I don't know why it's so hard for Hollywood to get right. Silent Hill and Resident Evil could have been absolutely stellar but no, lets ignore the source material and what made them such great and atmospheric works of art.
Hollywood writers either cater to a formula and try to twist game movies into that formula, or just want to use video game movies as their stepstool for trying to do whatever the fuck they want. i.e: Resident Evil past the first film.
I said it before but I remember something about Gabe being extremely dissatisfied with Half-Life movie adaptation scripts because they went so off the rails like horseback combat and shit that it makes you wonder if these script writers even actually care for these games or just look at a synopsis and some artwork and do whatever the fuck they want.

I felt like I'd been robbed of my ten bucks. I just feel sorry for Chris Paolini.
So far I only see 5 reviews out with 3 of them being negative, but considering one of them is from a major publication and calls it "battlefield earth" without the benefit of unintentional comedy, I'd call that a pretty bad sign lol. Still, we'll figure out what the actual consensus is in a few days.
The first Mortal Kombat movie was also pretty decent imo

How exactly would it be an adaptation of Warcraft if it didn't tell the story of... you know, Warcraft? It wouldn't make any sense to just jump randomly forward in the chronology of the story.

Idk the fall of lorderon would be a good story to tell, just 120 minutes of arthas slaughtering everyone, have the story set around maybe 5 adventurers, say a priest, a warrior, a mage, hunter, and a rogue...maybe be about getting the fuck out of the city while the legion takes over
One of the main criticisms I've read is the script is way too name heavy, like it spends a lot of time introducing all the characters fans want even though they don't play too much of a role
Aside from Wreck-it-ralph has there ever been any actually not shitty video game based or even themed movies out there, ever?
Mortal Kombat is something that people hold in great regard, but even I hear that stuffs fairly low budget and isn't quite up there.
[editline]25th May 2016[/editline]
then again, I hear pretty amazing stuff about the Halo shorts/films
but the lift of good game-to-films is really, really short. At best we only seem to have moderately acceptable films.

mortal kombat.
i also liked the prince of persia movie.
If that percentage doesn't go up fast, there's a very good chance this might kill the video game movie adaptation as a whole.
Silent Hill (at least the first one) was pretty good for a video game movie I thought. Not great but good. Prince of Persia was well done but they made a bunch of weird plot decisions.
Wonder how Warcraft fans will like this movie - though if only they like it, it won't be enough to save it.

I'm okay with that. I'll go and see this because WoW kept me a virgin until I was like 19, some of the best years of my life, but seriously I just don't see any video game adapted films doing well, it's like they're doomed to be shit. I think people go at it the wrong way, like someone previously said about the resident evil and silent hill films, the atmosphere is exchanged for bullshit bravado.
I always hoped this would do well, but deep down inside we all knew it would probably fall short.

Mortal Kombat is considered good because it was a movie about people beating the crap out of one another with a thistle thin story, like the games. It may not have had all of the special moves or fatalities of the game and a few of the characters had different origins and motives( [sp]namely Scorpion and Sub-Zero were technically Shang Tsung's henchmen as opposed to just entrants to the tournament with "mysterious pasts and motives"[/sp] ), but it was what people wanted: people beating the crap out of one another with a thin story.

I hope you're not talking about Halo: The Fall of Reach.
That mini-series had some of the worst animation and voice acting I've ever seen in any medium, especially for a mini-series released in late 2015. Not to mention that the characters looks absolutely artificial and ugly.
Even the original Halo is miles above in terms of animation quality and voice acting, it's so unbelievably bad.
I feel at this point its pretty obvious Hollywood doesn't give a fuck about transitioning video game franchises to the screen properly. Maybe its time for them to abandon the big screen and move to the small screen where the writers for the actual games can work with TV writers to adapt it properly.

not gonna lie, a Warcraft series produced by netflix sounds very appealing
I don't know why people hoped it's gonna be good. Video game movies don't have a great track record.
Did you know that there's gonna be a Gran Turismo Movie? Really? Though i heard it's gonna be some documentary or something.

They nailed the atmosphere in that movie.
Well of course it's fucking awful, the trailers were way too bad for the movie to have any chance at being any good
I think if they just opted for a full CGI movie instead of mixing live action actors and shots it would be better. It just doesn't work well at all when you have a life like character next to some cartoony cgi ork and backdrop
Feels like its trying to take a note from Avatar but doing it rather badly.

In both cases you can totally blame the directors for the shitshow
Resident Evil turned into an excuse for the director to make his wife the main character and a massive mary sue and the guy who did the silent hill movies legitimately has a massive fetish for american women and made every major character female and forced into really weirdly sexual scenarios throughout both films
But Blizzard was heavily involved with the WoW movie right? Or maybe I'm wrong
The first Silent Hill movie is actually not that bad, mostly because the director and pretty much anyone involved with the practical effects and choreography was a fan of the games so it turned out to be a pretty solid love letter to the franchise.
I thought it was a pretty solid movie. :(
mortal kombat.

Prince of Persia had nothing to do with the game, however. Even the setting is barely there, just the atmosphere. But as a stand alone yeah, it was good.
Same is with Max Payne, it shits so fucking much on the game setting as well. As a stand alone it was fine, as a Max Payne-based movie it was atrocious.
The basis of a video game is the gameplay, not the story. Most video games have shit stories when looked at solely through that lens..
Or the stories can't fit in a single movie. In the case of WoW or TES you'd need LoTR sized trilogy to get a good amount of lore in. Otherwise you are left with little context for the world. When I was still actively playing WoW I would spend five hours gaming and another five hours reading the wiki for lore, I can't imagine what you could possibly fit into average movie runtime.
I thought it was a pretty solid movie. :(
This is based on 4 reviews. That's not even close to enough data to properly rate a movie.
The basis of a video game is the gameplay, not the story. Most video games have shit stories when looked at solely through that lens. And the few ones that do still are played for the gameplay at the end of the day.
What does this even mean? Is this some sort of attempt to prove that a video game can't have a story worth porting over to a film?
I feel at this point its pretty obvious Hollywood doesn't give a fuck about transitioning video game franchises to the screen properly. Mind you, Duncan had to work with Blizzard's writing, and their current writers are awful.
If it was written by anybody else, it could've worked very well.

Video game movies have kind of been dead for the past five years, this and Assassin's Creed seem like an attempt at revival if anything. I mean I can't think of many video game movies that have come out this decade
I'm still not convinced that this movie is utter crap
I will wait for more reviews and go see it
I've waited for this since vanilla
