Time to start feeling old: It's 10 year anniversary of steam version of Garry's Mod

garrysmod started my videogame addiction
How time flies. I was 18 back when it moved over to Steam.
I have never played GMOD but I will always appreciate for the videos it spawned:
We play JB mod here, outlander.
That's the way it's always been and that's the way it'll always be.
Take your high-falutin' city-boy mod somewhere else, we're not buying.
Boo this man!
I think that I never truly experienced Gmod. It practically was just HL2 playground for me, spawning too much shit on a singleplayer map, and trying to deal with it.
I remember playing Gmod 9 and then the steam notification popped up that you could buy an upgrade to it and I was like hell yeah
who would celebrate the 10-year anniversary of a JBMod ripoff?
I got garrys mod 9 back in 05/06 because the mod page on steam had a shot of Gman pointing a pistol at the camera, lit by a red light.
I thought it was a sick plot-based campaign mod
But I still spents hundreds of hours constructing, posing, and rp'ing on the hometown1998 map
I got Gmod about a year ago and loved it. It makes me sad I couldn't play it in its prime, especially from seeing so many videos like Idiot Box. It made me want to play it so much, but I feel like I missed out
all this time and I still don't know what exactly a mingebag is
Before your ingame name was determined by your steam friends name, Gmod had a box for that. Garry, being garry, decided the best default would be Minge Bag. It became attached to bad players and noobs because they would fail to change it, indeed many admin mods would autokick with specialized messages when such a player joined a server.
The bad players also attached the term to trolls and griefers.
what a time to be alive, gentlemen. This journey has been incredible

I was 19 when I started playing Gmod in 2007. I'm 29 now, shit I miss those days.
Man, Garry's Mod has been a significant part of my life. I played mostly for TTT and did a lot of mapping. My biggest map I started in high school, released in college, and finished the final update after I graduated from college. Might as well show it off:

I don't play Gmod much anymore and not sure if I'll get into mapping again but this is definitely something I'm proud of, especially after PewDiePie and Funhaus played it. Didn't expect it to get that popular at all.
Kind of waiting for the successor to Garry's Mod if I'm gonna get into mapping again. I don't want to put all sorts of work into a new map only to have Garry's Mod become obsolete.

i poured so much time into it, what an incredible thing
its ok
The early days of LUA in Garry's Mod are some of my fondest moments. Melon Racing and Barrel Mania(Which was just prop hunt, but with explosive barrels. One wrong guess and the whole map lights up).
Haven't played in a while because it seems like servers have consolidated into one or two gamemodes, but I'm excited for whatever successor comes next.
GMod is the reason I upgraded my computer and got into PC gaming.
Trying to make mad shit in GMOD 9.0.4 was the best back in the day.
It's a real shame that most of the smaller servers, gamemodes and communities got killed off by the wave of new players following the game's transformation into a massive youtuber cash cow.
The newer players just don't seem to be all that interested in building or creating content for the game and just want to do whatever the youtubers do. Even the communities that used to be huge like Wiremod couldn't appeal to them.
I'm gonna miss Spacebuild for sure. It might've been a buggy mess but spaceship building was fucking incredible.
Ah I remember getting into Gmod when I found some Half-Life and Gmod machinimas back then, including war of the servers (which I thought it was a game lol) I spent time first learning how to do things in sandbox basic stuff, made some tiny little houses, and then I saw so many Gmod machinimas I basically got so inspired to do my own stuff, even made some with youtube accounts long lost, they never were particularly good. I'm pretty proud to say I watched Gmod grow and evolve so much. The screenshots pip12345 posted look nothing like the Gmod you see now, it's like you're in a completely different game :v:
Good times, sadly my playtimes have gone down significantly, used to be the one game I played 24/7
its been so long, incredible
its been so long, incredible
It's only 10 years since it's been on Steam, a lot of us have been playing longer than that. Using it to make comics was my thing. My monitor was a 17" CRT at 1024x768!
They're still selling 13,000 copies a day? Holy fucking fuck.
Also I was unhappy about Gmod moving to the orange box engine as a kid, but then I came to accept and love it pretty quick.
Kitty0706 and Dasboschitt is the one who brought me to gmod.
Unfortunately,Kitty has passed away long time ago.
My only hope is Boschitt idiot box series
Also,i think im completely missed out the Gmod 9 party
I don't really see there being a successor to this because Half-Life 3 will obviously never happen.
Maybe Left 4 Dead 3 will have some decent modding capabilities? Although I'm starting to wonder if it's going suffer the same fate as HL3 considering how long it's been in development.
Valve seems to be mostly focusing on jerkin' it to VR tech demos right now.
More than 7,000 hours between two accounts, and I wouldn't trade those for any other game.
Thanks, Garry.
You made a good thing.

Most of the servers with the unique gamemodes were killed when Garry made new server browser. It practically made impossible to find server if it's not hosting sandbox/ttt/darkrp.

I think it is confirmed that they are on early stages of working on a successor and they are not limiting themselves to Source 2.
