It's what it represents.
The only thing it represents is a snickers bar out of a vending machine. If switching to a historically strong, widely accepted currency used by an affiliation of nations that you've already been a part of for decades somehow compromises your national identity, then you have a shitty national identity.
But whatever, as an American you know all about Europe, right?
[editline]01:11AM[/editline]
Hey FDR got it all wrong America should have moved to the barter system.
A chicken is always worth a chicken.
The whole world needs to have one Currency, this should be the Credit.
But whatever, as an American you know all about Europe, right?
When you can't argue properly: accuse your opponent of not understanding things based on the country they're from :D
Don't wuss out on me, either support your point of view with facts and logic or shut up
And another thing. We don't eat Snickers, we eat Dairy Milks.
Then Cadbury's got taken over by Kraft, because of the shitty fucking 2002 Enterprise Act.

Leave Frank alone, he had a hard life, he ended up in a Wheelchair, he fought through both World Wars.

still waitin' for your rebuttal
Explain to me how switching to the Euro immediately causes the UK to lose all of it's historical identity or whatever it is you think it'll do
affiliation of nations that you've already been a part of for decades
Britain has always been on the sidelines of the EU. We have a shitload of opt-outs that we have so we don't have to do anything.
PS Europe is a continent.
[editline]01:16AM[/editline]
Lots of people had hard lives. Doesn't mean they're angels.
Britain has always been on the sidelines of the EU. We have a shitload of opt-outs that we have so we don't have to do anything.
That's besides the point. The point is that it would be, by most accounts, a good idea to switch to the Euro, and the only basis most of you guys are criticizing it on is some sort of vague nationalist ideal. You said it yourself, "it's what it represents". Elaborate on that, if you will.
PS Europe is a continent.
But the European union isn't. Not all European countries are part of it bro.
It's not all or nothing like that you dolt. You can start using a different currency without abandoning your nation's heritage. Germany, France, or the Netherlands didn't suddenly lose all national identity when they switched.
Nice. Congratulations on completely misinterpreting what I was saying.
Aside from that fact that the currency, Pound Sterling, has been around for ages and by getting rid of it you are discarding a major part of the countries heritage, my main point was to highlight that such a callous attitude to national pride starts on a rapid spiral towards what I described in my previous post. It's not about all or nothing and personally I thought France and Germany were more unique when they were using the Frank and Deutschmark.
If you're going to insult my intelligence, at least get a grip of what I am talking about first.
It's what it represents.
A currency that cripples our exports and isn't backed up by a gold reserve?

"If W happens, then X Y and Z will inevitably happen just because"
That's not an argument.
lazyguy you are really bad at arguing
sorry :)
It's not about all or nothing
Really? Well...
my main point was to highlight that such a callous attitude to national pride starts on a rapid spiral towards what I described in my previous post.
That sounds pretty all or nothing to me. And then you justify it with:
and personally I thought France and Germany were more unique when they were using the Frank and Deutschmark.
Lol that's insultng. No really, that's really insulting to france and germany. It's insulting and it's total bullshit and you know it. You're pulling it out of your ass, nevermind the fact that I seriously doubt you were alive when that happened.
I'd like you to elaborate on that to me, ok? Explain to me how France has, since switching to the Euro, is now on a "rapid spiral" to becoming become a colorless cultural wasteland totally devoid of national identity. Go into detail about that, if you will.
But the European union isn't. Not all European countries are part of it bro.
No shit.

It's quarter past one in the morning.
I know that saying this will probably result in a long argument that will go completely off topic, but:
You're seriously suggesting that maintaining pride in our history is a bad thing? You really think we should just get rid of everything that makes our country unique and end up as some generic nation with nothing to feel good about? Why not just change the name of the country to Generic Country 1 while you are at it...
How about we have some national pride in things that deserve national pride not a currency that just so happens to be unique to us?
I don't see how that is insulting, what is more unique? A country with a currency not used anywhere else in the world, or a country used by many? And if anyone is 'pulling it out of their ass' then it's you; that retort came from nowhere and with no justification. In my opinion he made a valid point.
And our case is a lot different to Germany's and France's, the Monarch and the Currency are literally some of the only things we have left of culture in our country. You have to go to some remote village in Suffolk to find some otherwise. France has been very preservative of it's culture, and Germany has a strong sense of its national heritage, and is making a new name for itself in the world with all of its exports.
Though Mandelson is a tosser, it is inevitable that we get the euro.
you realise this.
good to see FP is full of euro-skeptics who don't realise what could actually be achieved with the EU, and that the EU is perhaps one of the best things we have going right now.
Indeed, I can sort of understand the people who diss the European Union. But bear in mind that everything has its pros and cons.
And currently, European union has a lot more good things than bad things.
England is weird. They are always the outsiders of the EU. They drive on the wrong side of the road, don't use the Euro, steering wheel is on the other side
inb4 English forum rage

Yerh I mean if we're proud of our currency I say we should be proud of the fact we drive on the other side of the road. National identity mang.
The pound sterling shall never be lost!
Fuck you EU.
We need the pound its what seperates us from the rest, oh and that lazy queen we got.
Fuck off, I don't want to use the Euro. Stop speaking for the whole country you fucker.
If Britain switches to the euro it wont be anytime soon.
Is he trying to get himself shot?
You guys, you don't understand, France is part of the EU, and Britain can't be seen doing what France is doing. That would look like we ENJOY being near them!

I'm not actually racist.

Yeah pretty soon we will all be buying frogs legs and schnitzels with that filthy euro because Mandleson burned our national identity at a pyre.
Guys joining the Eurozone would be great for Britain, the pound's worth is almost the same as the Euro's, and if the United Kingdom does so it'll have great long-term benefits.
For example, it'd greatly improve trade.
Also nationalism is a stupid superstition of the past, just like religion. Move on, ye prats.
People don't want to switch to the Euro because the central European bank sets interest rates. A big slice of the UK's money earning comes from financial services, if they were to go under again, it would effectively restrict our ability to pull out of a crisis like the one in Greece.
Personally, i'd like to join the Euro. We seem to of half arsed the whole joining the EU process and it would be good to just take care of it.
