Oh god, I'd love a version of this that looks just like Geordi's visor
put a broad spectrum camera where each of your eyes should be, let you see low IR and high UV, hell, put a pair of small x-ray sensors too under those cameras if they exist [editline]24th January 2014[/editline]
The article doesn't say anything about head tracking or gyros, so is this basically just a wearable monitor?
kickstarter page mentions head tracking
I have a pair of Zeiss Cinemizers at work that I've been dinking with (their attempt at a headtracking attachment is failing me entirely), pretty much identical concept except you're not fucking locked into the manufacturer's definition of 'good' headphones. It does come with built in earbuds but you can disconnect them entirely. The screens are also really tiny/distant feeling so it's only really good if you intend on watching a movie.
If this is cheap enough, I'd buy in one. I don't know why, but I just really like the idea of it.
If this is cheap enough, I'd buy in one. I don't know why, but I just really like the idea of it.
seems the beta units are listed in the $500 slot on kickstart
Yes but wouldnt that be the equivalent of staring at a phone screen or a light bulb?
No, it's the same difference between prodding your eye having your eyes open during the day and staring directly at the sun, the LEDs won't be at a high intensity.
This is unbelievable..
No, it's the same difference between prodding your eye having your eyes open during the day and staring directly at the sun, the LEDs won't be at a high intensity.
Okay thanks for clearing that up for me. This is all new shit and I have no clue how it works.
Okay thanks for clearing that up for me. This is all new shit and I have no clue how it works.
long story short it's as good as any screen but dark colors/black isn't backlit like a normal monitor so that produces a more life-like effect and reduces strain. It isn't shining a flashlight in your face and won't be much of a bother
i thought the product itself broke within 4 hours of use and then i reread the title :v:
There's a huge problem if it's applied to VR and AR, tracking for one. The rift for AR will be better for RC fpv compared to this because of it's field of view. It's really niche group, a person who walks around with headphones, sits on transit for long periods for time, doesn't get sick if they put on the rift dev kit, and can afford it.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but isn't that bad for your eyes?
Provided the light intensity produced by the LEDs is not too bright, then it's as bad as being able to see.
Wait this is actually a thing? I thought someone just wore their headphones over their eyes.
Sounds like a good idea, but shouldn't it have an arch over the head like headphones? Or is the weight of the display supported by one's nosebridge?
gimmick
yeah man radio is a gimmick we already have telegraph lines and color tv is a gimmick why do we need color when we already have perfectly fine 3 inch black and white displays? And what the fuck is this new gimmicky internet thing?
Built in headphones... Ugh. Any audiophiles or people who care about sound quality will not be pleased about that.
Built in headphones... Ugh. Any audiophiles or people who care about sound quality will not be pleased about that.
Unless they're good headphones
And soon Apple will sue them and take all the money because they used the word retina.
or because they use the color white.
there's just something that scares me about the sentence "projecting straight to your retina"
Looks like a pair of beats being worn wrong.
I'll only buy this if they release a version in the form of Geordi's visor.
Finally, I can live in an era where you can properly play a .hack game. Honestly though, this feels like it would have a very limited consumer market.
Sounds like a good idea, but shouldn't it have an arch over the head like headphones? Or is the weight of the display supported by one's nosebridge?
If you watch the video there is one. It doesn't seem to show in the renderings though. EDIT: ok it looks like the CES version didn't have anything to support it, but the one in their video did. I'm not sure what their plans are.
there's just something that scares me about the sentence "projecting straight to your retina"
people really fucking don't get the buzzword and will explain it in a way that's just worse. It's not a projector laserbeaming fullbrightness images into your face, it's still a screen that you look at, just with a different way to display the pixels
Unless they're good headphones
No. They're advertising it as "high quality" headphones but that says fuck-all to anyone who knows what they're listening for. There's no catch-all solution for situation and preference, and if there was it definitely wouldn't be so cheap as to be a small portion of a $500 HMD
