shit they don't even have any metal concerts around where I live, I have to drive like 100 miles to see anything...

It's not particularily easy to fake illness. A doctor needs to confirm that you are ill before you get disability benefits (handikappsersättning). I'd imagine some sort of psychologist confirmed that the man in OP was deeply obsessed with metal.
