This is a tad unrelated but sometimes I wish we still used cartridges for games and stuff.
Look at the old 90s cartridge style systems.
They last for-fucking-ever. Plus with the technology we have today we could have cartridges that store a LOT of data in a small-space, that's hard to break unless you toss it in a fire. Although, even then. Most consoles and even computers now seem to last 4 years at most without having to do some kind of maintenence/repair.
I've only upgraded my video card from my 4 year old PC and I can play Crysis on high at a reasonable framerate. If people are going to upgrade every year to have a monster rig and complain about the expenses, that's their own fault.
8800'ers represent
this card owns, an awesome purchase. I got it used for 100USD 4 years ago and it's lasted me the whole time; I'm only just now starting to have issues with it.
I like the transition to focus on gameplay and story, both of which are more important than the tech, but the thing is that graphics and technology are both very important to the advancement of games. The PC platform pushes everything forward, with higher demands for physics and graphics, which results in a better overall gaming experience.
And saying you don't want a new Crysis is flat out dumb. I want something that's so astoundingly beautiful that it shows the entire market what you can do with the platform, and pushes others to start doing the same.
Not if it bores me as fast as Crysis did.
I have a decent PC AND a 360, I can definitely see why a lot of people don't want a PC for gaming, the part names and figuring out the specs can throw off a lot of people.

if crysis bored you, you've got no imagination
the suit powers allowed you to do some incredible stuff, as did the enemy ai. if you didn't take advantage of them that's your fault

the bit with the aliens was stupid though, I only enjoyed fighting Koreans

fuck cartridges
blu-ray discs are super durable anyways
Articles like these are what makes RPS worth the read. Seriously, I had never analyzed the current PC gaming market in the way Alec described it, and I totally see it now. It's a pretty cool analysis.
Really? You needed an entire article to tell you that?
I could have told you it in 1 sentence because I figured it out casually years ago, you must be oblivious as hell not to notice.

Yeah, I recommended Crysis to on of my Steam buddies, and he finished it, I asked was it fun on Delta? he answered: Delta? I played it on easy. I was seriously astonished... How is that even fun :S Crysis is about a challenge and overcoming it, this is best done with playing on Delta.. taking it slow, being stealthy, or playing like rambo. Eitherway, Crysis is a great game.
Personally, while I'm happy for indie games, I could care less about consoles. I'm always glad to see great gameplay and great stories come out, but I really feel like the technical side of gaming should have done a lot more progression in the last year or two. If nothing else, then at least physics, at least AI. Where are my real-time volumetrics? Where's my real-time hair/fur? Image-based lighting, whatever.
I'm a special case because I do intensive 3D graphics, so it's always in my best interest to have a beefy PC. But I'd like to see my GTX 460 at least break a SWEAT. Crysis, no challenge. GMod is only limited by my E8400 at this point. I'd like to at LEAST see it break 60C.
there needs to be a balance between the indie devs and big time publishers
Indie games are great but generally are pretty casual. If we don't want pc gaming to deteriorate to a bunch of Minecrafts and MeatBoys (which are absolutely awesome in their own respects), the big publishers have to stay around and we need to support them when they make great pc games
i suppose this probably wont affect me. i have a graphics card that will ast me another few years
but i really had this problem years ago. PC world are so fucking over price
Woa this article made me really fucking sad
If I was a developer, I would make games for all platforms (not ports). I prefer PC since I used a laptop for many years since I was 8.

Well, not the way you put it. Yes I've noticed the indie scene since forever ago. I've been really keen on it, but the article talks about how the future of PC gaming has shifted due to the hardware war, something I hadn't really thought about until this article.

The Aliens part is where I stopped playing.
valve should make all games

You missed the point, the point is that the new games are either a port or not even made for pc.
There's a certain charm about PCs that will never diminish for me: The way you have so much control over them, the way you can customize them. I don't think I personally could ever fully move onto console gaming. It's just so... bland.
I agree totally.
I believe piracy has also had an affect over the PC game developers. When you release a game on PC it is inevitably going to be cracked and illegally downloaded. Why waste the time and money?
I plan for my 5850 to last a while.
The thing is, Console gaming is getting ever closer to PC gaming, what with them multi-tasking and all. Eventually I can see the two merging. Perhaps a "Windows Gaming" system that combines a powerful PC with a powerful console.
Which would be just a pc again
with sort of more media center operating system but still

Differents ways to counter piracy on PC games:
-Cheap price (40$/€ max. for example)
-Good support (Patches, Updates, FAQ, etc...)
-No bullshit 3rd-program DRM (Steam is fine, although a Non-Steam version is still a good alternative)
A lot of game developers seem to forget that easily. Too bad for them.
I bought a new PC 10 days ago. Believe me - that journey of looking for new parts was just pain in the asshole. Is that CPU going to bottleneck GPU or other way around? Is that HDD going to survive for more than half of a year? Is that mob really that good? Should I care about SLI? Why nvidia, maybe radeon this time?
Right now that shitty e-shop refuses to send all that stuff, telling me that there is no case, or gpu, or everything.
I think that instead of next-get gaming i'll just tell them to fuck off, force to give my money back and play on gts8600 and amd athlon +6400. I don't feel like doing all this shit again only to get a PC that will be decent for 3, max 4 months.
I put $1.5k into a gaming PC 5 years ago, plus another $150 into it over the years, and it has lasted me the entire time. Sure, it's showing its age, but there isn't a game on the market that it won't run at at least medium. (Which still looks and performs better than the console equivalent)
7900GS here. Still kicking with DDR1 RAM as well.
I'm cool with that.
The article is so true.
Still going strong with my 4830.
[sp]Although I'm probably going to pick up a 5770 at some point soon. :ninja:[/sp]
why is your avatar lankist lol
