Average Joe often still has no idea who Oculus is, and often you still see people say stuff like that they will wait for a "real" VR headset from Sony, Samsung, or even Apple who are big, well known electronics manufacturers. They may have the engineers, but they still have a lot of work on their brand recognition.
The Oculus HMDs have been on freaking national television here. They're probably the most well known devices of the current VR generation (especially after the FB buyout), followed by mobile devices like Google Cardboard and GearVR.

Seems I'm no longer pre-ordering the Rift... I'm getting one for free (and everyone else that backed the Kickstarter for a DK1)!
Yeah, free Rifts for those that backed the kickstarter 3 years ago, pretty awesome of Oculus.

Also, list of countries the Rift will be shipping to:
United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Taiwan.
Hopefully the rift doesnt hit the 500$ mark, whats over my budget..
DK1, HD prototype, Crystal Cove prototype, DK2, Crescent Bay prototype, consumer version. Each one has several sub-revisions that nobody ever really kept track off (there's multiple revisions of the consumer version out there at selected developers).
It's safe to say this tech is very polished by now. State of the art.
A lot of tech goes through a fuck load of testing and still has major bugs.
once Consumers get it and you start hitting people with different eye angles and head shapes you're going to start having issues.

That already happened with the DK2, despite being a development kit, a huge amount of people that just wanted to get in on the VR train early got them. All sorts of people have already tried it and showed it around, just look on youtube. Lots of videos of people making their mothers and grandmas wear a DK2 and go on a virtual rollercoaster or something.
Not to say that there won't be even more improvements after the first consumer version, there will always be someone out there with eyes or head shape that are just not quite compatible with the headset. But ergonomics are already something they heavily focused on after the DK2.
Yeah what freezorg said. Technically the CV1 is revision 3. Maybe even revision 5 or 6 if you consider the prototypes that showed up at E3 and the other trade shows.
Well I meant in terms of the consumer product. The OR looks great and all, but like all things that go gold, there will always be some chinks to work out at first.
how is it gonna coast?

Japan.
Oh no. The tentacle creations will be coming sooner then I thought :dead:

I dunno about tentacles but you're already late on the whole "Japan using VR headsets for porn with anime girls" thing
Will wait for Vive. I don't care to support developers that encourage games to be VR-locked
You mean to tell me that games that are built from the ground up to be played in VR will not work in non-VR? What Nazis!
how is it gonna coast?
Guess we will find out tomorrow
You mean to tell me that games that are built from the ground up to be played in VR will not work in non-VR? What Nazis!
pretty sure he means games that are locked to one VR device, like rock band VR
I really can't decide between this one and Vive.. and I guess I won't know that until both of them are out.
But I want to be an early adopter.. VR have been my dream my whole life. I don't have all the money in the world either.. otherwise I'd just buy both.
Maybe buy the Oculus Rift, and then sell it and buy a Vive if that's better.. Or just wait and see which one is better..
If anyone wants to make me happy, please buy one for me thanks very muchas!

I'll buy it for you
just pay me first though, about the same cost + shipping as the purchase

I think waiting is prudent here to get the best experience. How much is being able to say "I was an early adopter" really worth to you apart from bragging rights?
Personally I think that both will be pretty stellar, I'm probably going to wind up getting whichever one is cheaper.
pretty sure he means games that are locked to one VR device, like rock band VR
This again? Oculus built these games from the ground-up utilizing tech that is not yet openly available, like Time Warp. It's far too early to decide on an industry wide open source spec for VR, we're in a stage where we need to figure out what works and what doesn't, which is where competition comes in. Oculus is a business and, because they built it from the ground up using their hardware and their software, it makes sense for them to focus on making the games they funded work as well as they can on their own platform, and it's not always viable to reinvent the wheel for a competitor's product just so that everyone can be included, especially when the differences are so dramatic. Oculus isn't betraying the cause, or destroying VR, they're just practicing smart business.
So are they likely to take out the money as soon as you pre-order or when it ships?
pretty sure he means games that are locked to one VR device, like rock band VR
it's still uninformed bullshit
of course games being funded by oculus are going to primarily support oculus
they didn't ban developers from working on the vive support afterwards
also consider that the vive isn't even coming out for another half a year
I'd pre-order this in a heartbeat if I knew it had a good returns policy. I'm blind in one eye and have no idea how well the VR experience will work for me.

I was actually just wondering how useful the headset would be in such a situation.
I suppose you'd get the same relative enjoyment that the rest of us would.

I think the only issue would be any 3D effects, but it's weird. When I was younger I didn't really notice my blindspot, but now it's bugging me more and more.
Maybe a bionic eye should be on the shopping list first. :v:
Interested in what the pricing will be. They are bundling it with two games (valkyrie and luckys tale) and Xbone controller right? 300-400 seems kinda reasonable when you take that into the equation. Unless both of the games badly lack content and are poor

The goal of VR isn't as much the 3D as the immersion. People who see with two eyes need two renders to get the immersive effect, because a single-render view would be less than normal. For you you'll just get a headset that does more than is useful to you.
Sounds enjoyable despite the situation.
11AM tomorrow for me (Toronto / New York time).
I will be at work with my card on the side.

the games are irrelevant to the price
EVE gets publicity and funding from oculus to replace lost sales to preorder bonuses
Lucky's Tale only exists because oculus funded it to be a launch title
neither "cost" oculus anything to add to the price
400-500 is a more likely cost, regardless... but who knows

the means by which they are included have nothing to do with the cost because the cost is a factor of hardware cost and deals with investors
i'm saying that the two games and controller don't affect pricing
obviously it is a nicer deal for the consumers, though
Yeah thats what I meant, but my wording was a bit off I guess :dog:

You can pre-order it in 14 hours basically reserving your slot, and actually pay when it ships.
