This is actually incorrect, the primary reasons people have like 6-7 kids in Africa is due to culture, lack of social security and the advantages of extra labor. An 8-9 year old child may not be able to work the fields, but they can keep an eye on the goats, and when those children are older? Not only are they tending the fields, but when they're off and married they'll be able to support the parents when they can't support themselves, something we don't really have a problem with in the West due to socialized medicine/welfare/social security. Children cost a shitload of money in the West due to things like upper education, medicine and items which make child-rearing easier. Culture also plays a part in it, as a man who can sire five children and support them is seen as a "real man", while a woman fertile enough to bear five births is a "proper woman." After all, how can someone really call themselves a man or woman if they can't do the thing they're built for?
What about all the poor communities in western countries? Surely they aren't popping kids to work the fields or look over goats?
What about all the poor communities in western countries? Surely they aren't popping kids to work the fields or look over goats?
That falls into culture and social security. Having children is actually pretty damn cheap when you don't expect them to go to college, a fancy school, or demand all sorts of gizmos and gadgets, and when you're old and getting an itsy bitsy SS check your gaggle of children and grandchildren will make sure you're not living in a cardboard box. As for culture, when you don't have anything to pride yourself on, the most basic thing to take pride in is your ability to father or bear children, fertility and virility has always been a major facet of human society and for some people it's the ultimate sign that you're "doing something" with yourself. Hell, check out hypermasculinity, it's a trend in some Western societies and is particularly rife in (you guessed it) poor communities.
I'm one of these people. While currently I do not have pets, I'm getting a dog or two over a child any time. Human babies are a huge investment with arguable returns.
What's the point then ? When you get older, you (and your wife/husband) alone with a bunch of dogs and a few senile friends ? Then you die and leave nothing behind. All that is you, all the future potential of your possible successors gone forever. That fate terrifies me, and I can't understand how someone can willingly chose it (unless you are someone who makes a difference in the world).

I mean if that's the reason you want kids go for it, you do what you gotta do with baby making. I don't like kids, see the advantages of not having kids of my own, and that seems like a win-win for me. I'd want maybe one or two dogs because I've grown up with them and they're fun to have.

I can hardly even take care of myself.
