They're custom made screens designed just for VR. As in, they have a very high pixel fill ratio (to remove the screendoor effect, the black space between pixels), they have global refresh (the pixels all refresh at the same time, instead of "scanning" like monitors), they're 90hz, and the resolution is 2160×1200 (1080×1200 per eye, there's two separate screens which can be adjusted together with the lenses to accomodate different IPDs)
So its pretty much the same as the vive specs, what advantages does the rift have?
Bundling Valkyrie with the rift is probably a bad idea. I tried playing it using the rift a year ago and it made me extremely nauseous.
My only concern right now is how long it will take between the pre-orders and the actual shipping
[editline]4th January 2016[/editline]
I mean if it starts shipping mid-summer fuck that
It'll be cool but as it is with all cool new tech, wait for revision 2 so they iron out all of the major problems.
What major problems? I think you'll find that anything major has already been ironed out, that's what the development kits were for, other than, you know, development.
I need to be a good boy this year so I can get for my birthday or christmas

It still ships Q1

Should be fixed with the consumer version, and final valkyrie, what versions did you use/play?

Shipping in Q1, so within a few months.

That's sad to hear. Usually cockpit games aren't that bad. Hardware-wise the nausea issue is pretty much solved with the consumers sets, it all depends on the software (type of game, keeping up performance, etc).
It worked really bloody well with Alien Isolation I'll give it that but it's a novelty that still gives me a headache and as i wear glasses it also actually hurts me even though it does 'cater' for specs.
I'll buy a VR headset, when it's been refined and it has lost the new gadget tax.
I'll wait for the second revision, or when the competitors bring out their VR systems. No point in blowing out so much money in VR this early.

What major problems? I think you'll find that anything major has already been ironed out, that's what the development kits were for, other than, you know, development.
Yeah what freezorg said. Technically the CV1 is revision 3. Maybe even revision 5 or 6 if you consider the prototypes that showed up at E3 and the other trade shows.

If we consider DK1, DK2, and Crescent Bay, it's revision 4.
If we consider DK1, DK2, and Crescent Bay, it's revision 4.
DK1, HD prototype, Crystal Cove prototype, DK2, Crescent Bay prototype, consumer version. Each one has several sub-revisions that nobody ever really kept track off (there's multiple revisions of the consumer version out there at selected developers).
It's safe to say this tech is very polished by now. State of the art.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Crystal Cove.
Are they likely to take the money on pre-ordering, or when it ships? I want to pre-order, but save up some of the money between pre-ordering and when it is out.
I'll wait a year and see what titles are available for it and the vive. Also price
Will wait for Vive. I don't care to support developers that encourage games to be VR-locked
Very excited to see the finished product!
Should be fixed with the consumer version, and final valkyrie, what versions did you use/play?
I played the version that was demoed at PAX East 2015. There was no clear sense of up or down and combined with having to move my head around to lock onto other ships, I started feeling very sick.
Probably going to be expensive as fuck for first gen, at least Valve and Oculus seem to be painting it that way now. Unless the Vive's new thing is just shit on a stick fantastic, I think I'll just wait for next gen so they can iron out any issues while also introducing potentially new features.
I do like how we went from "these HMDs are only going to be ~$300" to "these HMDs are probably going to be the cost of your average gaming PC."
Also, NVIDIA's statement about the viability of current VR is a little disheartening. Oculus seems to recommend at least a GTX 970, but that's probably to get things playable at the lowest settings possible it seems. Having a game run at a consistent 90 FPS at 3024 x 1680 at the highest settings is going to take some serious hardware, hardware that technically doesn't even exist yet on a consumer level.

Nobody said they'll cost $1,000
Your resolution is also way off
A GTX 970 is the target hardware and performs very well, as I can attest from experience.
[editline]4th January 2016[/editline]
Graphics in VR games are not aiming to look super detailed like traditional PC games. The limited resolution looks better with slightly simpler graphics.

His resolution is pretty accurate actually. Remember that VR games have to render to about 1.4x the screen resolution to compensate for the barrel distortion.

I dont get this either. Its seems like instead of making a ford they went straight to making a ferrari.

more like instead of making a rusty square wheel they went straight to making a functioning vehicle
Would be insane if the Rift only costs $50-150.
haha 50
People have estimated it to be around $300-400
so, around the price of a new console
I dont get this either. Its seems like instead of making a ford they went straight to making a ferrari.
Competition will do this. When oculus started there was like no competition for VR whatsoever, now they have big companies like HTC+Valve to compete with. They needed to make a great opening product to earn their place.

You're underestimating Oculus here. They probably have the largest force of engineers dedicated to VR out of all of them. The FB backing made them grow exponentially.
I also think people are overestimating how much competition drives their decision making at this stage. Right now they want everyone in VR to succeed, or there won't be a market to thrive in in the future. Each company has its own approach but similar goals.

Yeah I know they have a lot of backing now, but they didn't back when they started.
This is my point, a lot changed for them, so release strategies that worked out for them and also the consumer also changed quite a lot.
Well, I'm gonna be pre ordering it, I'll see how it is.

Average Joe often still has no idea who Oculus is, and often you still see people say stuff like that they will wait for a "real" VR headset from Sony, Samsung, or even Apple who are big, well known electronics manufacturers. They may have the engineers, but they still have a lot of work on their brand recognition.
