New Xbox confirmed: Will be called just "Xbox", $500 (or $300 with a subscription), always-online, $

Exclusives on both consoles are mainly shit and boring.
They will never be leading multiplayer games and therefor affect my decision absolutely fuck all. (Unless DayZ gets PS4 exclusive)
I am always online so this doesnt bother me at all either. Not sure why it bothers anyone with a reasonable internet. Seems silly to me. Those that cant keep a half decent connection are better off not being in my games anyway, fucking laggers/dcers.
So once we realize the fact the exclusives are shitty and the always online isnt actually a problem at all, they seem pretty equal to me.
If anything, Xbox controllers swing me more towards the Xbox.
PS controllers are 2 lightweight and small.

So what if you have a decent connection? Some people don't, seems kinda awful to make a console that fucks over certain people

I know my internet connection is shit where I live and though I can play multiplayer games on PC without issues, the xbox 360 has always been a huge issue because for some reason it's devouring my internet connection like crazy. I seriously couldn't play any game correctly without consequent lag, either when using wifi or an ethernet cable.
I can only imagine things getting worse with that new console. Not that I ever intended to buy it anyway.
So what if you have a decent connection? Some people don't, seems kinda awful to make a console that fucks over certain people
From people with bad internet connection, true
From Microsoft POV, true, could affect sales
From my POV, dont give a fuck will not affect me whatsoever and my internet is nothing amazing 7.5dl 700k up
The sooner the day I dont have to play against third worlds that lag and warp and freeze all over the place the better
If someone buys this console and cries when they can't use it due to server issues or their own internet problems then they don't deserve sympathy. At this point the new Xbox is going to be bought only by Xbox fanboys or adults who clearly don't know any better.
Or they really like the console besides the server issues or their internet issues and still would like to have it even though it may have problems? Do you uninstall Steam when Steam messes up and crashes on you? Do the people that bought Sim City or Diablo 3 deserve no sympathy either?
Put it this way.
Whatever I get my experience is going to be exactly the same.
Play Clubs on Fifa with my mates (online)
Occasionally play BF3 (online)
Occasionally play GTA (online)
What I have heard from both so far doesnt sound like my experience is going to be any better than it currently is on my 360
Always online isn't a DRM scheme. These companies can stamp out piracy regularly with firmware and software updates. Always online is there because Activision, EA, Ubisoft, Capcom, Konami, Rockstar, Bethesda, Square Enix, Rovio, Zynga, 2K, Microsoft, The partridge and the pear tree all want to know EXACTLY what you're doing in your games at all times. If they have the metrics they can edit and adjust their future games, updates, and DLCs so it's easier to sell their product to you.
It isn't a restrictive plot to keep crap from being stolen, it's a restrictive plot to keep selling crap to you.
That's how I see it at least.

Steam can be played in offline mode though.
When it comes to Sim City or Diablo that's a much different story. Those are franchises that people have loved since they started and it's unfortunate that developers made it much more difficult for them to enjoy the newest installment of their favorite games. And there is no other way to play those games other than having to deal with the always-online DRM. That is something that people deserve sympathy over. They basically had their dedication/interest manipulated basically. A console, on the other hand, can be substituted for a different company's console especially of it functions better.

2/3 of those are games you'd want to play online.
But why would you need online to play a singleplayer game?
Guys there's this crazy thing called waiting until May 21st.
Ok...? What does their software have to do with the gaming side of things?
I'm saying everyone's taking Microsoft's shafting, and really almost every company out there is taking you in the ass. And as far as I remember Microsoft haven't really done anything especially evil to gamers. And even then, does that constitute "a real gamer"? The moniker is stupid is what I'm getting at.

What does the release of Daft Punks new album have to do with this?

You don't consider an always-online required game console to be evil?
The point I was trying to make is that gamers aren't going to buy the new Xbox if this is the case. The majority of people who will buy it are old people who don't know better or Xbox fanboys. Anyone who is a gamer is going to move on to the better gaming platform which is either going to be PC, Wii U, or PS4. That is a "real gamer." Why? Because the new Xbox isn't going to be a gaming console. It's an "entertainment" console. Simple as that.

I dont really care for singleplayer
If on the rare occasion I do play SP Skyrim, I dont go and turn off my router..
shit, I guess I'll have to watch LPs of the exclusives
but I'll wait up until Microsoft themselves announce this xbox, I desperately want to believe these rumors are totally false and that nobody is this stupid
does anyone know if the PS4 will have backwards compatibility with the PS3? can't find anything on google

Of course you wouldn't. But even if you're not connected to the internet at the time, you can still at least play the game.
Some people here think that just because you have no issues with your internet, it's fine. This is the same attitude that Adam Orth (MS's Creative Director) took when he criticized what people were saying about the "Always on" debacle.

The world doesn't revolve around you, friend. What may not be a problem for you is a problem for someone else. This is something that would hurt someone who doesn't have the privilege of living in a place where you can get a decent internet connection.

Except if the console is always online you still can't play single player games even if their servers are down.
That's the problem.
Hmm, I guess the 360 was a good choice of names seeing as how now they are coming full circle with the new one giving it the original console's name
And in the sense that sony will likely dominate this generation like with the PS2 if the always-online shit is true.
You just got to love rumors, this exploded as bad as people mentioning Half Life 3.
Basically, wait until the official announcement. If the representative says "It must be connected to the internet at all times to play games", then you can go and have a fit.

Yeah but I will purchase my phone from a provider that DOES have decent coverage. At least I can play offline for a PS4, which I will probably pick up. The ps3 was a nice little netflix, dvd, media player, shame I sold it

Wow what a cunt.
A better analogy would be, think of a car that requires permanent internet connection in order to work.
Why would Valve's always-online console do better than Microsoft's always-online console
Last I checked steam isn't always online
I certainly have never needed a persistent internet connection to use it. Sure it won't let me log in when I start up steam if I've been without internet for long enough to make it want to phone home but you are never kicked off steam if you lose a connection and you can always log into steam in offline mode if you have no connection as long as it has called home within the past couple of days or so.
You also must keep in mind steam actually makes the online-nature of the platform a service rather than a wall. I'm willing to bet money that a new online-only xbox would never do much beyond sales for their platform, especially since they still accept physical discs and need to keep prices in line with that. Steam has no such limitation and valve has proven that they can have a gaming ecosystem that is far far cheaper than anything else out there, even taking into consideration used game sales of this current generation.
You honestly think that MS's persistant online-only console, where prices are always going to be how they are now on xbox (aka always stay $60+ except for rare sales here and there), with zero capabilities to do used games and rentals (one of the big cost-saving advantages of a console) considering it requires an always-on connection, is equal to what a hypothetical steambox would be? If Valve released a steambox where it's basically big picture mode the-OS right on a mini-PC with medium/high specs, its not even on the same level as this new xbox. Astronomically good prices on games thanks to steam sales, a persistent connection is not required, all digital (and you have advantages such as pre-loading because of this, while also never having to worry about competing with retail), and the only hoops/bullshit you'll ever have to run into will be on the publisher of the game itself's discretion (i.e. you don't have to pay extra per year for internet, no ads, etc).
Well I think I am going to switch over to Playstation.
Playstation netwooork, all the wayy! WEAEOOEEOEOEOOEOEO
Why would Valve's always-online console do better than Microsoft's always-online console
Steam isn't always online, there is an offline mode. If your internet goes down while playing singleplayer games on steam, you aren't forced to stop.

I'm probably going to stick to PC now because I'm having enough fun with the ps2 and gamecube and there isn't really any upcoming exclusives that are catching my interest so far.

Is the Xbox even out yet? Is it even confirmed that it will be always online? No, not really.
And I'd say DirectX (and the MS monopoly in general) is more damaging to the consumer than always online, but apparently you're "a real gamer" even if you game on Windows.
Anyway, let's drop it, it's not like it's extremely relevant.
I think everyone is taking the always online too far. It could merely be that the console is always connected to the internet.
Holy shit what an arrogant dick. Does nobody listen to their consumers anymore?
Don't know why you guys expect backwards compatibility. That is a luxury feature that has never been a standard. The PS2 had it, and this generation the PS3 had it partially and the 360 partially. (PS3s now have it removed). Nothing else has ever had that. (Handhelds sure, but that is handheld gaming, and we're talking main consoles).
It's a nice feature, don't get me wrong, but it's a luxury feature and not needed nor critical. I care more that the PS4 and 720's development time, man power and money, is spent on hot new games and features, not playing some old crappy game I like from 2005. If I want that, I better make damn sure to actually keep old consoles. Holding onto the past HURTS the industry by wasting time and money and manpower, and it is NOT a requirement and SHOULD NOT be.
You want your old games? You know you're going to want them? KEEP YOUR CONSOLES.
I have kept every single console I own, and their games, because I KNOW I WANT TO PLAY THEM.
That should not be the responsibility of a modern 2013 console, to be able to play/emulate your old 1999 PSX games. Even if it didn't hurt the industry or development of these consoles, it still shows an over entitlement issue. Hell, it shows a lot of issues or irony/hypocrisy. But that is another argument for another time.
ISn't the PS4 going to essencially play PS1-3 games, just through PSN and not hardware?
If so, and there was some possibly way to prove that I own a the PS3 game, and I get the "digital" version on PSN on PS4, then I wouldn't mind lack of backwards compatibility at all. I positively love the convenience of backwards compatibility.
