England barely gives a shit about religion. Not like it'd make a difference anyway.
I'm pretty sure Norway's the same
Norway, hopefully this will lead to more countries separating Religion and Senate.
Hell no, they helped block some of the dumb anti welfare legislation in the house of lords.
What has state religion got to do with bicameral parliament? There are only 26 spiritual peers who could (and should) be done away with easily. The UK should follow Norway's example.
Oh come on, the church was practically what christmas is now, no one takes it seriously and just keeps it around because hell it's tradition.
christmas is a stolen holiday anyways
Hopefully the rest of the world will follow Norway's shining example. Fucking bravo! [editline]15th May 2012[/editline]
England barely gives a shit about religion. Not like it'd make a difference anyway.
The census was unreliable as fuck, Richard Dawkins did a study on those who noted 'Christian' as their religion. A lot of them only wrote down that because of their family/habit/some other bullshit reason. I can't explain it, here:
Kind of sad to see 1000 years of tradition to disappear, but if it was a burden on parliament I see why.
This is the thing everyone tries to counter me with when I said I was against a state church. There will still be tradition as long as the same people are there. It's not like they'd go out and burn down all churches and ban the religion.
Damnit Norway, stop being so awesome or else I'll have to immigrate your ass. >:(

Well, no laws should ever be based on just tradition. Which is why I think it's great that they're separating religion from the government. Also, I REALLY would like to see the Monarchy go in my country. It's just wasted taxpayer money on useless celebrity bullshit.
What is so "winner" about this exactly. I'm all for secularism but...
but what? you didn't finish your sentence.
-snip- Wonderfully useless pageking
They are not a waste of money, leave them alone
they kind of are don't reply with that tourism revenue argument; if they had public funding cut off they still have enough lying around to live extremely comfortable lifestyles if they invest it properly, and their celebrity moneymaking status wouldn't go away.
they kind of are
We get money off their estates which pays it off.
Wow Norway is over... First they get as many people to immigrate as possible, now ruin thousands of years of history and traditions. Worst part is you guys are all applauding it, lol
Ah good, I dislike the practice of state religions. It's discriminatory in nature and quite outdated. I don't care if someone chooses to worship a god, so long as they keep it to themselves like, say, masturbation. Most people don't want to see you jacking off in public, but nobody really cares if you jack off in your bedroom.
Wow Norway is over... First they get as many people to immigrate as possible, now ruin thousands of years of history and traditions. Worst part is you guys are all applauding it, lol
Tell me, What traditions have been ruined?
Wow Norway is over... First they get as many people to immigrate as possible, now ruin thousands of years of history and traditions. Worst part is you guys are all applauding it, lol
It's not really that different than when the Christians invaded Norway and got rid of paganism. In fact that was worse because they got rid of tens of thousands of years of tradition if we go all the way back to the Indo-Aryans.

Worst part is you guys are all applauding it, lol
What the Christians did to Norway in the old days was far worse than this, like Taepodong-2 said they destroyed thousands and thousands of years of tradition, to compare it to this is rather small seeing as their not banning and destroying Christianity like the Christians did to paganism, they're simply removing it as their national religion. People are still free to practice it
My Facebook is filled with people writing hate statuses against foreigners, claiming it's their fault that this happened
Well, no laws should ever be based on just tradition. Which is why I think it's great that they're separating religion from the government. Mostly focused on tourism or more benign national shit.
now the rest of the world will follow, soon enough.
Czech Republic is 100% secular (like, for real) for decades now, because, you know, communists. The Church is even still struggling to have the ownership of things that got confiscated when communists nationalized everything and the state is still like "uh, yeah, sure, I guess we should" and like half of the public thinks they should get nothing. It's not like Norway is now some mecca of atheism.
This is kind of sad, in some way. Then again, I find it sad when anything fades out of existence.
We must put a stop to these jesus hating commies before it is too late!
It's not like Norway is now some mecca of atheism.
Have you not seen our big rock?
Uh, what exactly did the churches own, other than churches? Clinics?
Here in Norway they own a charity called "Norwegian Church Aid" with goal
to save and protect lives and develop sustainable living conditions for the world's poorest and most vulnerable people, regardless of gender, political belief, religion or ethnic origin.
Luckily they are purely charitable, there's no missionary or converting involved in this.

Surely the church organizers could just run it without having it tied to the church?
I hope we will go back someday to the old Norse religion..
My great great great grandfather, who was the father of a violinist in the Norwegian royal band, had a necklace with a Mjolnir instead of a cross on it. Unfortunately, his son did not take the necklace with him to the United States, but he did fight in the civil war at the very end of the war, so he's still cool.
