Speculation? Go watch the PS4 reveal to know that it's all about the games, indie developers, and being social. And Sony made amendments when their servers were breached by giving out free games and fixing the security hole. Oh did I forget to mention how they also apologized and shut down access to psn to fix the hole so no more damage could be done?
You're also full on shitting yourself by saying xbox live has held up better than playstation plus.
1) A press conference means nothing
2) They gave out free games as an afterthought to cover their asses
3) How is them shutting down their servers to fix their problem a point in their favour
4) No, you're shitting yourself if you think a service that was completely trashed, leaked a tonne of credit card information, and was down for a long time to fix itself has held up better than xbox live. They're both shit, your obvious bias is ridiculous

I would get off your high horse though, not everyone has a full on obvious bias just because they disagree with you. Everybody is biased, some people just are expressing themselves and learning towards Sony as a reaction to this article. You are not better or smarter because you don't support either.
So on the one side we got the XBOX which is always on, comes with a Kinect to scan your room, maybe a similar ad-stuffed premium service you gotta pay for, and a Terminator that knows 94 ways to dissect you alive with as much pain as possible.
And on the other side there's the PS4 with none of that crap, some social feature BS, an experimental streaming service for old games, maybe the old premium service that's by consensus more reasonably an gives you free games on top, and a little fairy that'll grant you three wishes and eternal happiness on top.

If I remember correctly all that credit card information was useless considering Sony doesn't save the security code. Why is that you want to bash Sony for making it up to their userbase?
That isn't expensive, considering the PS3 was $600+ at one point.
That was partly because of the blu-ray drive.
At the time of the xbox360's and PS3's launch the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray format war was going on.
Microsoft choose to make their HD-dvd drive a plug-in external accessory, while Sony choose to make their console sport Blu-Ray out-of-the-box from the beginning.
SO they will release a cheap 360 too uh.. Hope sony does the same, so I can finally buy it + heavyrain/uncharted/sotc+icoHD. Not too interested in 360 exclusives.
what the fuck is going on on the projector screen in op's picture? if that comes up when i start up a system of ANY kind, pc, console, whatever, my brain is already completely confused. where the fuck is anything?

That's the Windows 8 Start Menu. Let's not turn this thread into a Windows 8 discussion, by the way.

Agreed. If Sony put out a similar cheap PS3, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

I don't see how me not having an obvious bias is being on a "high horse". Yes, it's rare for somebody to be 100% completely unbiased - but there's a fine line between being slightly biased and goofy amounts of biased. Defending a company that willingly spied on and invaded the homes of their customers is definitely in the latter.

I'm not bashing Sony for "making it up to their user base", I'm bashing sony for fucking up in the first place. That much should be incredibly obvious
Except if the console is always online you still can't play single player games even if their servers are down.
That's the problem.
If EA servers go down while I am clubs, I still dont play singleplayer. I do something else while I wait.

You're talking as if Sony should have used 100% hacker proof servers to store information. Yes they did fuck up for not salting shit, but not everyone is perfect.

I have bigger beef with them withdrawing OtherOS support.
Wait I just though, eventually when the new Xbox is not current gen they will probably shut the servers down for it, meaning the thing will literally become a brick.
I thought the always online DRM for game was bad but fuck, imagine getting completely getting the whole console shut down, not just them game.
"bigger beef" cut the drama it's a gaming console, everybody is a professional now, they've got class A complaints regarding compatibility of their new gaming system ... buy a computer, install linux...

Then you're forced to buy the next one.
The problem I have with things such as online services/platforms (including Steam) and especially an always online console is that there is no proper way of archiving/preserving stuff. Do you believe the is someone who has a standalone build of every single Garry's Mod version for example? And even if they did most of them would be kinda incomplete because features like Toybox are offline. In 25 years I doubt you'll be able to play any of the new Xbox games the way they were intended to be or you can't play them at all (if the always-on stuff is real). With older games you can easily get the 1.0 version from anywhere (retail stores, ebay ecetera) and their patches off the internet archives or other CD's so that's COOL
I guess I'm just going to keep my xbox and if I ever get a new console I'll make sure it's sony. It's gone Ps2, Xbox 360 now Ps4 hopefully :D
The only way this could be worse is if Microsoft brings back Milo 2.0.
Except now he grew up with a power complex and is the Xbox's Gestapo to make sure things are running smoothly.
I wouldn't doubt It at this point.
I see a console monopoly coming.
I think it's really dumb that the new xbox is going to be online only, but I think people are kind of overreacting about the whole thing, who doesn't have an active internet connection? obviously if you're reading this post right now, you do.

That isn't the problem, what happens when the internet goes out? What happens when people can't afford internet anymore? Personally, I like to play games when my internet goes out.

Who can't afford internet? It's fundamental to our world nowadays.

What about people that live in rural areas that don't have high speed internet?

They still have a connection
They still have a connection
What if they connect to the Internet via HSDPA or GPRS? those connections can be unreliable and be unavailable for long periods.
Then there are people who simply don't have Internet connections available at all times.
