Pretty much what KorJax said. People who complain about this usually fall into the same category of knowing jackshit about server costs
every steam game i've ever played that includes multiplayer i've never had to pay to access it's online features not to mention most online on console is done peer to peer anyway, which means there is no reason to clump it into ps+ because it literally costs zero to run and will continue to run forever. i think like two games out of the 80 or so on next gen use actual servers.
Pretty much what KorJax said. What about those server costs?
Its obvious they saw how much money Microsoft was making with XBL Gold and decided to switch. I always had it because of all the games you get with PS+ so it never really bothered me that much.
Wasn't one of the PS3's main trump card in most arguments over which console was better the fact that it had free online? (Correct me if I'm wrong which I most probably am)
If I'm already paying for my internet connection, then why should I pay more just to be able to use that internet connection? Sure 5$ is not the world but it's still 5$ that I could use differently.
South Africa, Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and India
so basically PS+ goes up in any place thats got social unrest social instability or indian food
every steam game i've ever played that includes multiplayer i've never had to pay to access it's online features not to mention most online on console is done peer to peer anyway, which means there is no reason to clump it into ps+ because it literally costs zero to run and will continue to run forever. i think like two games out of the 80 or so on next gen use actual servers.
Wow! It's almost like those games have dedicated servers! Crazy! (Also, 4 free games every month that don't suck)
Wasn't one of the PS3's main trump card in most arguments over which console was better the fact that it had free online? (Correct me if I'm wrong which I most probably am)
It was, but at the same time one of the biggest criticisms of the PS3 is that it has shit network functionality.
It's almost as if Sony lost a lot of money and needs to make it back!
I'm still disappointed you have to pay at all for online play on PS4
i was disappointed too when they first announced that, but its really only logical when shits not all that cheap to host servers in the first place, and they already did free online for PS3 + theyre still hosting PS3 servers at the same time as PS4 too free online on PS3 was just something sony needed to trump 360, and its not really needed anymore with how unpopular XB1 is already [editline]3rd October 2014[/editline] also you get free video games still so its entirely worth the money
Why I will never play online on consoles because I've already paid for my internet once and I wont pay for it again.
I would gladly pay 100 a year for the random games alone. I don't even have time to play them all. I don't play online at all other than gmod. Greatest deal ever. Nothing greedy about giving members 800 bucks of diverse games for 50 not to mention the other nice benefits like betas and such.
I would gladly pay 100 a year for the random games alone. I don't even have time to play them all. Greatest deal on the planet. Nothing greedy about giving members 800 bucks of diverse games for 50 not to mention the other neat shit.
But what if I don't give a shit about the games and just want to play online? You can trumpet the games deal all you want but most people would only get it because you're holding the online hostage.
But what if I don't give a shit about the games and just want to play online? You can trumpet the games deal all you want but most people would only get it because you're holding the online hostage.
I can't answer that, I can't imagine any reason why anybody wouldn't care about the games. Beyond my comprehension. There is so much variety that surely you like at least enough of the games that you effectively cancel out the cost or even profit. Personally I have enjoyed many of the games and discovered lovely games that I either hadn't heard of or wrongly thought looked lame. Sony effectively pays me in the form of games to play games and that's good enough for me.
i dont get the ps plus is good for free games thing because once you un-sub you cant play them anymore. they arn't really "Free" xbox games for gold and steam lets you keep them though.
so it is not even $1 = 1€, but 1$ > 1€ Fuck you
i dont get the ps plus is good for free games thing because once you un-sub you cant play them anymore. they arn't really "Free" xbox games for gold lets you keep them though.
There is no reason to unsub after a year, you keep getting games each month, it doesn't stop or anything.
There is no reason to unsub after a year, you keep getting games each month, it doesn't stop or anything.
if you have money issues or something there is a reason there.
though a majority of the games are either indie games that have already seen a pc release or decently old exclusives/multiplats which brings it up again why should i give a damn about the "free" games if i've already played a majority of them and just want to play my current games online
If a game is given on PS plus, and you own it on disk, you could sell your copy. The proper thing is to try all the games even if they look shitty because you can only know by playing them whether or not they might become your new favorite.
It was, but at the same time one of the biggest criticisms of the PS3 is that it has shit network functionality.
The PS4 is behind the times there too, the PS4 is still limited to IPv4 (our Sony blu-ray player has a more fleshed out networking stack)
