14 year old exonerated of murder, 70 years after being executed

Execution was a pretty bad idea back then to be honest. Unlike now.
I'm talking about executions in modern times though. What they did to this kid is really fucked up.
but this thread only exists because being accused of a horrendous crime and having apparently solid evidence aren't enough to safely execute someone. they never will be. regardless of when or where you look at it, this is the most extreme possible example of why you can't trust a system built around capital punishment

the power will always give way to human biases and flaws. the USSR wasn't only executing murderers and rapists.
Hey I know this guy, names Josef Mengele, I think you guys should hang out because you have some likeminded ideals.
Holy Shit did you even read what I wrote

I really wouldn't compare the 1940's to today.
I just find it strange that places which still have capital punishment are usually not so lenient on euthanasia or physician assisted suicide. Think about it, you can be put to death by law, but you are not allowed to ask for your own death again by law.
Not allowing euthanasia/abortions and execution come from the same basic belief that agency over one's own body and life do not extend to certain people.

And 70 years from now, they will look back at today the same way you are looking at the forties.

I don't think so.

Are you saying that today we are at the peak of investigative technology and techniques and that there isn't anything more to learn? Because that sounds awful shortsighted.

Absolutely not, but the jump between the 40's and today is indescribable. Technology will get even more advanced without a doubt, however.

So what makes you so sure, so absolutely certain that today, our justice system is so rigorous and solid that we can kill a human being and be sure beyond a doubt that it is the right thing to do?

I wouldn't know, since I never said I am.
Poor kid had to sit on a book to fit into the restraints for the electric chair.
Shit like this just goes to show how broken the US legal system used to be towards minorities, and how barbaric execution is.
Are you aware that this happened 70 years ago and not today?
I wouldn't know, since I never said I am.
But you said that execution isn't a bad idea. Are you OK with the possibility that the wrong person was executed? Are you OK with the risk that comes with the absolute finality of a no take-backsies death sentence?
I'm not.
Why does anyone even revisit a 70 year old case ?

Used to be?

Electric chairs are a lot more adjustable and ergonomic today.
A standard premeditated murder is tame, while murdering a ton of people and storing their sexed up mutilated bodies in a freezer as a sacrifice to Satan is heinous. This is just an example, but still. Use some imagination.
Sure, you can go execute your boogiemen, just leave my tax payer dollars out of it.
