It lies.
A gay mexican wtf
So I wondered if Joe Wilson's shocking disrespect for the Messiah might be because he was an racist, but I dismissed it for lack of evidence. But, having learned a bit more of Joe Wilson, a picture begins to develop.
"In 2003, Wilson called it "unseemly" for the mixed-race daughter of Sen. Strom Thurmond, Essie Mae Washington-Williams, to identify the longtime South Carolina senator as her father after his death. "It's a smear on the image that (Thurmond) has as a person of high integrity who has been so loyal to the people of South Carolina," he told The State newspaper of Columbia.

In 2000, Wilson was one of seven Republicans in the South Carolina Senate to vote to continue flying the Confederate battle flag over the state house, saying, "The Southern heritage, the Confederate heritage is very honourable." The Senate voted 36-7 to take down the flag. Wilson has been a member of the organization Sons of Confederate Veterans.

On a 2002 live broadcast of the C-SPAN talk show Washington Journal, guests Wilson and Democratic congressman Bob Filner were discussing Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. When Filner said that the US "gave" Iraq "chemical and biological weapons" in the 1980s, Wilson said this idea was "made up" and commented to Filner "This hatred of America by some people is just outrageous. And you need to get over that." Wilson apologized for his remarks in statements to the press.
hahahah
The confederate flag isn't a sign of racism, yo. I own one. It signifies rebellion and defense of one's home, not slavery. Shit the Confederate Constitution upheld the Union's ban on the slave trade, at the start of the war the Union's legal stance on slavery was identical to the Confederacy's. For the vast majority of the war it was all about taxation and industrialism v. agriculture. Only halfway in when the North's morale was in the shit did it become about slavery.

Shit, did they really drop the public option? Well you're all fucked now.
I thought History wasn't your expertise?
American history is. Not really anyone else's history because I don't give a fuck, save for revolutionary France which is just as cool. The reality is there's so much more to our civil war than slavery. Slave owners were by and large a dying breed by that time, very few southerners owned slaves or really cared about the trade in general.

I'm glad the guy didn't go back on his word. He refuses to apologize to that bitch Obama for speaking his opinion. I for one applaud this guy.

[editline]11:19PM[/editline] Lincoln didn't want black people to be equal with white people, just free. I think he called the idea of equality for black people "disgusting". I'll see if I can find the quote. [editline]11:20PM[/editline] Here's something, not the quote I was looking for though:
"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not to either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also so that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause."
[editline]11:22PM[/editline] Here's a nice little thing:
Lincoln claimed that "the people of Mexico are most decidedly a race of mongrels. I understand that there is not more than one person there out of eight who is pure white."
Fun fact: the original idea for Manifest Destiny was to invade Mexico too, but then they realised that that would mean Mexicans marrying Americans. :911: [editline]11:23PM[/editline] Found it!
"i have no purpose to introduce political and social equality between the white and black races. There is a physical difference between the two, which, in my judgment, will probably forever forbid their living together upon the footing of perfect equality; and inasmuch as it becomes a necessity that there must be a difference, i ... Am in favor of the race to which i belong having the superior position."
[editline]11:23PM[/editline] What a wanker.
This is what American Debate has become. I hope you're proud of yourselves.
America is a sad country. :frown: I'm moving to England.
stuff
Yeah Lincoln was p. muche an imperialist douche
The confederate flag isn't a sign of racism, yo. I own one. It signifies rebellion and defense of one's home, not slavery.
It also signifies the racist old guard of Southern politicians
It also signifies the racist old guard of Southern politicians
That's not really how the South worked at all, bro. There were two reasons why slavery was still around before and during the civil war. A: The Federal government never emancipated anyone, and conveniently only started to care when they were fighting a losing battle on both logistical and ideological fronts. B: The few people who retained slaves even after the entire trade was banned were the wealthy elite who put money in the pockets of southern and northern politicians alike.
No no I mean nowadays
Fact of the matter is for a good chunk of the war the legal stance on slavery was identical between the North and the South, save for the fact that the industrialized North relied on children to do their shit instead of black people. [editline]07:09PM[/editline]
No no I mean nowadays
That isn't how it works nowadays either. I'm all for calling out racists but as a Southerner myself it's fairly presumptuous to imply that our politics are dominated by racial tension.
It totally is [editline]12:10AM[/editline] Old racists dudes
Not really, our conflicts are between the Religious Right and their constitutional opposition. [editline]07:12PM[/editline] Take Nashville for instance. The buckle of the USA Bible Belt and it's a surprisingly progressive town. We even have a disco church. [editline]07:12PM[/editline] Worship through the art of getting down with your bad self
How progressive? Do they support gay marriage?
You'd be surprised how much political diversity there is. Most of the people I've met are pretty left-leaning, but there are some right-leaners too. It depends entirely on who you associate with. You can't really judge an area based on their loudest assholes. For every hundred-man protest against gays there's sure as shit to be two hundred gay people who didn't RSVP. [editline]07:16PM[/editline] Neither can you judge on Red State/Blue State. For a Red State there sure as fuck is a lot of h8 for Bush.
But Nashville is a music town 8)
Country music 8(
