Family, friends and members of the three armed services came together to remember Eileen Nearne MBE. Miss Nearne, 89, operated as an undercover agent called Rose during the Second World War. Documents found in Miss Nearne's Devon home after her death revealed she was sent to occupied France as a member of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the Second World War. A fluent French speaker, she was captured three times by the Germans and endured spells in concentration camps, managing to escape each time. More than 300 people, including members of Britain's three armed forces, filled Our Lady Help of Christians and St Denis Roman Catholic Church in Torquay for a requiem mass. Miss Nearne's niece, who was traced to Italy following her aunt's death and who wants to remain anonymous, addressed the service. Speaking beforehand, she said: "I would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes and support at this very sad time. "My aunt Eileen was a very private and modest person and without doubt she would be astounded by all the public and media attention. "I hope that in death, she will be remembered along with other SOE Agents with pride and gratitude for the work they did both here and behind enemy lines during the Second World War." Also attending the service were members of the Special Forces Club - a London-based organisation founded in 1946 by surviving members of the SOE - and representatives of the French military. Mourners also lined the streets of Torquay to remember Miss Nearne and around 100 gathered outside the church to listen to the 90-minute service relayed on speakers. Miss Nearne parachuted into France in 1944 she played a vital role as a wireless operator in transmitting intelligence to the Allies about V1 rocket sites, which led to the famous Operation Crossbow. Her bravery earned her the MBE and the French Croix de Guerre. Reclusive Miss Nearne died in her home on September 2 after suffering a heart attack. Initial plans for her to be given a low-key council funeral changed with the publicity about her bravery in the war.
Video
RIP. Such bravery is truly admirable.
Everyone paints spies as such backstabbers or shadowy villainous figures, when in reality they provide vital information (i.e. troop movement docs, invasion setups, etc.) They are much more valuable than we imagine. May she rest in peace.
Wow shes like someone out of a movie. My respect goes out to her

Rest in peace, Rose.
That's truly badass, rip.
You did well Rose. Rest in piece.

Damn 3 times?
Aren't funerals a waste of time? all those people could be doing something efficient, such as working. funerals take away hundreds of work hours per year. that cannot be beneficial for the good of business. a good work ethic is what is missing in these days of the younger generations, which everyone respected back in the day.
Funerals were longer "back in the day" You faggot. RIP rose. Your work saved many.
Funerals were longer "back in the day" You faggot. RIP rose. Your work saved many.
*sigh* the disrespect of these people nowadays is stunning. back in the day, I would always acknowledge my father's authority, and my mother kindly.
Your not my father or my mother I have a lot of respect for my elders and considering I have never met you you are not my elder. A funeral is a very important ceremony not only for the dead but for the grieving, people come together to appreciate the life of the deceased. It often helps with the grief of the people left behind, Allows them to say their last goodbyes and do one last thing for the person they love so....Have a bloody heart.
If you can't respect a complete stranger, how can you respect them when they are dead? respect starts from the home, and with one's parents and grandparents. one cannot learn respect without a family comprised of a man and woman, for only if one lives in the proper moral environment can one thrive to be a sensible grown up. [editline]11:28AM[/editline] p.s. it says that in the bible.
You're Religious?
I'm also very serious.
Case Closed.
You aren't? your soul could be in grave jeopardy. I pity your father didn't sufficiently introduce you to a good church early on in life. (User was banned for this post ("Trolling" - SteveUK))

What an ass. Oh by the way, your troll is definitely showing.
