thats an good point though
cyclists shouldnt be on roads if they dont pay the tax
There is no road tax, there is an emissions tax on motor vehicles.
The upkeep of roads is paid for via the normal tax that comes off your wages. (IE Everyone).
[editline]22nd May 2013[/editline]
So yes cyclists do pay tax for the roads.
This whole "road tax" thing sounds completely silly. Is it really a common "card" pulled in the UK? "I PAY ROAD TAX" makes me think they don't know that everyone pays for the upkeep of streets. I can't picture a country where some people don't pay for the upkeep of roads.
Its not like cyclists also pay for the roads through taxation. :v:

It's a common card pulled pretty much everywhere against cyclists, despite most cyclists also owning cars.
Tbh I am on her side not the cyclists if you want to cycle everywhere go to the dutch or china. This is Britain and the British roads were build for car usages so naturally you will become ran over if you are on the roads cycling.
Now I know how it feels when your braincells commits suicide.
What a cunt.
Bah. I came in here feeling the woman was a massive asshole, but all this thread has accomplished is make me hate cyclists even more.
Well, thanks for proving my feeling towards you guys were not misguided.
I dislike cyclists as much as other drivers but I don't think I'd ever hit one. Annoying cunts as they can be, they're still people. Mostly.
Some people in this thread don't consider how a large metal box moving at speed isn't dangerous to someone not in a large metal box. Drivers often don't consider cyclists are just as exposed as a pedestrian.
Roads are paid for through general taxation so anybody can use them. Drivers pay tax for their cars, since they damage the road over time and emit pollution.
Britain was one of the main exporters of bicycles a little while ago (Brompton bikes were a big success in Asian countries) and bike usage is pretty big in Britain too, I'm just not sure you're out enough to notice it.
It is by far more annoying when somebody speeds past you on a bike on the pavement than when a cyclist is travelling on the road.

That guy got 17 months in jail for what should be considered attempted murder of reckless endangerment of life.

What the fuck is wrong with that guy?
If I went to india foolishly driving a small car and it got crushed and I got injured, then I would be at fault because the roads there are designed for elephants.
Greatest counter argument I have ever heard on Facepunch. :v:
Driving takes a lot of training
Not really. Honestly all it really takes is paying attention and not a whole lot more. The rules of the road and not driving aggressively are easy. And once you get past the initial hurdle of learning how much pressure to apply to the gas/break and how to steer without it being jerky movements, the rest is simple.
What a cunt
I hate idiots with this mentality of "I own the road"
My philosophy?
I'm in a big fucking car. If I hit that dude on a bike or that lady with the Puggle, there's a 99% chance that I'll be totally unharmed while they'll be fucked up something fierce, so I'll give them some space.

Don't take that little bit out of context. Driving takes a lot of training, and money investments, to have enough knowledge of traffic laws and handling your vehicle to gain approval for a drivers license.
People who drive cars need a license to prove that they know how to follow traffic laws and how to safely handle their vehicle, cyclists do not.
I'm not saying drivers shouldn't respect civilians and pedestrians, they ARE more vulnerable. I'm saying that I don't trust someone without a license that tells me that they understand traffic laws on the road, because they are people I don't trust will know how to share the road respectfully and in a way that doesn't endanger themselves and others around them.
If someone is driving faster than me, I drive closer to the side so they can get past. This is simple fucking decency in traffic. I do this while riding my car for other drivers, and if I rode a bike I would do this for other cylists, and if I rode a bike on the road I would do it for the motorists behind me. This is because A: You're slowing down traffic, B: Because if you fall you will be run over. You're selfishly slowing people down, and recklessly putting yourself in unnecessary danger while doing so.

I think you're at least somewhat misunderstanding me. Nowhere did I say anything about the cyclists. I simply said that driving takes a lot less training than you seem to be thinking. Driving at an actually competent level is actually stupidly easy. People just don't give a shit because they're self centered morons who think they own the road.
Surely cars are supposed to be in the middle of the road? I would imagine what you saw when 2 cars were side by side was what we call a " overtaking manoeuvre " This is where a car may go around and in front of another vehicle when safe to do so. It is a temporary state and is not permanent
No. I'm talking about motorists who treat the shoulder like it's a second lane.
You are fucking ridiculous. I hope I am never anywhere near you when cycling. You sound like a total dick.
I respect people while driving. I have never speeded past a pedestrian walking across the road or at a red light, I have never put any other driver in danger, I make way for people who want to pass me by, I have never caused any harm to cylists, I bloody blink at turns, intersections and roundabouts. I feel with this in mind, I have the goddamn right to feel that people that don't return the favor, are massive fucking disrespectful and reckless cunts who I wouldn't feel bad if they would just to happen to be smushed by a fucking bus because of their shortsighted self-centered shitty behavior.
Seriously. You don't own the road anymore than anyone else. You're vulnerable, not untouchable. Stop fucking acting like you're free to be however reckless and douchelike you want simply because drivers technically should care for you. Here's a fucking newsflash, if you act like an asshole to someone, they will likely act like an asshole in return. So fucking pay some fucking sympathy to drivers if you want drivers to give a shit about what happens to you. I care for strangers, but I don't care for people who prove themselves to be assholes.
I stop at red lights.
When riding more than one abreast we always thin out to single file when a car comes.
If I'm riding on a narrow road with no way for a car to pass in reasonable time, I will pull over and stop in a gateway to let a car pass.
I always wait in a queue rather than going up the inside.
And this makes me an areshole? So yeah I'm just going to use your logic and call all drivers aresholes too because one or two fucked up.
And FYI yes I am a full uk driving licence holder also, I know what it's like to be driving around cyclists.

People automatically assumed I'm an asshole because I drive a car rather than ride a bike, what's to stop me from doing the same about cyclists?
If you agree that a lot but not all drivers are morons, I will agree with you that a lot but not all cyclists are assholes.
Currently this thread seems to think that cyclists are saints and only people who drive cars can be disrespectful in traffic.
People automatically assumed I'm an asshole because I drive a car rather than ride a bike, what's to stop me from doing the same about cyclists?
But they don't, people assume you are an areshole when you spout crap about bike riders when a small percentage are the ones that are messing things up.
[editline]23rd May 2013[/editline]
Believe me I hate riders that do stupid stuff just as much as you, just that doesn't give you the right to tar me with the same brush.
People automatically assumed I'm an asshole because I drive a car rather than ride a bike, what's to stop me from doing the same about cyclists?
dude shit you just said you'd be okay with cyclists getting hit by a bus and dying horribly are you fucking mental
The "small percentage" idea is debatable. I'll admit that a lot of drivers I have seen are assholes, but just as many if not more of people I've met driving bikes have also been assholes.
The "small percentage" idea is debatable. I'll admit that a lot of drivers I have seen are assholes, but just as many if not more of people I've met driving bikes have been complete assholes.
Until you can cite otherwise, the idea that it's non existent to a small percentage is a lot more logical than assuming it's a high percentage.
dude shit you just said you'd be okay with cyclists getting hit by a bus and dying horribly are you fucking mental
If you are an asshole, then yes, I will shed no tear when you die.
I'll feel sympathetic to friends, I'll feel sympathetic to strangers, I won't feel sympathetic to people who only care for themselves.

Both the idea that it's a low and that it's a high percentage are assumptions, until either part gets proof of their claims it's all a matter of interpretation.

No, that's ridiculous. You're the one claiming it's a high percentage, and your anecdote isn't real evidence. I said non existent to a small percentage to humor you, in reality everything you've said is false because you haven't done anything to make it otherwise. It's not everyone else's job to prove cyclists aren't more likely to be assholes.
The "small percentage" idea is debatable. I'll admit that a lot of drivers I have seen are assholes, but just as many if not more of people I've met driving bikes have also been assholes.
Still, irrespective of the size of areshole riders, the fact that I try my best to help car drivers, and you still defautly think I'm a areshole rider, do you think that makes me feel like my kindness to drivers is appreciated? Not really, and it makes me wonder why I do it?
I mean, I pull over after a car has been behind me on a narrow country road for just 30 seconds to let a car past and get abuse hurled at me. I did something I didn't have to do in relation to the law or highway code, to please a driver, and still get stick for it. When driving down a country lane I accept there may be cyclists.
This is what creates areshole riders.

You guys are the ones making claims that drivers are more likely to be assholes than the apparently saintlike nature of every person who ever owned a bike, I returned the opinion with my own. I'm not making any more outrageous claims than you are. You're presenting your opinions of drivers based on your life experiences, I present my opinions of cyclists based on my life experiences. Both sides have made claims, no side has presented proof. So fucking stop with these hypocritical accusations.

Right back at you.
I treat other people in traffic with respect, and in return cyclists and drivers alike are still massive fucking assholes. You all assumed I'm an asshole and spam me with dumb ratings, and since it is in my nature to always return the way I am treated in the same manner, this is what you get.

FYI no one called drivers in general arseholes until you started making posts about squishing people into a paste.
[editline]23rd May 2013[/editline]
Seriously count the posts bashing drivers in general vs the posts bashing cyclists in general.

Get off your high horses, wishing never hurt anyone.
I'm the kind of person who wishes harm upon others, but that doesn't mean people are right to assume I'm the kind of person who inflicts harm.

Wishing harm and death on non law breaking people still makes you an areshole, irrespective of intent.
A person who wishes to inflict harm is more likely to do it than someone that doesn't go around wishing certain groups of people dead.
