Found a quote in a CNN article "Strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me." So I guess even old people want to retire?
Pretty sure all old people want to retire.
good he's ugly, doesn't even look like a pope John Paul II 4 lyfe
Has a pope ever resigned before?
Has a pope ever resigned before?
Yes. Three. The first Pope recognized by the Church as having resigned by free will is Saint Clement I, who led the early Christian Church in the First Century. In 1294, Celestine V was chosen after a conclave that lasted three years. However, just six months into his pontificate he announced his intention to resign because he considered himself unsuitable for the position. His resignation gave way to the Canon Law which allows Popes to resign at free will. The third Pope to announce his intention to leave the Chair of Peter was Gregory XII in 1415. His resignation is seen as a sacrificial gesture to heal the Great Western Schism at the time.
Pretty sure all old people want to retire.
depends on what you mean by retire. my grandma's boyfriend "retired" by quitting his job as a mechanic to build his own shop and build engines.
Fuck all these casuals, this is my bet for the next pope
I'll go one better
depends on what you mean by retire. my grandma's boyfriend "retired" by quitting his job as a mechanic to build his own shop and build engines.
So what you're saying is that Pope Benedict has "retired" to go found his own Catholic church. With blackjack. And hookers.
At least he practices what he preaches, for he withdraws early.
One crazy bit of speculation, its possible he is going a bit senile in his old age. The mention of not having a fit mind (or something to that degree) is a bit weird. I was also once told that you only see at most two popes in your lifetime, but at this rate they could be changing frequently. None of the cardinals seem to be young any more.
One of the most peaceful people on the planet.

Poor guy probably wants to enjoy life at some point.
I'd assume there wasn't a female pope yet. I can't see it happening for a while, we'll definitely have had a wide variety of presidents before a female pope imo.
Yep you're right http://www.cracked.com/article_20258_6-famous-things-from-history-that-didnt-actually-exist_p2.html
Why is this so downplayed? This should be on the news literally everywhere.
Blame the damn Kardashians and the Golden Globes.
Everybody popes.
Fuck all these casuals, this is my bet for the next pope
does he have to poop? [editline]11th February 2013[/editline] someone give him a fucking toilet for gods sake!
we should reelect ron paul II
the last time a pope resigned was because a bunch of guys tried to be pope and they all started excommunicating each other and shit got sitcom-level wacky
tbh i'd watch that
The illuminate bribed him to make a new world order.
tbh i'd watch that
just call it "Pope Wars" and put it on A&E
Poor guy probably wants to enjoy life at some point.
I'd be enjoying life if I was the Pope. I mean, c'mon, look at that fucking hat.
UPDATE: The pope suddenly changed his mind about the whole thing: http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/borowitzreport/2013/02/popes-decision-to-come-out-of-retirement-stirs-controversy.html#ixzz2KdFWZxiT He didn't want to give up his Twitter followers.
oh if only it were true
Well, we can at least hope for a less-bad pope. Someone like John Paul II. At least he wasn't a nazi who openly wished AIDS upon Africans and death to homosexuals and such.
I hate to defend the Catholic church, but a little while ago Pope Benedict did say that using condoms was OK only to prevent the spread of STDs. For some reason, that seems to have floated over a lot of people's heads.

The Pope is resigning because he lacks the strength to do the job. In other words, an alter boy fought him off.
so he lacks the strength to continue the job but now he must live in solitude in the vatican for the rest of his life for abdicating. um im a bit confused.
