Pure caramel is made from melted sugar; but two other approved versions to colour food products include the chemical ammonia and produce compounds shown to cause various cancers in animal studies, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) said in a statement. The group is petitioning the FDA to ban the ammonia-containing caramels, which are also used in other dark-coloured soft drinks. Leading US soft drink makers include Coca-Cola Co, PepsiCo Inc and Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. Obesity is still a greater health threat from soda, but the chemical reaction between sugar and ammonia can form carcinogens and 'still may be causing thousands of cancers in the US population,' the group said, citing animal studies conducted by government researchers at the National Institutes of Health. 'Carcinogenic colourings have no place in the food supply, especially considering that their only function is a cosmetic one,' CSPI executive director Michael Jacobson said in the statement.
http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/TechandScience/Story/STIStory_635765.html But Coca Cola is so delicious!
Damn gove'ment takin away our cancer juice! :argh:
I drink probably a gallon of soda a day, not much of a regular exerciser, and been under a lot of stressful events. My teeth are fine (never had braces in my life and no cavities in my adult teeth) and I'm so skinny you can see my ribs easily. the joys of fast metabolism.

Clear Coke looks weird and doesn't fit the taste. I doubt it'll be banned though.

If all it does is make Cola a darker color than whatever they can ban it. They could probably find something else to color it with, but it's not like it matters it'd still taste the same.
i want the freedom to have cancer
Wow so the only thing making it cancerous is the coloring? I wouldn't mind drinking a clear soda if it meant I wouldn't get cancer.
you must be really unhealthy being skinny =/= automatically healthy
I had a physical about four months ago and there were no significant health problems with me, I'm as confused as you are.
It's ok because coke is shit.
I had a physical about four months ago and there were no significant health problems with me, I'm as confused as you are.
Did they take your blood sugar and do other internal tests or did you just step on a scale and then run on a treadmill for a while
US becomes a nanny state
US becomes a nanny state
Yes it's only a nanny state that bans companies from using cancer-causing ingredients
Did they take your blood sugar and do other internal tests or did you just step on a scale and then run on a treadmill for a while
Had a blood check about a year ago or so, and my cholesterol etc. were all normal.
Oh dear,so I am guessing my Cherry Coke a day doesn't keep the doctor away?
Had a blood check about a year ago or so, and my cholesterol etc. were all normal.
drinking a fucking gallon of soft drinks a day will give you a fuckload of kidney stones in the future enjoy.
US becomes a nanny state
I'm usually against banning certain things in foods, but that's fatty foods, etc. Compounds containing cancer causing chemicals are kind of different. [editline]16th February 2011[/editline]
It's ok because coke is shit.
You best start running.
there might be something potentially hazardous in my diabetes water well that simply won't do
If you look at the study in terms of what the mice got, in terms of causing any effect, a human being would have to drink more than 1,000 sodas a day."
Nothing to see here.
Apparently the amount necessary to cause cancer in a human is incredibly high. As in gallons of soda a day.
Well then they need to calm the fuck down. Even water is lethal if you drink that much at once.
You guys, my uncle drank a lot of water he got cancer. WATER CAUSES CANCER GUYS!!!
EVERYTHING contains cancer. Just pick which causes less cancer and deal with it.
that's actually a pretty low threshold for toxicity compared to a lot of stuff that has been banned it's not even a flavor, it's just a coloring additive
You guys, my uncle drank a lot of water he got cancer. WATER CAUSES CANCER GUYS!!!
Breathing causes cancer, too.
EVERYTHING contains cancer. It's not true and beliving it is just symptomatic of spending a lot of time listening to a sensationalist media. [editline]16th February 2011[/editline] basically knowing what is and isn't healthy and what does and doesn't cause cancer is really easy if you just ignore what your tv says on the matter. it has no idea what it is talking about because it is populated by saccharine morning-talk shows and oprah-lites whose dedication to eating healthy only exists to the extent of not eating things that are outright deadly and latching desperately on to whatever FAT BURNING GREEN TEA YOGURT SUPPLEMENT will cause them to get that body that they pray for without expending any effort at all. the state of discussion about health in america is basically static, being at once both black and white and both real and immaterial, while actually conveying no genuine information or knowledge about anything ever for ever and ever amen
Big deal, we all have bought and used products that were proven safe during animal studies, but are actually quite toxic to us
