A joke like that is a little different from lying to people and getting their hopes up for something. Purposefully making a bunch of fake team personas, photoshopped promises, ripping off other peoples IP and some minimal unity stuff is nothing short of a confidence trick.

To be fair, the potato salad guy didn't promise anything except a potato salad :v:
Stuff like Areal is just a scam.
Someone a little while ago showed me their AMA on reddit. Oh goodness it was horrible.

Did anyone really expect anything different from this when it was announced a while ago? The credentials they tout are shady, they show little of their own development progress (mostly just concepts, footage and screenshots from the original STALKER games) and are asking for waaaay too little. They also make bold claims like it being on their own custom game engine when they are probably using Unity.
I just hope Kickstarter manage to shut this thing down before they run with everyone's money.
One thing apparently found from a Russian tralation of something they said, was the 50,000 was simply to attract the big money.
Forbes touched on it a while back.
Which translated to
“The game’s producer explicitly told us that the success of reaching the 50,000 mark is meant entirely to show off in front of investors. Factually, that money is needed only to attract the “real” big cash, because the development of this game of such a game would cost much more than a million dollars.”
That still sounds fishy since it's just to "show off"? Really? There's probably something lost in translation but them raising $50k wouldn't guarantee investment. This excuse is also reminiscent of the Takedown: Red Sabre Kickstarter where they said something similar but that turned out to be a barely competent tactical shooter let alone the second coming of Rainbow Six.
Can anyone bring me up to speed on the situation of AREAL? I don't think I paid much attention to it in the earlier days.

1) They put together some hastily-edited engine shots and STALKER assets with a healthy dose of bullshit to make STALKER fans believe that they had some kind of successor going.
2) A lot of fans believed in this bullshit and funded 'em on Kickstarter.
3) More concerned fans called 'em out on their bullshit.
4) Areal "devs" went bat fuck crazy and did an Amy's baking company by claiming the Chewbacca defense against "patently false" accusations that they were just cheats who wanted money for a project that had no real substance behind it.
5) They began doxxing anybody posting evidence to the contrary.
6) "Vladimir Putin" sent them a letter of support.
That's the Areal saga in a nutshell.

you left out stock photos and unity assets
3a) Some of developer photos provided on the Kickstarter page turned out to be stock photos, later on it turned out that the developers ARE the stock photos, they did a bunch of shots back in the day and sold them for money
3b) A lot of level assets in screenshots/videos suspiciously look like Unity packaged assets, they tried to defend this by saying that they're busy building a 6-platform engine

Using stuff you have legally purchased from the Asset Store is fine but they blew it by lying about making their own engine.

They also don't have the $50k needed to actually make the game but supposedly have the $250k needed to produce disc versions for consoles.

They also refuse to confirm that they have developer agreements with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, which they would need to have in order to make good on their promise to deliver a disc release (even an 'alpha' which Nintendo for sure is not going to let fly) by September 2015.

I found the full imgur link for the stolen screenshots on their Reddit AMA:

Just one example from it because I saw this on their Facebook awhile back:

Their kickstarter just got fucking cancelled.
I'm laughing my ass off right now.
Nah, he's talking about Sergei Grigorovich, this guy:

He's the founder and CEO of GSC Game World and he's known for blowing all the revenue from STALKER on three Ferrari cars and a warehouse full of Pepsi.
He also invited everyone into the studios hall just to say "stalker 2 is cancelled".
Nobody spoke for about 2 to 3 hours afterwards.
