I see Disney suing Valve really soon over this some how. Fucking hell.
So is that guy legit or...?
He's the guy whos been helping H3H3 with the whole getting sued business. Also helped a few other youtubers before. Seems pretty legit.
I see Disney suing Valve really soon over this some how. Fucking hell.
Valve's not going to have any real issue. At worst, they'll be forced to take the game down.
With the recent shit Valve has been allowing to pass through i.e Watch paint dry I don't think they would condone and actually allow this without knowing the in-outs of the legal ramifications and/or the consequences. They gonna be awwight
I see Disney suing Valve really soon over this some how. Fucking hell.
Valve can claim they were just the distributor and that the owner assured them they had the rights. Idk this all seems very shady, like Disney is going to pounce anytime and I can't believe valve got on board with it

At this point in time I think the developers can get away with fair use. They're not profiting off of it what's so ever and Star wars is such a recognisable franchise that with a competent lawyer of they do get taken to court they'd be protected under fair use.
I see Disney suing Valve really soon over this some how. Fucking hell.
Why? Valve didn't make the game, and it's non profit.
With the recent shit Valve has been allowing to pass through i.e Watch paint dry
Watch Paint Dry was actually done and uploaded via steamworks dev exploits. I think I would prefer a spiritual successor to this, this is just asking for trouble. Make a good game with the essence of BF1 + 2, but keep it legal by making your own lore and you would also have a bit more freedom to play with the races and factions. I would buy the shit out of such a game.
They're not profiting off of it what's so ever and Star wars is such a recognisable franchise that with a competent lawyer of they do get taken to court they'd be protected under fair use.
That's... not how copyright works at all. You would not get away with using Disney, Harry Potter, or Star Trek content in a game by appealing to those franchises' popularity and saying you're doing it for free. In fact, fan films and the like regularly get C&D'd by large companies for infringing on their copyright. Their claim that they're protected by parody is also laughable. This isn't parody. You can't just say 'it's a parody!' to justify any completely straight adaptation of a copyrighted work. Weird Al and SNL do not create completely serious works set in the Star Wars universe and call it 'parody', they actually create parody using a very limited sample of the copyrighted material. I'm gonna have to agree with Ryan Morrison, if these guys actually have a legal team they ought to fire them immediately and get new ones. I strongly suspect that they don't and are BSing according to a very shallow understanding of copyright law.

It might have an effect on whether or not the owner decides to take it to court, but if they do then whether it's profit or non-profit is irrelevant. And the only way they could possibly get away with fair use is if they transformed the IP in some way to make it an actual parody, i.e by making all the characters/art assets spoofs of the originals, such as Puke Skystalker or Ham Yoyo.
