• Video Games May Hinder Learning for Boys

I've learned words from video games. Iber, Panther, Stuka, Rimfire, RIS, ect. [editline]09:14PM[/editline] And fuck this survey I get all A's.
Oh wow. My native language is Finnish. I can write in English better than many English people. Why? Video games. ONLY video games. I now have A's in EVERY single English test, as they are way too easy for me. Also, the lots of random trivia you learn from them can also be quite helpful.
I think there's some truth to this. Wasting too much time on video games, computers, hobbies, anything instead of studying can cause issues. While the article may be painting games in a negative light, I would say there are some points to consider. Parents I would say should definitely make sure their kids aren't wasting away five hours on gaming when they should at the very least spend half an hour getting their homework in order. So I don't think this is saying playing video games makes you stupid. It's wasting time. Or at least that's how I see it. But it won't matter, I know people'll go "I play lots of games but am still smart". It's the same case with me, but we can't be dense and just ignore these things. It may not be the case for other people.
Well I'm an avid gamer yet I get the highest marks in the class so fuck off. [editline]07:08AM[/editline] Basically, if you're dumb enough to not notice that you're playing these games too much and you need to study, then your marks were probably going to be bad anyway.
Well I'm an avid gamer yet I get the highest marks in the class so fuck off.
And you're aged 6 to 9? :downs:
Well that explains alot
Honestly? Video games such as MGS have helped me with my writing and vocabulary.
I only see idiotic 12 year olds spelling terribly because of video games...
Parents fault not the games
Parents fault not the games
Dont forget crappy teachers and schools too
I learned how to read off GTA and Warcraft The people need to do the experiment again
My first language is Spanish, so I learned pretty much all the English I know at first through movies and TV, and later through the Internet and videogames. Videogames are a good way to catch your interest on things you would probably consider boring -- for instance, who wasn't more interested in History after playing "Age of Empires"? Now I'm a huuuuge sucker for ancient History... and to think I hated that subject back in highschool!
I got a computer at the age of 6. Thanks to it I've developed brilliant skills and my language and mathematical skills were not affected too badly. I have a crappy mathematical side inherited from my father but I also inheritied his natural pathfinding skills, dump me in a city and I can find a way out quickly and remember the route! Also thanks to getting a computer at the age of 6, it meant that when I was bullied at school, I'd come home and frag people instead of going out and killing animals. Tl;dr - Computers stopped me going on a rampage and killing my classmates.
I don't think video games hinder learning. They just get in the way of learning and homework etc.

That's bullshit, I've learned most of my English from video games, and my grades aren't bad either even though I play a lot.
I've learnt most of my english from video-games, although it is true that gaming may hinder me from doing my homework, this applies to everything else too though, books, tv, hanging with friends.
Hell, I learned basic Japanese from play import games.

The smartest boy in my class plays games, while the dumber ones play soccer every evening and only play CS 1.6, DotA and doesn't even know where to get drivers for graphics cards. [editline]08:15PM[/editline] Give them PC instead of a PS2, they'll learn much more. Include internet, block sites that you don't want them to visit if you're really paranoid.
You can play DotA on a PS2? What is this sorcery!
The fact that I couldn't beat Ocarina of Time without understanding the text, made my push myself to read.
I thought the exact opposite has been proven time and time again. Besides, people are different than eachother, and are raised differently than eachother. Sure if you give a kid a playstation and never encourage him to do well in school or teach them any basic life principles, then the kid's probably going to be a dud. And on the other hand, just because kids with no learning skills have gaming consoles and occupy most of their time with them doesn't mean it was the fault of the video games in the first place. Does that mean they assume everyone who has played video games from a young age is unintelligent or has a problem learning? This article is implying that video game consoles are some sort of intelligence-sucking black hole, when really most of the time they simply don't teach people that much (other than hand-to-eye coordination and the occasional focus on teamwork), because they're a form of entertainment. Just like kids aren't going to develop excellent learning skills if their parents just put them in front of a TV all the time and don't help them understand the world. Video gaming CAN inhibit learning if it's all the kid does and the parent does nothing about it.
my hand eye coordination was improved from goldeneye my logic/reasoning was improved by pokemon strategy=starcraft/red alert so i've learned lots from vidya gaems And ocarina taught me to be responsible for shit
Been gaming my whole life, suck my 3.7 GPA.
Sorry, but "Video Games May Hinder Learning" is not the same thing as "Kids Need to Do Their Fucking Homework."
Bullshit I say. Battlefield 1942 has taught me more English than any teacher ever has.
Go for the flag! [editline]03:50PM[/editline]
Been gaming my whole life, suck my 3.7 GPA.
Suck my .75 GPA
I now know that valuble gems are often found wedged under doors.
I learned how to read off GTA and Warcraft
I learned how to spell "Kill Frenzy"
Here we go again: More biased research into video games being the scourge of humanity. I actually became interested in reading partially due to games like final fantasy.
How would Final Fantasy make you want to read It makes me want to kill myself
