Yeah, as I said, over last 600 years, all popes DIED in the function.
This one, from papal perspective, chickened out. (Not to personally blame him at all, I would never put up with that shit, but it's simply how it's perceived.)
It's quite possible somebody put him under pressure, because let me stress again this is NOT normal for a pope.
We will see what comes out of this.

You don't have to tell me, I wouldn't defend their reasoning as right for a single second.
If you ask me personally, I say everyone should bone as much they wish, just as safely as possible.
My point is that Church's intent isn't malicious, it's just stupid.
Don't attribute to malice what's to be attributed to stupidity, etc etc.
i disagree i feel the catholic church is a genuinely malicious and evil organization that truly needs to cease existing
i disagree i feel the catholic church is a genuinely malicious and evil organization that truly needs to cease existing
I think that, while believe the church has many good people, it's probably true the very best way would be to abolish it entirely and let the people build something better, hopefully.
whoa what the fuck
this is something big
it's only as big as you care about it
to me this whole ordeal is for the best
Now, to make sure no other pope goes to 'office'
I think that, while believe the church has many good people, it's probably true the very best way would be to abolish it entirely and let the people build something better, hopefully.
It's too fatalistic and fantastic to presume that the Church has literally just become an evil entity that must be disbanded.
It's too fatalistic and fantastic to presume that the Church has literally just become an evil entity that must be disbanded.
It's not like it's any of our business to decide how it WILL be.
It's more of that I am afraid it would be the easiest way. Only time will tell.
Well, we can at least hope for a less-bad pope. Someone like John Paul II. At least he wasn't a nazi who openly wished AIDS upon Africans and death to homosexuals and such.
Fuck that "death to homosexuals" shit, John Paul was better because he was a Harlem Globetrotter.
Being a good pope isn't a gradient, it's decided by the binary "Are you a Harlem Globetrotter?"
No, the easiest way would be the Church reforming itself a la Vatican II. It's not going to disappear anytime soon no matter how hard you pray
It's too fatalistic and fantastic to presume that the Church has literally just become an evil entity that must be disbanded.
it's fatalistic and fantastic to presume that an entity that basically since it's conception has been used to gain wealth, political power, to curb intellectualism, to control the poor and to basically repress any minority group you're at odds with is evil? an entity that collaborated with fascists and covered it up, an entity that even today actively helps child-molesters to escape justice.
I hope someon less traditional gets elected.
the last time a pope resigned was because a bunch of guys tried to be pope and they all started excommunicating each other and shit got sitcom-level wacky
That's bullshit fed to the dumber masses.
Sex is one of the strongest physical stimuli. It has undeniable effect on psyche of people. It's a big motivation.
Church "monopolizes" and controls sex to control it's masses.
They got the people, quite literally, by the balls.
What, you mean the church makes people use officially sanctioned brothels?
I hope someon less traditional gets elected.
Wouldn't it be amazing if, by some near impossible chance, a pro-rights-for-everything/everyone pope was elected?

A portuguese cardinal was to become pope. He got rejected because he smokes.
Hopefully, thats the worst thing he's ever done.

According to a Dutch article, the resignation of the pope now probably has similar reasons. Apparently there's a powerstruggle going on in the Vatican, and the pope wasn't able to handle it any longer.
I am not sure how many voices African bishops have but they are known to be the hardliners.

Cardinal Peter Turkson 5 Facts About the Potential First Black Pope
As Pope Benedict XVI said on Monday that he would resign on Feb. 28, citing poor health, speculation is already mounting about his potential replacement. And Cardinal Peter Turkson, the current president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, is rumored to be a potential option. Here are five facts about the Vatican's first potential black pope:
1. The First Black Pope:

Turkson has said that "if God would wish to see a black man also as pope, thanks be to God." The Catholic Church chronicler Rocco Palmo called Turkson the lone Scripture scholar in the Pope's "Senate" and believes that his status as a potential "papabile" has been elevated due to his appointment as spokesman for Second Synod for Africa in 2009.
2. From Ghana to New York:

Turkson was born in Wassaw Nsuta in Western Ghana. He studied at St. Teresa's Seminary in the village of Amisano and Pedu before attending St. Anthony-on-Hudson Seminary in Rensselaer, New York, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in theology. He was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop John Amissah on 20 July 1975.
3. The Road to Rome:

On October 1992, Turkson was appointed Archbishop of Cape Coast by Pope John Paul II. And created him Cardinal-Priest of S. Liborio in his last consistory of October 2003. Turkson is the first Ghanaian cardinal, and was one of the cardinal electors who participated in the 2005 papal conclave, which selected Pope Benedict XVI.
4. Condoms:

In 2009, Turkson reaffirmed the Catholic social teaching on contraception, in regards to statements made by Pope Benedict XVI that condoms were not a solution to Africa's AIDS crisis. He didn't rule out condoms in all circumstances suggesting they could be useful in the situation of a married, faithful couple where one partner is infected.
5. Turkson, Obama and Annan:

At a 2009 news conference, Turkson was asked whether he thought the time was right for a black Pope, especially in light of President Barack Obama's 2008 election. "Why not?" Turkson replied. He argued that every man who agrees to be ordained a priest has to be willing to be a Pope, and is given training along the way as bishop and cardinal. 'All of that is part of the package.' He also noted that former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan was from Ghana.

So yeah, not a big huzzah, really.

If you're a conspiracy nut and follow the Prophecy of the Popes, yes (for Rome, at least).
Wow! This is amazing :) I'm actually gonna be in Rome when they figure out the new pope.

Thing is the article pretty much just copies wiki and wiki says little more about him

Cardinal Turkson has said that "if God would wish to see a black man also as pope, thanks be to God".[13] The Catholic Church chronicler Rocco Palmo called Turkson the lone Scripture scholar in the Pope's "Senate" and believes that his status as a potential "papabile" has been elevated due to his appointment as spokesman for Second Synod for Africa in 2009.[14]
HIV/AIDS and condoms
In 2009, he reaffirmed the Catholic social teaching on contraception, in regards to statements made by Pope Benedict XVI that condoms were not a solution to Africa’s AIDS crisis and were taken out of context by the media.[15] Turkson did not rule out condoms in all circumstances suggesting they could be useful in the situation of a married, faithful couple where one partner is infected; although he warns that, as the quality of condoms in Africa is poor, their use could engender false confidence. He said abstinence, fidelity, and refraining from sex if infected were the key to fighting the epidemic. He also believes that the money being spent on condoms would be better spent providing anti-retroviral drugs to those already infected.[16][17][18]
Reform of the international financial system
In response to the global economic crisis started in 2008, Cardinal Turkson together with bishop Mario Toso elaborated a proposal to reform the international financial system by creating a Global Public Authority and a Global Bank that consider the interest of all developing countries. The document of 40 pages was officially presented in October 2011 and criticizes the actual structure of International Monetary Fund and other institutions.[19]
So yeah.
Maybe hes stepping down so he can spend more time with the kids.
