It takes a while to download HD photos/videos all the way from mars. The rover is equipped with HD cameras, but those photos wont be received until a few more hours/days. The first picture received was 64x64 pixels. Because it is so small, it could be sent and seen quickly.
Also, the lens is initially covered with a dust lens so that martian dust doesn't cover up the lens on landing. The dust lens will be removed soon enough.

And nobody is saying that. We're just saying "This is an amazing accomplishment for ALL of us...but let's let America have its moment in the sun." America gets ragged on all the time; it's nice to have something that we, as a country, can be truly proud of.

Someone told me the reason the images are slightly blurry is because they still have the protective lens cap on it.
One asks, with the 14 minute delay, how does one simply control the rover with that amount of input lag?
