I'm thinking, if anything, he's going to cite health reasons. He is 86 if he was instated at 78.

Source has been updated and he says (in a nut shell) its because he's too old.

Next pope is gay, calling it now!
Well, we can at least hope for a less-bad pope. Someone like John Paul II. At least he wasn't a nazi who openly wished AIDS upon Africans and death to homosexuals and such.
There's always hope, that's true.
Maybe they might realize they are getting fucked up and they need to get progressive and adapt or slowly die out.

I'm no fan of this pope but the Nazi stuff is so sensationalist.
He was part of the Hitler youth, like almost every kid during the Nazi reign was since it was made compulsory. Not everyone who was part of the Hitler youth was a life long Nazi.
Next pope is gay, calling it now!
If he's going to be gay then the other part would be true too - it would be the end of the catholic church as it was.
Something actually decent could flourish from there. Heh.

Doesn't change the fact that he openly wanted Africans to not use condoms to avoid AIDS.
Has any Pope ever resigned before?
A few days after that kickstarter to build the Death Star, he steps down. A coincidence? I think not...
He could just not want to be Pope anymore. I know it's a stretch, but it's possible. It's gotta be an exhausting job.
Maybe he got involved in a sex scandal?
It's the Vatican, there's no ''maybe'' about it.
Doesn't change the fact that he openly wanted Africans to not use condoms to avoid AIDS.
I'm sure that's been the stance of the Catholic Church long before Benedict got in
Has any Pope ever resigned before?
Pope Benedict IX, Pope Gregory VI, Pope Celestine V and Pope Gregory XII

Because for some reason, the Church still lives in the illusion that people without condoms won't fuck.
It's something the church doesn't understand and you people won't understand about the church.
Church sees the condoms not as something bad because it's condoms, but because it means carefree sex. They want people to be forced to deal with the threats of unprotected sex, and thus have less of it.
They don't say no to condoms because "no, go fuck without condoms" but because "no, don't fuck if you don't want to produce babays", and fail to understand people will fuck regardless, just more dangerously.

Some, yeah, but not in the "modern history".
The last pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415. He did so to end a civil war within the church in which more than one man claimed to be pope.
B-but Vader can't do this by himself!

I thought the reasoning was this

Okay, CNN added more, and his actual statement
Rome (CNN) -- Pope Benedict XVI will resign on February 28, his spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told CNN Monday.
The 85-year-old pope is resigning "because of advanced age," Benedict told the cardinals of the Catholic Church on Monday.

"Strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me," the pope told the cardinals, according to the Vatican.
The last pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415. He did so to end a civil war within the church in which more than one man claimed to be pope.
Benedict, the 265th pope, is the sixth German to serve as pope and the first since the 11th century. He became pope in 2005.
He has led church after the third-longest papacy in church history and during a time in which the church is declining in his native Europe but expanding in Africa and Latin America.
Benedict's time as pope has been marked with a series of scandals and controversies, including hundreds of new allegations of sexual abuse by priests.
You underestimate the power of the dark side...
Next pope is OPENLY gay, calling it now!
Fixed, considering all the choir boy business going on in the catholic church.

That's bullshit fed to the dumber masses.
Sex is one of the strongest physical stimuli. It has undeniable effect on psyche of people. It's a big motivation.
Church "monopolizes" and controls sex to control it's masses.
They got the people, quite literally, by the balls.
So, is it the end of the world?
So, is it the end of the world?
Yes.
Another one.
Start boning.
And then another close-minded ignorant and regressive fool will replace him.

Isn't advanced age pretty much a requirement to be pope :v:

Right. Whatever your reasoning, however, it is quite nasty of you to tell poor people not to use condoms when they're quite likely to catch a deadly disease from it. Fix AIDS and poverty first, then 'fix' sex.

Yeah, as I said, over last 600 years, all popes DIED in the function.
This one, from papal perspective, chickened out. (Not to personally blame him at all, I would never put up with that shit, but it's simply how it's perceived.)
It's quite possible somebody put him under pressure, because let me stress again this is NOT normal for a pope.
We will see what comes out of this.

You don't have to tell me, I wouldn't defend their reasoning as right for a single second.
If you ask me personally, I say everyone should bone as much they wish, just as safely as possible.
My point is that Church's intent isn't malicious, it's just stupid.
Don't attribute to malice what's to be attributed to stupidity, etc etc.

I'll tell you who the next pope's gonna be (Italians will get this over most people)

I mean he's a pedo too, he thinks he's godlike... seems right no?
Probably saw how John Paul II ended up and didn't want any of that
