I googled "all UN ambassadors" and found this site

Reading the articles that accompany my search it seems that's why people were mad. They picked a fake woman to be an ambassador instead of a real person

Ohh.
What exactly is the criteria of Goodwill or Honorary ambassadors, its a little confusing. I previously read about Goodwill being more of a celebrity thing and Honorary being a fictional thing.

Still, theres been a precedent for fictional characters to be ambassadors and both Lynda Carter and Gal Gadot were at the UN to represent Wonder Woman.
I'm unsure but only 2 on their full list of honorary/goodwill are honorary (Laura Bush and Ms and Mr Beate et Serge Klarsfeld) so it seems honorary is less likely to be given
Though a lot don't say honorary or goodwill
Aaron, next time when you decide to tell others to read the article in big, bold text, make sure you do the same damn thing.
Half the thread is you yelling at people that all the honorary ambassadors are fictional characters when a fucking google search proves you wrong. Jesus Christ.
Because she was an HONORARY AMBASSADOR, WHICH FICTIONAL CHARACTERS ARE MADE INTO ALL THE TIME.
Read the article.
How the fuck that invalidates the argument that its stupid, to say the least?
[editline]27th December 2016[/editline]
That's silly.
If she has "impossible proportions" that's probably more attributed to a poor comic artist than what she would actually look like lol
But anyway this whole thing is dumb it's all dumb
The thing about impossible proportions is that some women do not like that fictional superheroes (hell, any other fictional character that does feats of strength or athleticism) being overly slim. Which is retarded.
Regardless of how one feels about a comic book character being made an ambassador, I think it's also important to remember that people wanted her gone primarily because she's an attractive "big-breasted white woman" (paraphrased from the UN petition). Which, IMO, is pretty laughable outrage.
If they want a front woman to function as a role model, they ought to be pick an actual woman. I like Wonder Woman, but at the end of the day, she's just fictional.
yea, like zoee quinn or anita sarkeesian.
-snip-
So you're just making an excuse for not reading the article then?
Only because people like to complain and not do the research about the UN and fictional ambassadors.
Or not read the article.
i like how you keep shitting out "read the article" like it makes their points any less valid of the whole thing being absolutely dumb
yea, like zoee quinn or anita sarkeesian.
why do you make posts like this.
How is Wonder Woman even a controversial choice.
Because the character's creation and history has a lot of stupid shit that would today be burned at the stake.
While those things are past and for the most part not utilized anymore, she is still a very poorly written in a lot of regards and she's hard to take seriously as a "representative" of anything because she's dressed in a swimsuit and solves problems by punching the shit out of them.
solves problems by punching the shit out of them.
For much of the character's history WW has been more inclined towards kindness and diplomacy to solve problems, often resorting to violence only as a last resort. She's continued to show these tendencies even in her most recent, more violent incarnations.
she is still a very poorly written in a lot of regards
Examples? Because so far it's not really sounding like you've ever picked up and read a WW comic.
she's hard to take seriously as a "representative" of anything because she's dressed in a swimsuit
So basically she's too sexy to embody ideals of equality and female empowerment?
why do you make posts like this.
To be fair, didn't those wankers actually speak at the U.N?

Her entire character design and origin story is based on Greco-Roman history and lore. She is a warrior, and her costume design is modeled after period armor pieces, especially gladiatorial armor.

Her costume design being fairly revealing isn't just a choice to show skin. The Amazons in DC have a Greco-Roman culture. Their armor and weapon design reflects that.
[editline]26th December 2016[/editline]
They've put her in straight up Myrmidon armor before.

Modern Wonder Woman even went through a complete costume redesign, focusing on a more heavily armored appearance.

Criticizing Wonder Woman's costume as being too revealing is unfounded imo. Despite the fact that her creator was a pretty infamous fetishist who created Wonder Woman primarily as an excuse to draw women in bondage, in the decades since her origin she has been developed into a pretty badass character, and perhaps one of the least objectified women in comic book history. Her armor might be revealing, but her character is anything but an oversexed damsel in distress. Female empowerment is one of her central themes. As potentially meaningless as the UN's honorary ambassador nomination might actually be, if you wanted a good symbol of diplomacy, inclusion, and female empowerment, you'd be hard pressed to find a better fictional character than Wonder Woman.
“Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent ‘warrior’ woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character’s current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit with an American flag motif and knee high boots –the epitome of a “pin-up” girl.”
This really just goes to show how uninformed they are. They got it completely backwards lol. The original creator was a deviant polygamist with a fetish for bondage and the sexual domination of women. He created Wonder Woman as a pin-up damsel in distress who frequently found herself chained up and vulnerable. It was over the following decades, and in different hands, that she eventually developed into the "strong and independent warrior woman" representing female empowerment that she actually is today.
This was a pretty shitty movie, thanks largely to poor writing and horrible voice acting (especially Wonder Woman's), but it's pretty representative of what kind of character modern Wonder Woman actually is and addresses this exact topic.
Yes, IIRC.
Excuse me let me highlight it for you.
Read.
The article.
Or even just the OP because it was sitting right there.
Okay so they use fictional characters as ambassadors.
Still doesn't defeat TheLurker123's original point that maybe they shouldn't use fictional characters. I think his ban is silly. If the article explained why they use fictional characters I would understand. But it doesn't, it doesn't even say they use strictly fictional characters. Just that fictional characters have been temporarily used in the past.
Next honorary ambassador should go to Makise Kurisu
I'm just saying.

Should have been Ulfric Stormcloak
