Feeling trapped in an abusive relationship and so forth. Its very difficult for such people to just walk away from such a relationship, it generally takes years of councilling for someone to get over it.

I guess he had thought about doing it for a while, because of how in control he was after he killed her. In his mind it must have been really justified, which goes to show that he must have really been mentally tortured by her.

Eh it would be one thing if he killed her, but he cut her head off too. That's a bit much. If it wasn't a decapitation, he'd probably get off easy, but a gruesome, violent death isn't actually going to make a jury hang.
