Clearly this shows that dogs are superior.
It's a matter of preference. Clearly, both animals are affectious, but in different ways. While the cat appears to act selfishly, it's a much better pet for somebody who doesn't have the time and resources to care for a dog.
Every time I visit my friend's house his cat usually always spends time/sleeps/chills in the room I'm in no matter what. He sleeps on all my things no matter where they are, my suitcase, my accessories on top of the bookshelf, and most of the time my lap. I must be a friendly cat.
You smell different, so he's giving off his scent on your stuff by sleeping on it.
Cats were never bred to be real pets, they were kept feral to a point where they could be used to hunt rats on farms and be largely independent, they do a better job at dealing with pests than any rat poison. The cat is for someone who largely doesn't want a whole lot of responsibility of looking after an animal but wants to have comfort in knowing there is one near them who will occasionally show some affection to them.
Or for people who aren't fans of needy and annoying dogs. When you have to check a cat's blood glucose half a dozen times a day and give him two insulin shots a day because he's diabetic, and have been doing that for over two years now, maybe you're willing to take on a bit more responsibility for them.
My cats knead me every time I'm in my robe. It's like a nice, soft massage with purring vibration included.
My cat does this to me, but instead of a thick robe it's a thin t-shirt. And instead of massages it's pain from sharp claws. Surely cats don't use their claws when they do this to their mother?
My cat gets cuddly as fuck and then just smacks me(without claws) out of fucking nowhere in the middle of the purrrrriest cuddling ever. Fucking psycho, I love her [editline]16th January 2014[/editline]
My cat does this to me, but instead of a thick robe it's a thin t-shirt. It can actually get to where it is a issue for the cat as well.
Cats are not worth the "litter box smell" your house gets.
If you don't buy terrible litter and actually regularly clean it, that doesn't happen. And make sure you actually have a big enough litter box or enough litter boxes for your cats. If you have numerous cats but one small litter box, it will cause a lot of problems.
I'll have to tell my cat owning friends that. They have 2 adorable fuckers but one small litter box. Its just an awful smell, as soon as I smell it I think "lazy and dirty"
They're likely never cleaning and buying the worst litter they can find. And going with just like a medium sized litter box will be more than adequate. You need to occasionally scoop it out to clean it, then after a little while you need to empty it out completely and wash it and put fresh litter in. Anyone who says having cats requires no responsbility hasn't the faintest clue what they are talking about.

She occasionally gets a nail stuck in the two rooms we have carpet in, but I thought at least that would happen to cats anyway.
My cat things that I am a scratchtoy
What the fuck are you doing to the poor thing? We've dealt with cats that were in full on fight-or-flight mode as if it was their final stand in life and never had anything like that.
I thought that was somewhat common knowledge, I remember reading a book about handling cats where something like this was mentioned
Well, only now just realized we have never trimmed her claws. She has a scratching post, but I guess that's not enough? She occasionally gets a nail stuck in the two rooms we have carpet in, but I thought at least that would happen to cats anyway.
If you keep them trimmed, it shouldn't happen. Also, the scratching posts don't really do much. They'll also resharpen their claws themselves very quickly. So they have to be actually trimmed so that, even sharp they're not long enough to do much.
My bombay gets very lonely if he is left alone for more than 12-16 hours, much like a dog. Especially if he wakes up and everyone is out of the house / gone. He isn't quite as attention-needy as a dog would be, but he prefers our company more than being off doing his own thing.
My cat things that I am a scratchtoy
no the fork goes in your food, not you
Cats actually get quite attached to their owners if they are treated well. Trying to treat a cat like a dog will result in the cat holding little attachment to you. If you basically act like "Yeah its here whatever." then it won't develop much of a relationship. However if you actually put effort in to bonding with the cat and treating it right, they're very loving animals. Hell, I have a cat that, if I kept my bedroom door open, would stay with me 24/7. He is by my side any time he can get to me. When I was still in school, he'd follow me downstairs to the garage every morning to try to get in the truck and go with me. So yeah, anyone who says cats take no responsibility or don't get attached to their owners has no idea what they are talking about. And further, if they are a cat owner and say this, they're bad one.

my cat likes to sit in my lap whenever i play video games which results in me putting the keyboard on top of her. she seems to not mind
Well, my cat likes me alot, prefers to lay on my bed towards anything else and greets me when I come in. But that cat is a pretty old one and she is showing signs of dementia(or at least the cat equilevant). And there is the other cat we have, who is very attached to my sister and she scracthes on her bedroom door if she isnt there/wants to be let in and is just overly obessed with her BUT this cat is an shelter cat who had some traumatic expierences.

Damn dude
Dogs own cats own too they're both great pets to have. I grew up with always at least 2+ dogs in the house so I'm more comfortable with them, but if I ever have the chance to have a cat and a dog I would do it in a heartbeat.
I love my cats. He has a lazy eye and his sister is a runt. He is siamese and makes this loud "MERRRRRRRRRRRRRR" noise instead of a "meow." He loves to get under the covers with me and lay on my stomach or by my head in the winter. She fucking loves Doritos and (no joke) fucking loves Mountain Dew, i shit you not.
Cats are not worth the "litter box smell" your house gets.
Our cats go outside. We don't even have a litterbox.
The article is bullshit. Cats have an enormous attachment to its owners. They just don't show it in the same way humans and dogs do. As an owner of 3 cats and ive had 6 cats over the years i can assure you that cats have strong emotions for their owners. Treat a cat well and with respect, the cat will love you back. Treat a cat badly and it won't give a shit about anything. About 5 years ago one of my cats disapeared. In the midst of winter 6 months later someone had found her about 30km from our home. When me and my father got there to pick her up, the cat went batshit crazy with happiness. It took hours for her to stop huggin us, meowin and purrin :3 Also have a cat ever brought you a gift? I have recived mouses, birds and a fully grown dead hare once... it must have taken ages to bring that through the tiny catdoor, up the stairs and up into my bed... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2CX20bBNJE Cats are awesome.

I'm not entirely sure about this research, tbh. I mean, we know that cats know about other animals, like dogs, mice, birds, etc. Unless they think a bird is a flying cat, I suspect they have a decent idea that we're not the same species that they are.

We have two small dogs that more or less act like cats. One of them even once caught a bird, killed it and put it on the doorstep. The other chases laser dots just like a cat would. Straight-up crazy bitches. And to make it even more weird, they're Papillons.
When I was still at home, my cat would wait for me to get out of the shower and rub up against my legs, he was being my cuddly towel. My cats go where ever the people are in the house. My other cat always cuddles up to my dad every morning while he's getting ready and before he goes to work, she cuddles up on his shoulder purrs away. Cats are very affectionate
