I don't see what's wrong with Metro.
I don't see what's wrong with Metro as design guideline / style. And while I don't think the Metro UI in Windows 8 is bad, I don't think it's exactly good either. And Metro apps, at least the ones I tried, were pretty lacking in features. I can do more with my phone (WP7) than with some apps in the Metro UI in Windows 8. But for example, I actually like the way Visual Studio 11 looks. And the latest screenshots (added color) pretty much handled the issues I had before (most icons were hard to distinguish since they were all black).
I don't see what's wrong with Metro.
I don't think using a touch-optimized UI on a desktop PC is right
I think Metro is hideous. It looks like if hipsters designed a theme based on the Windows Basic one.
I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't mind metro and what MS is trying to accomplish with it. As long as they leave in the traditional desktop, I'm all for it... but this move is bullshit.
I love VS2010. I cant imagine the pain of developing for Metro only if you don't buy the full version. C# got me into programming and I love that language.
I don't think using a touch-optimized UI on a desktop PC is right
You don't have to use it, I don't understand why people think they're forced to use Metro apps. The start screen still functions as a start menu that you can mouse/keyboard in and works exactly like the current start menu. But for apps, you never have to use it, at all ever. WinKey, Type, Enter. Searching still functions like before. Click the left most part of the taskbar, click an icon. Opening a program still works like before. Honestly it seems like everyone thinks the desktop is gone and there's nothing but Metro apps from here on out, when it's simply not true. Also as for VS, just use VS2010 Express or an alternative IDE. It's not like they become worse when a new one comes out.

I tried out the new Metro "Start menu" on one of the betas a ways back, and I thought it was neat to say the least. People think that Microsoft will, eventually, completely forget about the Desktop. I don't really believe that, though. As far as my experience goes with Windows 8 (may be a bit outdated, though...), it's simply just the new Start menu. Maybe they just want to get the most out of the community for Metro?
Well, time to get on the linux bandwagon then.
Well, time to get on the linux bandwagon then.
Biggest over reaction in this thread yet. Besides you still use Windows XP. This doesn't affect you anyway.
VS2010 suits my purposes perfectly fine and afaik it works in Windows 8.
And as you can see, this is facepunch going waaaay over the top here. Download VS2010
Still going strong on VS08. On another note, is it really worth it switching to 2010? Last time I was going to make the switch, I didn't feel like getting into all the changes and such and switched back to 08.

Other than a bit different ui there's not many changes

VS2010 is nicer to use, but I find I'm more productive on VS2008.
Microsoft just LOVES making awesome things and then trashing them, don't they?
I hope steam for Linux comes out soon, so I can move away from Windows.
Gnome shell > Win8 bastardized Aero and mobile phone Metro. I can't wait to switch over.
I hope steam for Linux comes out soon, so I can move away from Windows.
There's a lot more to it than that. We would need native support for a lot of games before I would consider switching over fully. [editline]22nd May 2012[/editline] Plus, in my opinion, Libre Office is nowhere near as usable as the MS Office Suite.

Are you fucking serious? This had better not kill off XNA.
The whole "Metro" look is a huge case of form over function. Still rockin' VS2008 either way.
fuck microsoft is becoming the new apple
fuck microsoft is becoming the new apple
But Apple hasn't stepped down from being a cunt yet, this means we will have two of them going at it, at the same time! :saddowns:
People will just start moving away from Windows if M$ keeps going in this direction. I'd absolutely KILL to see a world where Linux is the main OS, with mainstream apps developed for it
The whole "Metro" look is a huge case of form over function. Still rockin' VS2008 either way.
Metro is a design guideline and style, a good one at that. But depending on how the developer develops their application will depend exactly how functional the application is. It has nothing to do with Metro itself. More developers not realising the potential of the style. In the right hands a Metro application could be incredible, and there are a few proof of concept UIs built to the Metro style that are amazing. And would work exactly the same as the desktop equivalent if developed. Oh man we totally never thought of doing that to show our hate towards a company. Fuck you're original. Stop that shit. It's fucking pathetic.
Windows 8 and Metro are going to blow up in Microsoft's face worse than Vista did.
Doubt it. Win8 will actually work on most computers when it launches. Unlike Vista due to consumer stupidity. And will be more embedded in the market thanks to the tablet section. It would take a cock up of astronomical proportions to end MS in one product. Windows 8 is nowhere near that bad.

This is actually less tragic than the new VS UI. If you want to make tablet apps, develop for iPad.
This is actually less tragic than the new VS UI.
The Beta UI or the RC UI. Or both?
