We should try to avoid contact with extraterrestrial life until the majority of human beings are able to deal with the fact that we are not the only living things in the universe.
Now, whether we've made contact or not by means of secret government meetings and we don't know about it, that's another good question...
I think first contact would go horribly if it was physical. Contact should remain strictly virtual until we learn enough about each other's cultures to not interpret innocent things as acts of war.
If they learned about are culture they would call us a leach of the world and kill us
you do realize that any spacefaring civilization would've had to exploit its world many times what we have to get here with weapons sizable enough to destroy a planet, right?
If they learned about are culture they would call us a leach of the world and kill us
Serious business.
Even if we do pick up a signal there's an absolutely minuscule chance of it being in any way whatsoever interpretable. For all we know the closest alien life could have no way to understand light (sight) or communications through the manipulation of vibrations (Sound) :smith: Anything about them could be something completely unimaginable perhaps even invisible to us. There are colours we will never see :smithicide:

I'm sure the same could be said about higher-dimensional beings that are sure to exist given all the time certain species have had to evolve.
are you an idiot?
I was saying that things like fashion and stuff like that would seem stupid to them

Let's not get off-topic shall we...
Fashion doesn't necessary affect everyone.
Yea but we spend resources on such a useless thing also the aliens way of government (or something like it) would make ares look horrible.
:irony:
Mine had a point to it by saying how bad are system and culture would look to them when looking at there own
Even if contact was made with aliens, the chances of our two races would literally be a million to one chance of having anything in common. We can't even begin to comprehend how different they are to use. They could be colossal space-squids with kilometer long tentacles. Even if an alien race developed in a way similar to humans, there is still a massive chance that wouldn't be the dominant species on their world. So realistically, humans will probably never find a race we can become friends or even communicate properly with.
Regardless, we'd be odd. I think fashion is pretty low down on the list of odd things. Unless it would be really high up because they've never conceived such a ridiculous idea or their entire society is based around something trivial like that and we seem like backwards retards in that aspect to them. Also what Dejarie said.
ITT: people pretending they know things about aliens
ITT: people pretending they know things about aliens
We are using educated guesses
Actually it's knowing we know absolutely nothing whatsoever and can't :eng101:

Taking that into consideration, us humans are a measly 1-3% different in our DNA structure to rats and chimpanzees. So the only difference between their poo flinging and our ability to put men in space is around 2% DNA difference. Now imagine the aliens we try and contact are say, 2% different from us, as we are to the chimpanzee. Just that small difference alone would be baffling to understand, but I doubt it would necessarily be unimaginably different from us.

Scientist, not scientists. Give us a reason to believe he is credible.
I came expecting Badage Boys I shat bricks.
ITT: people pretending they know things about aliens
To be quite truthful, most of what I'm saying is based off of legitimate claims made my scientists (e.g.: neil degrasse tyson, carl sagan, michio kaku, to name a few...) Other things are based off of what I've seen in interviews with reputable people claiming they've received knowledge (like what I'm talking about, and a lot more) from benevolent races whom they've encountered in abduction-esque circumstances. To be precise I mentioned his name earlier in the thread if you're interested.
We're getting more signals from the alien planet... Yes... yes it looks like they're projecting images of their homeworld to us through the vastness of space! It might have been a load of shit but I've read in a number of places that one of Hitler's big rallies was the first thing ever to be broadcast with enough power to be sent into space. There was some weird as fuck film where the first contact was having their messages sent back to them and they're all OH SHIT when they see they're watching television footage of Hitler ranting at Nuremberg.
