Maybe they believe its a scam and want to warn people about it also.
The devs using stock photos for their pictures, using assets from other games, having no work to show apart from assets bought from the unity store and generally acting immature and unprofessional gives weight to such a claim.

By rallying against what they see as potential scammers they are discouraging future scammers.

What is more likely to make similar things happen in future:
A) A successful several thousand dollar scam
B) An unsuccessful scam which gets exposed by the people you are trying to scam

Even if it does work, people will know the signs in future and hopefully not fall for another.

Perhaps. And hopefully. But the people who buy into this kind of shit don't pay attention to anything but the screenshots and empty dev promises, and giving the devs free press only gains them more people who will just throw their money at them.

I think we should have all learned a valuable lesson by now but things like this continue to make me believe that giving a shit game with shit devs any attention will only help its cause.

Just leave these things in the dark to gather dust and maybe (a big maybe) the devs will learn from their mistakes instead of getting paid to shovel shit.
