Would the $600 become £400 because price conversion? I bloody hope so. But I'm gonna wait until competitors show off their stuff before actually buying.
the device is converted with no hike, BUT they have to include VAT so that's a kick in the balls
As Palmer said not so long ago, VR will first become something everyone wants before it becomes something everyone can afford. I don't see anyone complaining about how expensive a 980Ti is or how much money a 27" 144Hz 4k monitor costs because everyone who is interested in buying such things already knows why they are so expensive, and everyone who can't afford them know that they don't need to spend that much money when there are cheaper options available. Palmer said on yesterday's AmA that they shifted from making an affordable, mid-range VR headset to making a top quality, albeit expensive one because they realised other companies are starting to develop more affordable options (think Rift=GTX 980Ti/R9 Fury X, with other companies making the GTX 970/ R9 390). Did Oculus/Palmer fuck up with the "$350 ballpark" statement? Absolutely. Did they officially announce the Rift price and then suddenly double it when pre-orders started? No. Does the European VAT (or any other tax that increases the final price) suck horse dick? 100% true. Should Oculus have done something to prevent crazy shipment and VAT prices (i.e. ship from within Europe)? Yes. Are they trying to make mad profit from the Rift by selling it for $599? Considering that the manufacturing and materials seem quite expensive and that Facebook dropped $2 billion some time ago, I'd say no.
