• Google CEO: Internet Anonymity is dangerous
It keeps the world in check.
Yeah, um, no.
We need an unregulated global medium to communicate through. Remember all of Iranian citizens that posted videos of the riots after their election? What do you think Iran would do if they could identify those users? Sure, there are dangers associated with anonymity, but that doesn't mean that we should put an end to it. Stalking and bullying take place outside of the internet too, but that doesn't mean that we should all be fitted with unique ID chips. I'm just as anonymous when I'm walking around on the street as I am when I'm on the internet. If I commit a serious crime in either realm, I can still get caught.
The rest of what you said is a good point though. There will always be someway to communicate anonymously, even if it's not the internet. [editline]03:24PM[/editline]
Uh, I can publish writing, visual arts, music anonymously.
I guess the difference is the difficulty in getting stuff published anonymously through that media.
I can chose to appear on certain television shows with a hidden identity.
Not according to the FCC. Your identity could be given up very easily.
If that's what you want to use the internet for, then why not put your name to it? "I hate my boss." - John Doe Nothing wrong with that. But at the moment, it's: "I hate my boss. I want to blow him the fuck up. 2:32AM today a bomb outside his house will blow up." - ?
You don't seem to realize that leaving your name to something like that would allow your boss to see it, and would get your boss down your neck because you said not nice things about him. And if you say that you wouldn't say that in person anyway, imagine it like gossiping to your friends behind your boss' back.
If that's what you want to use the internet for, then why not put your name to it? "I hate my boss." - John Doe Nothing wrong with that. But at the moment, it's: "I hate my boss. I want to blow him the fuck up. 2:32AM today a bomb outside his house will blow up." - ?
Saying something as simple as "My boss is a dumbass" could make your job Hell.
It was an example rather than a point.
Well it was a very flat example.
You don't seem to realize that leaving your name to something like that would allow your boss to see it, and would get your boss down your neck because you said not nice things about him. And if you say that you wouldn't say that in person, imagine it like gossiping to your friends behind your boss' back.
That's the point. Eric Schmidt was making. You wouldn't do it in person, so why should you be allowed to do it on the internet anonymously.
That's the point. Eric Schmidt was making. It's the equivalent of talking badly of your boss to your friends without him knowing.
You wouldn't do it in person, so why should you be allowed to do it on the internet anonymously.
Why the fuck not? You can't present one good reason why anonymously insulting someone is wrong on the whole, just toss out asinine strawmen to make people feel guilty or afraid. The entirety of your argument thus far has been devoid of content.
In this thread, DogGunn is an anti-privacist. His arguments also consist of "Why" and "Lol". Next thing you know, you'll be saying that our homes shouldn't be private for X hurr durr wat aboot ur boss" reason here.
what he didn't suggest that at all there is also no evidence that google hands over search data to the government, though they could be forced to according to the patriot act
Okay, let me rephrase; to the government. Also, if I remember correctly, Google gave the Bush Administration search data on at least one occasion and Patriot Act or not I personally feel that crosses a line.
If that's what you want to use the internet for, then why not put your name to it? "I hate my boss." - John Doe Nothing wrong with that. But at the moment, it's: "I hate my boss. I want to blow him the fuck up. 2:32AM today a bomb outside his house will blow up." - ?
That's somewhat of a hyperbole. I will concede though that there may be such a case as that on the internet, but in the daily life of an internet user do you really think that A. They would say something like that in any seriousness and B. If they were any at all serious that they would announce something like that?
do you even realize what legalizing defamation would entail? it's about far more than being an asshole. defamation can destroy someone's reputation which can really ruin their career, or even their life.
So why hasn't Jessi Slaughter's family filed a defemation suit? Also DogGunn, i've got your back. :respek:
So why hasn't Jessi Slaughter's family filed a defemation suit?
It really wasn't defamation so much as harassment.
That's somewhat of a hyperbole. It's like a 4chan effect. If that wasn't the idea, and he was just trying to make an anonymous person seem retarded, then I'm giving him too much credit.
I guess the difference is the difficulty in getting stuff published anonymously through that media.
Not really. Anonymous editorials. Graffiti artists like Banksy. Say a person wears a mask and plays at open mike night, he's pretty anonymous. My point being you can be anonymous over other medias.
Not according to the FCC. Your identity could be given up very easily.
Not sure what you're talking about. Criminals/Former Gang members are displayed as anonymous on television all the time.
Why the fuck not? You can't present one good reason why anonymously insulting someone is wrong on the whole, just toss out asinine strawmen to make people feel guilty or afraid. The entirety of your argument thus far has been devoid of content.
lol, it's more like you've chosen to ignore everything. Why the fuck not? Because currently that privilege is abused when people choose to use it. So far the internet has gone untounched from any other "publication law". You can't bully someone anonymously like you can over the internet through mediums such as maganzines or newspapers, but with a click of the button, you're sending through a message to some poor sod who doesn't deserve it, spewing out hatred and other shit. If you haven't seen, been a victim of and been the initiator of cyber bullying, I don't know what world you've been living in, because it's rampant now. It's just one reason why the internet should have some mechanism to protect people from eachother on the internet. If you weren't under some alias, you probably wouldn't have been as abusive in your reply as you were. (here comes some smartass reply to the last comment)

If that wasn't the idea, and he was just trying to make an anonymous person seem retarded, then I'm giving him too much credit.
Fair enough, someone operating under a sense of anonymity could be assumed to act with some degree more bravado that they would normally if they knew that they'd be identified and tied to the posting/info/etc.
lol, it's more like you've chosen to ignore everything. (here comes some smartass reply to the last comment)
Speaking of "publication law" how can you legislate and regulate the internet? Who owns the internet? Do governments have any right to stifle or control the flow information on the internet? What sort of authority do they have? Because if you ask me the internet has taken on a life of it's own so to speak. The internet is something of a seperate entity in terms of legality. You can try to enforce some sort of regulation but there will always be pockets of resistance and with them you have to assume new ways to gain anonymity.
In this thread, DogGunn is an anti-privacist. His arguments also consist of "Why" and "Lol".
Yeah, I've used lol to once, because initialy they didn't understand my post and made a stupid comment. Why because people don't seem to grasp the basics of "freedom of speech" or even what is in question. [editline]03:37PM[/editline]
I think DogGunn's point was that anonymity makes people act more extreme in their thoughts.
That's right. It's the same reason why Godwin's Law exists.
lol, it's more like you've chosen to ignore everything. Why the fuck not? Because currently that privilege is abused when people choose to use it. If you weren't under some alias, you probably wouldn't have been as abusive in your reply as you were. (here comes some smartass reply to the last comment)
So the main reason you want to compromise anonymity is because of cyber-bullying and abuses such as. You know, I was once the victim of cyber bulling when I was 12 or so. And I grew the fuck up. If anything, cyber-bullying and trolling is easier to escape than the equivalent in real life. You can turn off the computer and walk away and live on. Half of what you said in that post is making you sound like Big Brother. Because everybody must be protected from themselves.
Yeah, I've used lol to once, because initialy they didn't understand my post and made a stupid comment. It's the same reason why Godwin's Law exists.
Stupid comment? Excuse me? Here I was thinking I was having somewhat of an intelligent discourse with you and you go and say something like that? Wow, and you are trying to claim the high ground here?
You can't bully someone anonymously like you can over the internet through mediums such as maganzines or newspapers, but with a click of the button, you're sending through a message to some poor sod who doesn't deserve it, spewing out hatred and other shit.
And? Because the words exist, you have to be offended by them? A newspaper is written to a mass audience. A magazine is written to a mass audience. Here? Who do you think reads this shit besides us?
If you haven't seen, been a victim of and been the initiator of cyber bullying, I don't know what world you've been living in, because it's rampant now.
I'm not three, it doesn't physically sting when someone calls me an idiot.
It's just one reason why the internet should have some mechanism to protect people from eachother on the internet.
The internet needs a mechanism to compensate for people being upset that other people don't like them? In the real world we call them "earplugs."
If you weren't under some alias, you probably wouldn't have been as abusive in your reply as you were. (here comes some smartass reply to the last comment)
My name is public on my Steam profile and blog, both of which are linked to in my ID, so no. Call my cellphone, please, I need a laugh. I just respect the right of anyone to talk shit without being hated on by the thought police and tired "think of the children!" pseudointellectual nonsense.
And I grew the fuck up. If anything, cyber-bullying and trolling is easier to escape than the equivalent in real life. You can turn off the computer and walk away and live on.
Maybe you didn't have a mobile phone, but I've seen people get texts from random "letters" of abuse. With the internet growing larger and expanding to more things, the abuse of it, if it remains completely unregulated, like it is in its current state, then more people will find ways to abuse it.
Half of what you said in that post is making you sound like Big Brother.
;) But not really.
Maybe you didn't have a mobile phone, but I've seen people get texts from random "letters" of abuse. Better yet, who has the authority to? Riddle me that Batman.
Maybe you didn't have a mobile phone, but I've seen people get texts from random "letters" of abuse. Then you just don't let out your phone number to everybody and instead share it to people you know aren't assholes. Most people who get phone bombed like that usually deserve it because they give out their information all too easily. You other guys can fight it out for now; I'm going to bed. edit:
Honestly, the Jessi Slaughter shit could have been prevented if she hadn't distributed her information so much.
This.
Going to ignore Xenocidebot because oddly enough, they still act like a three year old.
Then how do you purpose we regulate the internet? Better yet, who has the authority to? Riddle me that Batman.
The only thing I'm for is reducing the amount of anonymity on the internet, other than that, nothing else. No increase in police powers or anything. As for the authority, there's no good answer here. :<
So why hasn't Jessi Slaughter's family filed a defemation suit?
Honestly, the Jessi Slaughter shit could have been prevented if she hadn't distributed her information so much.
Most people who get phone bombed like that usually deserve it because they give out their information all too easily.
And with the internet expanding, you're being increasingly asked to enter in your phone number into stuff. Realistically, if there are numerous people needing to change their phone due to cyberbullying, then theres a problem.
And with the internet expanding, you're being increasingly asked to enter in your phone number into stuff.
Uh, if a website asking you to display more information is the problem then why would you abolish anonymity? That doesn't make sense. In fact requiring less private information to be entered actually sounds like a better preventative measure.
And with the internet expanding, you're being increasingly asked to enter in your phone number into stuff. Realistically, if there are numerous people needing to change their phone due to cyberbullying, then theres a problem.
I have never seen anywhere where you MUST enter your phone number. I've always seen it as optional. If something forces you to enter your phone number to use its services, then I would think twice if I really trusted the website I was accessing with information like that.
Going to ignore Xenocidebot because oddly enough, they still act like a three year old.
You wouldn't say that shit in the real world, remember? So you shouldn't be allowed to say it here. (920) 285 2473 Call me up. Tell me I'm three.
Does not sound good the way we are slowly losing privacy
I'm not three, it doesn't physically sting when someone calls me an idiot.
Truth. The point where harassment/bullying financially, physically, sexually harms you is the point where it should become illegal.
You wouldn't say that shit in the real world, remember? So you shouldn't be allowed to say it here. (920) 285 2473 Call me up. Tell me I'm three.
I really don't believe that's your phone. And I'm not calling it anyway - too expensive from Australia...
