I really don't see anything wrong with using a teleprompter. Some people just have a hard time remembering every little detail of what they need to say.
Before the teleprompter, most speech givers stood in front of a podium with a physical copy of the speech sitting right in front of them. A teleprompter is no different than that, except now the speech giver doesn't need to be confined to a podium and can walk around.

He can only move so far away before it becomes illegible.

People say Romney switches stances and changes sides a lot, but I disagree entirely. The man is ramrod straight. He will say whatever it takes to get into a position of power 100% of the time with unflinching accuracy.

Oh man. This is going to fuck up his campaign so much.
Rick Santorum's response:
Gotta hand it to him, he's a great speaker. Do you know who else was a great bigoted speaker? Hitler.

I don't think this gaffe will end up doing as much damage as it could have done earlier in the race. Statistically Romney has this in the bag. So unless Ron Paul's delegate strategy works or Romney is found with a dead gay underage hooker in his bed Newt/Paul/Santorum's chances are slipping away very fast.
He is the front runner that all the Republicans hate. At this point he is limping towards the finish line with the other three guys holding onto his arms and legs. And Obama is siting at the finish line with a bazooka.

And Obama is siting at the finish line with a bazooka.
If all Republicans hated him he wouldn't be winning any primaries. Appealing to conservatives is only important during the primaries, because conservatives would rather have Romney than Obama. He can only move so far away before it becomes illegible.
That only matters when the person giving the speech reads the teleprompter line for line, which very few do. If I am giving a presentation or speech I can personally recite a paragraph or more just from the first sentence. If the speech giver times his movements right he only needs to read from the teleprompter a little bit to keep themself on track and remind themself of what they are talking about.
I exaggerated. They do not hate him, but they are not excited about him. They vote for him because he is the best next to the 3 raving lunatics running against him.
A moderate, a liberal, and a conservative all walk into a bar. The bartender looks up and says "What can I get for you, Mr. Romney?"
