That is true, never said it wasn't, all that I am saying is that the kid still deserves compassion. He deserves punishment, of course, but also deserves compassion as this was an accident.
both parties in this altercation are quite unlucky

Whether or not he should be given compassion is up to each individual. I, for one, will not give him any.

One more than the other.
he killed a man in cold blood
Look up the difference between manslaughter and murder. This was voluntary manslaughter.

This was not an accident. He did not "accidentally" punch the guy. What this was is a punch with worst case scenario results.
Different countries have different laws but usually there's more then one "type" of homicide. This one fits in the homicide without intent category.

a quick look at US murder definitions tells us that this is second degree murder - he had no reason to be so angry
Hope he gets life.
Hope he gets life.
I don't - he'll come out far more a murderer than he was when he went in. the us justice system is terrible
That's why I never get into fights. I don't think that I am strong but I would still be afraid of accidentaly killing someone by hitting him in the wrong place.
the violent football players are always the least fun to play with and watch. violent non-sporting aggression really needs to get taken out of sport asap
Punching someone for giving you a yellow card is a cunt move.
Hope he gets life.
yeah being locked up till he's super old with a bunch of murderers, rapists and fusions of the two will definitely scare him straight gj

i like to call boxing "gloved deathmatch"

I bet you he will get manslaughter and he'll do about 10 years.
Jeez, people, you're all acting as if he beat the man to death with his bare hands in some kind of homicidal rage. He didn't. He punched him one time in the face and the man slipped into a coma and died a week later. I've punched a few faces in my day, and most of you probably have too, and never once when doing so did I even think something such as this was possible. Don't be so quick to label the poor kid as some sort of malicious murderer due to some terrible accident. I'm sure the kid isn't sitting in jail maniacally twisting his pencil mustache and laughing that he killed the poor man, he's probably confused and terrified and I'd warrant sad about the entire situation. The kid obviously needs to make up for this and definitely deserves the punishment that will likely be given, but all of this one-sided compassion for the man who died and none for the kid who accidentally killed him is a bit extreme.
You'd be amazed how vulnerable an unprotected face is. He decided to throw a punch at someone, and he'll need to take complete responsibility for that. His age and intent aren't going to change that.

As a fellow facepuncher puncher of faces, I can say you're an idiot. I've punched faces in boxing, horseplay, and defence, but not because im a stupid shit who fucked up and cant handle putting it on my own shoulders. this should be charged as nothing less than murder. it was his fault, he punched the ref with intent to hurt him, and that he did.
[editline]5th May 2013[/editline]
If the kid had been myself, I would be a murderer and due to be punished to the full extent of the law. Its one thing if you're being attacked and you hit someone in self defense and they die, then thats a big ol question mark. This was unprovoked and obviously one of the kids first reactions to solve conflict in these situations.
How about don't punch people in the first place because it's dumb and can kill, as this case readily proves.
You're a bitch that's all I have to say
Hope he gets life.
What would this solve? Prison sentences are a reaction to something, sometimes a way to keep them locked away from society or as straight up punishment.

First line of the Wikipedia article on Murder:
Murder is the unlawful killing, with malice aforethought, of another human, and generally this state of mind distinguishes murder from other forms of unlawful homicide (such as manslaughter).
It's a physical "fuck you" reaction, a punch is. That kid would not have thought "I am going to kill this man!" prior to punching him in the face, he would have been thinking "THIS GUY IS A FUCKING DICK" and the rapid extension of his arm represented rash vengeance, not an attempt to take the guy's life.
You're the fucking idiot.

Is this a new version of Bloodbowl? Bloodbowl life edition? when will it come out on steam?

He kinda did bet him to death with his bare hands though. One punch was enough, read the article. He wasn't punched in the face. The ref was sucker punched on the side of the head while he was taking notes.
Any blow to the head can be bad. Just because you've punched people in the face, doesn't make it safe. http://drbenkim.com/head-injuries-dangers.htm
He knew the consequences of his actions, he ran from the scene. If he hadn't punched him, he would still be alive reffing matches. He is directly responsible for the referees death. No compassion for him whatsoever.
Since when has everyone started supporting outcome based punishment?
But he didn't intend to cause his death.
He still intended harm

Sorry but attacking people for trivial reasons is a very primitive behavior.
Since when has everyone started supporting outcome based punishment?
Well, it is manslaughter because the man died, but manslaughter sentences can be wildly variable, depending on the circumstances. You don't punch someone in the face, once, with the intention of severely injuring them or killing them (injuring them, yes), especially if it's a spur on the moment thing.
I'd imagine he's going to get a few years at most, but theoretically manslaughter can result in a life sentence, but that's normally due to recklessness (where you commit a crime not with the intent of killing someone, but are fully aware that could be the result, and you don't care), whereas this tends more towards negligence (where the crime or act could result in death, but you both don't intend and expect that would occur, but a reasonable person would).
wow what an idiot
all soccer players will get mad at a ref atleast one time for getting a yellow card but i mean this kid is just a fuckin' idiot
"this guy gave me a yellow card i better go punch him in the face so that i can never play soccer again herp derp"
even if he didn't kill him he wouldn't have been able to play anymore i mean what a retard
he probably takes a short bus or something
Soccer? WTF is soccer? I only know football.
Soccer is short for association football, it is where you run around a field kicking a ball until it goes into a goal for 90 minutes. You also have American football where people dress in body armour and run at each other before completely changing the team and having an ad break, Rugby football where the players have 80 minutes of foreplay before going into the changing rooms and having an orgy, gaelic football where the players beat eachother up for an hour and aussie rules, which is the same as gaelic football but upside down.
I think some of you don't realize this is an informal, unofficial soccer league. This means there's no real oversight or enforcement of rules. If you're a player in this type of league and you do something really crazy, they can't really do anything about it. It's not like being kicked out of college sports, or a pro sport and you can't play anymore, you just find another bunch of guys to play with.
This means there's not much reason to expect restraint from the players. The ref's own family asked him to stop refereeing games because it was too dangerous, that gives you an idea of how those games go.
I live in the Los Angeles area, and I've seen these games. People bring food and beer, and it's sort of a big party and game thing. Imagine all the drunks at a pro baseball or pro football game, except in a place with no security guards to enforce any rules.
He'll probably be charged with manslaughter because he didn't intentionally kill him. When I went to a school assembly four years ago when I was a teenager, this mother came onstage and told us how a man hit her son in the temple. And he died fifteen minutes later and the guy who punched him got manslaughter charges and went to jail for five years.
