I've got a couple indie games but idk, they just don't seem that appealing. World of Goo is fun for a few minutes, Penumbra is interesting, Lugaru is fun for a few minutes.
But I lose interest with them quickly
Except Braid. That game is so absurdly awesome.
I was rolling with a 2600Hd happily last year, since 2006.
Pah
Yah i've upgraded now, time to go on for another 4 years!
This is a tad unrelated but sometimes I wish we still used cartridges for games and stuff.
Look at the old 90s cartridge style systems.
They last for-fucking-ever. Plus with the technology we have today we could have cartridges that store a LOT of data in a small-space, that's hard to break unless you toss it in a fire. Although, even then. Most consoles and even computers now seem to last 4 years at most without having to do some kind of maintenence/repair.
The god damn N64 was bullet proof. You could throw it at oncoming traffic on a motorway and the car would be demolished.
I upgraded my pc to play TES:IV Oblivion, I've stuck with that computer because it could handle Crysis and I don't see any reason to upgrade my computer hardware further besides more hdd.
^This.
What was the major problem with cartridges anyways? Why did we change to discs?
What was the major problem with cartridges anyways? Why did we change to discs?
I think its because disks can hold more.
I still run shit on my 4850
I don't feel like doing all this shit again only to get a PC that will be decent for 3, max 4 months.
are you actually fucking serious
did you even read the article
Even at the height of the tech race it wasn't at all like this.
Metro 2033 is the only game that has truly pushed my hardware recently. Besides that, I'm fine with it even if it isn't that great. It runs Crysis fine and only recently have I had to play on more medium settings rather than high. The problem is, most of those games were just plain horribly unoptimized and really shouldn't have been as hard to run as they were.

Cartridges would be able to hold so much more now considering the amount of space flash drives / SD cards / memory sticks can hold, but they would also be absurdly expensive
The biggest console + is convenience.
You don't have to know squat to play on console, that's why so many kids play on it.
rocking an 8800GTS and don't need to upgrade. most graphically intensive game I play is new vegas anyway

if they were mass-produced on that scale then shit would get cheaper
What was the major problem with cartridges anyways? Why did we change to discs?
i dont have to blow a disk to get it to work

but wouldn't it be harder to hack and pirate too? (not impossible, just harder because the pirates need to find new hardware instead of software)
Pretty sure pirating existed with cartridges as well. I mean how else are you supposed to make ROMs? (No seriously, I have no idea how those things are made)
Discs are extremely cheap. They're already charging 60 bucks for new console games...you don't want to know how much they'd be if they still used cartridges.

Also, I should mention that I started seriously playing PC games around 2004; since then I've had a Dell Dimension from 2002, upgraded it with a 7800 GS, then I finally got a Sager laptop with a 260M last year.
Sure, I've never been able to run Crysis smoothly on very high, but I can play all the games I want to just fine. I don't understand why my friends upgrade so often.
I still have a 5 year old computer with 7600GT, and I don't play new games, graphics don't amuse me, gameplay for me what it's on and re-playability. I play all of Valve made games, and mostly indie stuff.
Haha this is different from what I usually see on gaming forums.. I have the best card, no I have the best! Why didn't you buy the newest card yet dumbass? ect
piracy is the great scapegoat of pc gaming. I was explaining to my friend how difficult it is to pirate a game he wanted, going into great depths about it, taking ages explaining about torrents and mounting and stuff, and then right at the end said "or buy it for a fiver on steam"
steam's so much more convenient for a minimal cost. Pirates have game libraries far in excess of their actual budget, so you wouldn't have gotten the sales in the first place, hence few sales are actually lost, and those that pirated a game that they like may be likely to buy the sequel, acting like free advertising.
Point is that it's the same kind of narrow-minded thinking that decided that all cinematography should be banned back in the 1920s that is looking at this piracy problem so simply.
qft
Also from what I've seen it's far easier to pirate a game on the consoles, rather than on pc.
Differents ways to counter piracy on PC games:
-Cheap price (40$/€ max. for example)
-Good support (Patches, Updates, FAQ, etc...)
-No bullshit 3rd-program DRM (Steam is fine, although a Non-Steam version is still a good alternative)
A lot of game developers seem to forget that easily. Too bad for them.
dumb solution
why would they charge $20 less for one system when they can sell it for $60 on the ps3 and 360
i dont have to blow a disk to get it to work
I'm sure you blow a lot tho. :smug:

I built my PC 2 years ago. The only games I can't play on very high are Metro 2033, GTA IV, and ArmA 2. which is pretty good, considering all the games out there. I do find it depressing how the PC has been relegated to an afterthought by developers though, it's better in every conceivable way than consoles but no-one seems to care since consoles make them richer. Don't get me wrong, I love indie games, but sometimes you want a blockbuster, you want a polished game you can really get your teeth into. Though those are dying too, replaced by faceless, waif-like, content devoid shooters like MW2. The '90s were great, the only platform people bothered releasing FPSes on was the PC, which was good because it's the one that does it best, then halo came along and spawned a slew of horrible FPSes watered down for the consoles. And, of course, PC Gaming was still mainstream.
i dont have to blow a disk to get it to work
I read that as blow a dick
Noo, professional devs don't leave pc to indies. It will be hell
Notch really likes the word "really".
I believe piracy has also had an affect over the PC game developers. When you release a game on PC it is inevitably going to be cracked and illegally downloaded. Why waste the time and money?
I think piracy is simply a scare tactic. The reason the PC market as sort of gone into a depression, I believe, is because the developers/publishers mainly just lost trust in us. The bitchy kids in the family ruined it for everyone, or at least the developers think they ruined it for everyone.
Good thing I don't limit myself to one gaming platform.
Wait, it's a good thing that we're getting the half-assed console ports? How?
