Well I guess Oculus Rift won't be the one to bring VR in to the mainstream after all, directly at least. You really kind of can't when you're charging this much and requiring a stronger computer. Hell, I'm more of an enthusiast for games and computers and shit than most people and even I'm hesitant to dip in to that. I guess it's time to get interested in the Vive or something?

They dun fucked up.
The DK2 was a massive improvement and was only 50 extra. What the hell could justify an increment of 250?
I preordered it.
I preordered it.
Can we all borrow it?
Can we all borrow it?
Yeah fuck everyone chip in $20 to buy one, we'll send it out to each person for a week
Well I'm one of those people who is going to seriously regret their order :v:

It's the price of a flagship smartphone. A nasty surprise (since a year ago they said they wanted to stay in the 200-400 price range). Still, they've got 80,000 orders in the first 40 minutes. The first batch was sold out in just 14 minutes.
Congrats to DK1 donators, you just made a shit ton of profit.

The tech is broadly the same, and where there are differences there will also be price variances (e.g. the Vive requires two base stations, which are going to cost more than the Rift's single camera). This shit ain't gonna be cheap for a while.

I'm calling it now, so many hyped people who get their vr sets will be disappointed. I had a go with the rift, and whilst it was great, the resolution wasn't. Also no one seems to mention that the image doesn't wrap around you, there's huge boarders around it. It's like playing a game whilst wearing a black scuba diving mask. You forget about it after a while but I still felt slightly deceived after trying it out. I'll definitely get a vr headset, not yet though.
$600? Yeah no thanks I'll wait for better and cheaper revisions instead of jumping into a non polished first rollout.
completely wrong the base stations are extremely cheap because they are not cameras, but a motorized laser field
But there are two of them, and the Rift's camera can't be expensive at all. I was mainly going by material cost rather than anything else.
i bet the vive's new breakthrough really was just a delay to see how much this would cost
Where did you get 80k from?
The last 5 digits of the order number have been steadily going up. Mine was around 55xxx, the guys who got in the March 28th shipment were lower than that, and people are already getting 80xxx and up. It's probably already over 100k. [editline]6th January 2016[/editline] The new preorders are shipping in May now, all the March and April rifts are sold.
Well, I've got it on preorder, I got the time wrong and I'm in the may shipment group :vs: It's a long time to wait, if the Vive's info comes out before then I can always cancel and get that if it's more impressive.
Holy shit that is a shocking price for me. Thank god I didn't jump on that VR hype train. I am totally going to wait one or two years for prices/tech to hopefully get better.
Ahhahah, $1k here, fuck off.
Well then. Fuck that. :v: With that pricetag I'm just gonna keep to my DK2 and wait til' the Vive gets a pricepoint.
i bet the vive's new breakthrough really was just a delay to see how much this would cost
They already revealed their "amazing breakthrough" It is literally just a software update that lets you see outlines of real world objects through the camera that was already on the front of the Vive headset, so you don't trip or bump into them.
The worst part is that with Facebook's money, they could have priced the Rift way lower and just pushed the Vive out of the market.
i bet the vive's new breakthrough really was just a delay to see how much this would cost
It's a camera passthrough feature.
700 euros here in Europe... Two words: Fuck that...
700 euros here in Europe... Two words: Fuck you.
disappointment sure, but genuine anger? talk about immature

Thats almost twice my budget. I would have got it for 300-350.
