Australian Teenager Jailed For Fatal Speed Stunt

This is one of the reasons why the legal age for driving should be increased. Some people are just too immature.
Not to mention the most stupid thing you can do is recording the whole thing.

Australia has a unique justice system.
The United States employs a primarily punitive system of justice. This largely ignores the needs of the victims or the offenders and disregards recidivism rates in favor of punishment. The goal here being to prevent crime through extreme punishment. It doesn't work very well at all.
Other European and North American nations tend to lean more towards rehabilitative justice (In widely varying degrees). The goal here is to decrease recidivism rates by addressing the issues which caused criminals to be criminals in the first place. Drug rehabilitation being the most obvious, but it goes much deeper than that. Tends to do reasonably well.
Aussie land though uses restorative justice. Restorative justice is weird. Recidivism doesn't matter here, what matters here are the victim and the offender. It's complicated and I only know a little bit as the system isn't terribly widespread, but basically the goal largely seems to be making the wrong right in some capacity. The victim or their family gets the option to meet with the offender and both parties get to explain themselves face to face. From what I understand it is possible for the offender to be allowed to carry out certain actions in pursuit of making a wrong right or less wrong at the very least. Again, weird and complicated system. No idea how effective it is as it isn't used enough to properly gauge the usefulness. Australia is a bad example because they have weird laws as well as a weird legal system.
Basically the fact that the kid was in tears and was horribly sorry actually does matter for the Australian justice system. It matters for other justice systems too, but restorative justice tends to focus more on it.

I don't even know why the age was lowered to 16, it sounds pretty stupid to lower the age than to increase it.
Okay. So... I saw a long road. No Side roads. Which means the OLD couple must've been driving on his side of the road. Their fault. This is why we shouldn't let seniors on the road. They're dangerous and have a very slow reaction time.
(And in the case of me missing a side road: WHY WEREN'T THEY LOOKING FOR ON COMING TRAFIC?)
You clearly don't drive at all, and please never do.

That's funny, it seems that you have never been behind the wheel before. You have watched your parents drive?
Also, it sounds like you live in the City. I have a house in the city and I have one out in the country. I have experience driving both, out in the middle of no where like that on those roads, we usually use the passenger to help look for other cars.
Also, the hill that car went up, it is impossible to know what is on the other side, you simply just can not see. And going (a pathetic 87 mph) the kid would have seen the car and not even had time to stop, because he was too busy creaming over his speed.
Not only is this kid stupid, and deserve every bit of that sentence, he doesn't even know anything about life.
Going fast in a car doesn't make you cool, that is the problem with kids. Drive your damn car to get where you are going. No one gives a shit if it sounds like a lawn mower or you have some ridiculous fin on it.
Drive within the speed limits, drive safely, don't blast your music with your stupid speakers, because people don't drive past you and go "Wow, they must be cool they have speakers!". IT'S A FUCKING CAR. Drive it, get out, have fun doing something else.
which is why MANY people find the American legal system to be a joke. They just refuse to conform to the rest of the world, even if what we do IS better. i'd get it if we did worse... but..

Good, it also should. You are taught the difference between wrong and right as a kid. mostly, this is not preventive, but you will often have moral qualms about what you did AFTERWARDS. Most teenagers work this way and it's good to have a system that acknowledges that. At least, a second chance is more likely to be given where it's due.
this kid fucked up... But, if this is going to haunt him for those three years, then three years is almost too much. He's genuinely sorry. in this case, that doesn't cut it, but in other cases it should.
From the article he actually got six years, but is up for parole in three.
And yeah the US justice system is a joke.
I don't know how all these threads turn into bashing America, even when America isn't even involved.

What are the others in your opinion? Just interested.

You could read the last few posts and you woudn't have to post this, sounding like you have no idea what's going on.
Americas law system got bashed because it got compared to a lawsystem that was that was through out better. Also, because it's basically the equivelant of a 50 yearold father who screams at his teenager to follow orders without even earning his respect first. it's a pathetic scene where the teenager leaves the scene with the pants on.
140!
I recorded myself driving like that once, but I wasn't speeding and it was to show a friend how boring and empty my 6 hour drive was.
And yeah the US justice system is a joke.
The Australian, and in particular, Victorian legal system is a joke as well.
We have murderers, who have killed more than one person, who get a life sentence, which is 25 years.

You reckon it'll be updated soon?

Much better justice system than the US
Give the fucking kid life, god damn Australia can't get its shit together.
Giving an immature cunt who yet has to fully grow up life for manslaughter doesn`t seem right.

My point was, that this news article had nothing to do with American Law so it shouldn't have even been brought up by whoever.
P.S. I read all the posts in the thread.
87MPH is freeway speed here.... If he cant do 87 MPH safely he a dipshit. :/ I am 18, got my license the day I turned 16, and I have had a powerful muscle car since a week before I even got my license. Ive done 140+ MPH multiple times. Never even put a scratch on my car, just have to have the common sense about where to do it and when. When I do stupid shit like that I go way out in the desert atleast 20 miles from the nearest person. I even drive the road slower than normal speed to inspect it for any defects that could be dangerous to my run first. I stop and inspect my tires and car for anything dangerous. Then I let her rip.. I think the fastest I have gone was 152MPH, I had it written down somewhere but I don't know where anymore because I don't do it often. maybe 3 times in 2 years.

Yes, they should act out in spite, and vengeance. That's totally what a justice system is for right guys? :downs:
"A minimum of three years"
for killing someone? What the fuck, that's it? Put that piece of shit in jail for life.

the justice system is meant to rehabilitate but it is also meant to deter future crimes of said nature due to the severity of punishment regarding a certain crime...

and yes they should jail him for life, hes an irresponsible dumbfuck that needs to be kept away from the rest of society

Yeaaah, life in jail for an accident.
Totally reasonable.
Well I have mixed feelings about this.
He was being a reckless irresponsible twat and his actions got two people killed and he should definitely be punished, no qualms here.
However it's how badly he should be punished that's the question, the punishment he got 6 years and 3 years of parole, now that's going to haunt him and its good to see that he's truly sorry.
A part of me thinks he's going to learn his lesson and be haunted by his actions for a very VERY long time. As he should be.
The other part says keep him in there for longer and revoke all his licenses to drive any kind of vehicle and then some.
I think his punishment of 6 years and 3 on parole is wee bit light but good.

the american justice system is a system that gave up many years ago and just started beating everyone up no matter the circumstances, moral situation or the feelings involved. it's a failed justice system. It failed at being just and now it's degraded to just punishing... hard and fail.
Yeaaah, life in jail for an accident.

nah, he'll get a second chance. That was irresponsible and it had dire consequenses. what he got is enough if what we know of the emotional consequences to him are true. and i can tell you, he won't be speeding again.
America: believing the worst about anyone. Let's just give em life... because we can't execute someone for speeding into an old lady...
Rest of the world: trying to improve people who screw up and lock up assholes.
Come to think of it, the american justice system often comes across as barbaric and cruel. that is what happens to a failed attempt at "firm and strict" justice.
You're a fucking idiot if you think breaking the law with harmful, even disastrous consequences removes humanity from people. he could just as easly NOT have hit anyone and no one would have known. it was out of his hands. he was a fucking idiot for speeding, he felt first hand what happens if you screw up. but YOU'RE fucking sick for wanting his life taken away for an accident. you're one fucking low creature, you are. God fuck America, you're really too much sometimes.
While I don't think this kid should get life, as he was being a stupid teenager (You're telling me you never drove past 80MPH? We all break many laws a day, in the US at least). He shouldn't be given a light break (6 years in jail seems reasonable to me).
Do stupid shit, expect to pay for it.
He drove 87 mph.
If only he had been going a little faster, he would have gone back in time and never hit those old people.

This obviously must happen a lot in Australia:

I hope your grandmother (or anyone close to you) dies because of some idiot speeding.
[editline]03:43PM[/editline]
I hope she suffers too and takes her last gasping breath with blood gurgling out of her split throat as her smashed and broken ribs stab her lungs.
