Its where two plates collide. western California is not on the north american plate, but is in fact on the Pacific plate. Most of those aftershocks are probably just other tiny earthquakes.

Earthquake is happening all around.
I have family there so as soon as i saw the news i stormed down and told my mom about it. I'm so glad there where no injuries.
