productivity has increased waaay faster than the min wage they can
just imagine 20$ an hour scrubbing shitters can you really complain? That'd be better than many welding jobs that shitter would be so clean... well you still shouldn't eat off it, but you could if you had a gun at your head, knowing you aren't eating ass
damn living in america would suck for this exact reason doesn't help that education in america is fucking disgraceful (the standards etc) and the money there is utter shite as well
damn living in america would suck for this exact reason doesn't help that education in america is fucking disgraceful (the standards etc) and the money there is utter shite as well
I could turn this post on its head about Australian education, standard of living, AUD, etc. but it doesn't really have any substance so I can't.
I work in a supermarket in the UK and I get about $10 an hour (£6.63, plus its going up to £6.76 soon) and I love it, its a good wage for what I see as an easy job. I didn't know minimum wage in the US was so bad.
Some people in Slovakia have to live off 1,80€/hr.
yea well they eat eachother in slovakia
walmart is basically the poor man's Costco, if that makes any sense
Doesn't costco usually have cheaper prices?
damn living in america would suck for this exact reason doesn't help that education in america is fucking disgraceful (the standards etc) and the money there is utter shite as well
Lol, it ain't better anywhere else, bud. The world is shit. [editline]23rd August 2013[/editline]
Doesn't costco usually have cheaper prices?
In a relative sense, yes. You'll spend more, but you'll shop less frequently, which balances things out. You get a discount since you're buying in bulk.
Man, this would help especially if you live in expensive areas. I make $10.25 an hour , but that's due to the county regulationss
It's easy to say raise it to 10$ when you live in a state with high cost of living that makes the bump make sense. But living an a cheap midwestern state, 8 dollars is decent seeing as most minimum wage is going to high school kids still living with their parents. But fuck that, I want 10 dollars an hour.
Oh man i'd love that. I've been working at the same job for 3 years and after 4 raises, i'm only NOW making 8$/hr. I started at $7.25 and my first raise was 40 cents. After my first raise my company changed on how they administer raises and based them on how many rewards cards we sold to customers. I'm not a cashier and i don't sell products so it took them 3 more raises to make up the additional 40 cents and everyone there, even my general manager agrees that i'm one of the best workers there. As you can tell it's a very successful system. However, is our nation even financiall capable of doing this? I actualyl doubt it.
Honestly you should find a new job. I know it's easier said than done, bu my first job was 7.75 and I quit it after 3 months for a 12$/hr job and I just quit that after 2 months for a 15$/hr job. It's unthinkable for me to put in 3 years at a job where starting pay is 7.25 cause I know there's no room for improvement
America can afford to raise it to $20 if they wanted to.
This is what the minimum wage was back in 1913 before the fed took over. Obviously taking inflation into account.
This is what the minimum wage was back in 1913 before the fed took over. Obviously taking inflation into account.
The minimum wage was created in 1938...

I do think it should be raised, but imagining that 20 dollars an hour is going to be over twice as productive as 7.5 is a bit silly. Especially for non-labour positions.
It's weird for me reading things like these, as the minimum wage here is at least 17$/h. So I feel bad for all of you struggling with 7$ :(
i make 9 dollars an hour in an entry level job at a glass factory... today my coworker who had been working there longer while doing the same job i do (for about a year) asked me how much im making. when i told him, he told me he started off at 7.25 an hour. :(
Well a $10 wage in canada might sound amazing, you have to remember our tax rates too. Minimum for inexperienced workers is $9.80 an hour in Nova Scotia. But with a 15% GST tax it really only comes to about $8.33. So in reality we only make about one to two dollars more than americans do. I would love to be able to make $11.50 in american dollars an hour.
The cost of living is also higher.
We do get free health care though.

even a 10usd minimum wage is low, you guys really get fucked over in entry level jobs
Costco may be expensive to shop at, but it is definitely run great. You can easily tell the employees are happy to be working there just by their attitude. If every CEO did the same as Costco's, working at those jobs would at least be better. Instead of doing too much to get $7.50 an hour
even a 10usd minimum wage is low, you guys really get fucked over in entry level jobs
All depends on the location and job type. Here in Conroe, north of Houston, 10/hr is pretty much the standard outside of retail. It's almost impossible to get people to work for 8.50-9.50 an hour and a lot of people even consider 10 pretty cheap. The downside is everyone uses temp agencies because they're twitchy about new government healthcare regulations; so they can fire you on a dime toss. That said, they'll turn around and bump your pay up to 12-16/hr once you go permanent, usually after 2-3 months.
You americans and your minimum wages. Russia (de facto) doesn't have any :v: I once worked for $3/h and that was considered high
I imagine your cost of living is also higher.. since the Faroe islands are isolated in the north and all.
Yes, it is. The tax is pretty damn high, but we get free health care and free school (Every single school in the country.).
Starting Wage at Walmart is $12.20, but thats in Canada where MW is $10.25
