Holy shit both sides are overreacting insanely hard. You guys who think that a lot of feminism stuff these days can just be boiled down to "waah everything offends me I'm so triggered right now that shirt is RAPING ME" a la Tumblr are completely falling for trolls. A while ago, people noticed that there were some people on Tumblr who were more than a little overly aggressive with feminism, trigger warnings and the like, and they started to parody them and act super offended about everything. Then, other people came along and believed them, and started making even more ridiculous parodies of feminism, and now people apparently actually think that shit like "omg u triggered me with that shirt I'm literally being raped right now kill all men etc etc" is actually commonly believed
It's not. People aren't threatening to burn down his house or anything, they're just saying that wearing a shirt like that (which you have to admit is pretty unprofessional) might make people uncomfortable to be around, which is perfectly reasonable. Sure, this massive campaign may be a bit much for a shirt, but it's nowhere near as big as you guys are blowing it up to be. It's not like the people who tweeted at him went in saying "hehhehe I'm going to say that little things like the half naked women on his shirt are unprofessional and make me feel somewhat uncomfortable to be around, I hope he'll burst into tears about it, I fucking hate men hahhahaha". No, they just mean that him taking a simple action like changing his shirt (which he probably didn't see as a problem in the first place, no big deal) would help put people around him at ease and take no effort at all. Both parties would then move on with their lives without giving it a second thought.
And also, just because he did a super amazing awesome thing doesn't mean he's exempt from criticism. You can congratulate someone and hold them in high regard while still questioning some things about them and offering your point of view on said things
You could have just said "straw feminist" instead of that explanation: it would have been just as misinformed but in a lot less words.

That shirt is better described as sexual than sexist.
If it was sexist it would say like "Women are only good for fucking" or something like that.

he's a bearded tattooed weird dude who helped land a fucking spacecraft id also cry in his position when people completely fucking ignore my achievements

Doesn't change that this new breed of radfems are extremely against anything that combines women and sexuality, just look at the shit bayonetta, and to a lesser extent skullgirls, both games having extremely strong women that(in the case of bayo and part of the skullgirls lineup) revels in their sexuality. And like with this case and skullgirls, them not giving a shit that (In skullgirls case) it was made by a woman (The animator is a woman and was given pretty much free reign). Even going as far as calling the women gender traitors(Which really reminds me of neo-nazi's calling people race traitors by the way). And hell, both bayo's VA and all the VA's in skullgirls loved their roles.
It's also a huge insult to assume that gay and lesbian people don't exist, saying it's just pandering to "white cis male fat nerds"

I haven't followed any of that drama at all and have no idea what any of that means, and whatever drama/complaints come out of video game communities (which, let's be honest, already have a stellar reputation of making massive mountains out of tiny molehills anyway, see EA winning that Worst Company of the Year award 2 years straight over various actually manipulative banks and cable companies) has absolutely no bearing on this whatsoever.
And where did you get the idea that feminists don't think gay and lesbian people don't exist? That literally goes against major feminist ideals that focus on personal empowerment and choice. Does it mean that all feminists are awesome and accepting people? No, but it's absolutely ridiculous to generalize that feminists as a whole don't believe in gay people

I honestly doubt they specifically set out to make him cry when they pointed out his shirt was somewhat unprofessional

I find it amusing that the tweet in the screenshot in the OP suggests that women aren't welcome in the science industry (due to this shirt..) yet a lot of the people who worked on this probe are women.

Is being bisexual being sexist right now?
Being a homosexual man is, yes. Just look at the "gay sexism" tag on Tumblr. Gay men embody the patriarchy because they hate women so much they'd rather fuck their own gender, apparently.

"That's not the kind of guy I want to have to work with" is a perfectly valid response to that shirt. Putting that shirt on before work on a day where you know there's going to be television crews everywhere shows an immense amount of social obliviousness.

Considering the guy ended up being asked by a news source like the BBC to deliver an apology, yes, it's reasonable to assume that that's actually how mad they are.

Ignore my post, I didn't see your second half so I misunderstood you completely, entirely my fault, sorry.
No, not really. I think its insane that we as people not only judge others by first uneducated appearances but then have people like you justify it.

There's judging someone based on appearance, and then there's judging someone based on what they made an active choice to wear.
It doesn't even matter if the shirt is actually sexist or not, it's fucking embarrassing and I have to question why someone so clearly stupid is operating spacecraft. I'd be saying the same thing if he was wearing a shirt for some stupid grindcore band or whatever - if you're going to be on international television you don't wear something that you know is going to alienate people.

Why not just relax and stop judging other people?

Okay, yes, he's allowed to be criticized for the shirt. It's a fair thing to say the shirt was unprofessional, cuz it is. If you actually read the article though, that wasn't all that was being said. He was being branded every bad name you can think, and he was being directly blamed for women not wanting to join the scientific field, and that he was misogynist.
No, I doubt the people who raised a fuss about it were doing it with the intent to make him cry, but i highly doubt he was wearing it to offend anyone either. The problem here is that a big enough deal was made about it that this story is getting more press and more recognition than the very Rosetta Project. The BBC, a giant news source, has made an article about this, something which is really a tiny, insignificant detail in comparison.
Don't you find that a little fucked up?

This sums up the state of media and people today. We landed a probe on to a comet, but let's focus on some guys t-shirt.
This sums up the state of media and people today. We landed a probe on to a comet, but let's focus on some guys t-shirt.
The media has been talking about the landing constantly. The shirt either gets a passing mention or a separate article, relax.
I read this article earlier today, and I just went away disgusted by the whole thing. They're basically bullying this guy, I mean The Verge article has the tag "Ugly bowling shirts" and "Men who lack perspective about what's happening in the world" - you could maybe argue about the latter, but the former makes the whole thing come off as a joke; were they just laughing while writing this article that was going to totally ruin a guy's week? Like "Lol let's put "Ugly bowling shirts" as a tag then we'll come off as a serious voice in the fight for equality!".
Anyway, I actually wrote the author a rather lengthy email, explaining why I think his article was disrespectful. He's probably not gonna read it, but I suggest you voice your complaints to the verge -- if they get enough complaints, maybe they'll even make an apology to the guy (as they should).
I don't know how many sites went on about this, I just read it on the verge.
We truly life in the "age of being offended".
Dutch traditions are getting butchered because of people getting offended, games are under attack because people are getting offended, great achievements in human history get watered down because of a t-shirt that offends people, transgender people are getting offended by bathrooms.
What an age to be alive.
The shirt doesn't overshadow his accomplishments and his accomplishments don't overshadow his shirt.
Here, I have no ill with you but I'll make this blunt.
I think real stupidity is not only questioning the intelligence and capability of someone else, but putting it in the most toxic insulting way.
"I have to question why someone so clearly stupid is operating spacecraft".
Your words, not mine. He made a mistake and that's that. People insulting and fighting and making a big stink over a grown man wearing a stupid T-shirt is what is stupid here.
what isn't sexist now a days
