"don't be evil"
What the fuck is Google's problem lately?
yo Google has taken this stance for years. They're just going to monopolize and become a tyrannical corporation similar to that of the one from robocop 2.
What's the point in talking shit about someone if you're not attempting to cause them harm? You don't have to intend to cause harm to someone to be liable for any form of defamation, the plaintiff just has to show they've been injured in some was as a result of the remarks.

I'm pretty sure freedom of speech doesn't mean the freedom to hurt somebody else, especially if it's based on things that aren't true.

do you even realize what legalizing defamation would entail? it's about far more than being an asshole. defamation can destroy someone's reputation which can really ruin their career, or even their life.

Why? Why should you legally be allowed to defame your boss?
As a general rule of thumb, if it's true then it's not defamation. Even though it isn't defamation, your boss could act on it if he sees it and then you get shit-canned. If you decide to file a lawsuit it'd be near-impossible to prove that he fired you because of something you said on a non-anonymous Internet.
Facebook is a website, it's private ownership. The people can regulate it however they please.
Technically Facebook still has to act according to applicable California and United States law, but aside from that, yes, they can.
If that's what you want to use the internet for, then why not put your name to it? "I hate my boss." - John Doe Nothing wrong with that. But at the moment, it's: "I hate my boss. I want to blow him the fuck up. 2:32AM today a bomb outside his house will blow up." - ? It was an example rather than a point.
This is what a subpoena is for. Your boss shouldn't/doesn't have to be able to see the name, but if you can be traced to a crime via your Facebook updates then Facebook releases his information to the authority or gets subpoenaed.
If they keep this up, this may very well become the google campus: [IMG_thumb]http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp229/Ishmael102/COS_EFG_party.gif[/IMG_thumb]
I look forward to day when the Google starts religion so I have reason to go back to old country and become potato farmer!
Internet anonymity is the very fabric of internet freedom and safety. Without the choice of anonymity, we lose that one thing that keeps us safe. Besides, we all have something dark deep down inside that we've all done, things of a dark nature, and anyone who even attempts to say they've done nothing bad is a liar. Take away anonymity, and all that darkness spills out, everybody's crimes are revealed, and any future things are attributed to you. The internet is built up on a thick veil of protective deceit, but it is necessary to prevent everyone harbouring hatred and contempt for each other should the dark truths be revealed. (most of post cut off for size)
I liked this until I realized you were intentionally trying to make it sound like a State of The Union address advocating 'revolution' against our new Antichrist, Lord and Master of Google.
Illegal where? We have freedom of speech in the United States and in Europe, but in countries without freedom of speech, this will allow the government to censor the internet as much as they want.
And then Google will pull out of the country. They've threatened to do that before, you know.
Sir, I do not TROLL people, not intentionally anyway. I merely support the rights of privacy and internet freedom, and they are rights I would fight tooth, nail and brain to protect, even though our teeth and nails are ineffective as weapons compared to our brains and the weapons we can make with them.
This may be crossing the line, but I highly doubt you'd do anything more than complain about Google becoming totalitarian China, regulating your Soylent Green and installing brain monitors in you.
This is my theory: There are certain people and organizations(hereafter called The Powers That Be- PTB) running things. A company like Google comes along, and does well. People like them and use their services. When they get TOO successful, the PTB step in. It happens in secret of course. They 'talk' to Google's leaders and explain the situation. The situation? Google starts to introduce new ideas, such as requiring real names. You'll notice these new ideas benefit Google in no way, they do benefit the PTB though. This way everyone blames Google, thinking some corporation is to blame. All the time Google is only doing what it's commanded to do and taking the fall for people who want to remain in the shadows. Think this crazy talk? You don't remember when the NSA wanted to intercept everyone's communications and the phone companies simply stepped aside and let them? Same thing is happening, except now it's going to be with the internet.
By PTB do you mean any sane government organization? When it comes into the dominion of national security, or, really any branch of the legal tree, you're going to want major companies to be logging anything just in case they're needed. Also, since you bring up that NSA fiasco, tapping every phone would serve as an amazing communications blockage for domestic spies and 'terrorists.' The Powers That Be aren't some sort of evil black hand controlling your fucking lives and trying to know everything about everyone, they're just government agencies and lawmakers who have the mindset that being able to monitor communications is an invaluable legal tool. Speaking of which...
"don't be evil"
I swear that if I don't see another one thousand of these posts within the next day I will forever have lost faith in the collective Facepunch original and witty snark. MAKE ME PROUD, FACEPUNCH!
They use google earth to track us down.
All theese recent threads are making me really worried for the internet. :(
Probably because you're socially retarded?
I think you are socially retarded. Seriously. You have been going on about how we shouldn't be anonymous on the internet because we aren't anonymous in real life. Guess what moron. We are anonymous in real life too. You don't see people on the street with name tags written in some kind of neon ink that you could read from miles away. You can't just go up to people and demand that they tell you who they are. People only give their personal information out in the real world when they need too, like when they are buying something with a credit card or going doing business at a bank. The same concept applies to the internet as well. Now shut the hell up.
You wouldn't badmouth your boss in person, so why would you publish it on the internet for the world to see? That makes no sense to me.
And as for this stupid ass argument, no I wouldn't badmouth my boss in person. But if I hated my boss I could badmouth about him to some stranger on a subway that I happen to get in a conversation with and still be anonymous about it.
I only use Google for searching for websites. Why would they need my name?
I only use Google for searching for websites. Why would they need my name?
So in case you become rich or powerful, they can blackmail you with the creepy porn you watch to make you push their political agenda :tinfoil:
You wouldn't say that shit in the real world, remember? So you shouldn't be allowed to say it here. (920) 285 2473 Call me up. Tell me I'm three.
Wow, are you this angry? you are basically saying "SAY THAT TO MY FACE, NOT ONLINE, SEE WHAT HAPPENS". lighten up. EDIT: anonymity should be just that, anonymous. nothing more, nothing less. Google can eat a bowl of dicks for all i care.
Wow, are you this angry? you are basically saying "SAY THAT TO MY FACE, NOT ONLINE, SEE WHAT HAPPENS". lighten up.
Except it's a point about internet anonymity being a different issue than physical or voice anonymity, and not the incredibly immature idea you came up with. EDIT: OR something like that. More just pointing out DogGunn's hypocrisy.
/Google releases a list of its users with IPs, Addresses and Consequently Names. I'm sure it has been said many times, but remember the Blizzard incident? Anonymity has pontentially stopped people's lives being ruined, many times. People probably post with an anonymous name in love advice maybe four or five times a day minimum. What happens if some stalker came into a forum with real names and found a hot girl, then went through facebook to find the posters' name, then said girl? EEK!
Right, Google knows more about you then your friends do probably. Running NoScript and switching from Google search to Yauba(anonymous search) This is the only way we can help combat this, the further this goes on the more power they will have.

Because you're forgetting, what you do, how you do it, what you wear, your face, your body shape etc are all parts of your identity. If you constantly saw someone who you didn't know their name, you'd probably have some idea of their identity. Maybe you leave the house so irreguarly that everyone you ever see is completely new to you?
And as for this stupid ass argument, no I wouldn't badmouth my boss in person. How do criminals get caught? Do they leave their name behind?
privacy is partial anonymity, You are not regonized by the people which are not allowed to access your information. Anonymity is... well -total anonymity. Either you have anonymity or you don't. It's kind of a switch, There's no middle ground unless you're dealing with dumbasses. You are not regonized by anyone unless you give away information which links you to a known identity. The loss of anonymity begins from small things like making a contract with the local ISP, Everytime you do something stupid you can be tracked. It's a good thing in a sense, But it can, has been and will be abused. Thank god for wireless networks and all kinds of ID spoofings. When you create a profile anywhere, you create a connection between it -and the other profiles you've created. So lets say that you've used the internet for four years, you have facebook, a hotmail account, an altarnitive email account, you've registered on sites and so on. Even if you'd had sockpuppets you've still created connection between all these things with the other releavent information which you constantly give away while operating on the internet. Everyone googles things all the fucking time, Google has probably the most power over the privacy on the internet because everyone's using the google and they have a database which records everything that you do so they could make good business. "Don't be evil" is load of bullshit at this point because the people who work for google can access these profiles and some people outside the corporation can acces these profiles. So in reality theres no privacy with google, atleast not anymore -if you'd want to see it that way. It's just bunch of valuable profiles(valuable for those who know how, where and when to use them), anyone who has contacts or money can get hands on them. So yeah, What the google's been doing behind the scene's been bullshit, just like with the facebook, But this is going too far. A quick and easy example how your "privacy" is breached for those who know less of these things. You play some games on steam, You're being a dick. At some point the dude otherside of the line gets mad and decides to scare you off. He googles your ID, And finds that you've been banned on 50 servers. Your IP range is bbb.zzz.xxx.yyy. He gets the most fresh IP from some banlog and uses it to find other possible profiles. At some point he finds an alternative nickname which belongs to you, he continues googling with the new information he has found and somepoint he finds your post from the past where you're sharing your email address, However this email address is old. But at somepoint you've informed your friends that your email address has changed and -lucky you, he findsout your new email address which he uses to find your social networking profile which reveals everything. Somewhere in the future you recieve a mail which makes you piss your pants because you didn't expect this shit to happen. Not to imply that you're going to get your ass kicked, but there's a good chance of making yourself look an ass and having your life ruined for you. Sites which require your personal information are one of the many cancers on the internet. For sake of your own so called anonymity, don't create profiles which may make you sorry. And remember the thumbrule of the internet, anything that goes on it stays on it. So don't make something which you'd regret.

Look at google. Then look at Yahoo. Look at google. Now back to me. Google is getting worse! Yahoo is now diamonds!
Saying that being anonymous is dangerous is like saying radiation suits cause more radiation damage.
Oh man. I'm worried now. Google used to be cool. Fucking fascists.
Look at google. Then look at Yahoo. Look at google. Now back to me. Google is getting worse! Yahoo is now diamonds!
Hello, anonymous, look at google, now back to Yahoo!, now back at Google, now back to Yahoo!. Sadly, Google isn’t Yahoo!, but if Google stopped being evil and switched to being good, it could be like Yahoo!. Look at Google, back to Yahoo!, where are you? You’re on Yahoo! with the search engine that Google's search engine could be like. What’s in your hand, back at Google. I have it, it’s a search engine with all of the anonymity that you love. Look again, your anonymity is now diamonds. Anything is possible when your search engine is like Yahoo! and not Google. I’m on a server.
